One definition of Agnostic ( which means quite literally 'without knowledge') asserts that knowledge of god is in principle impossible. Taken this way, Agnosticism is even stronger a position than Atheism.
I do not have to make the claim "there is definitively no god" in order to be an atheist. Such a claim is not strictly scientific.

Many of these religions have the concept of some kind of hell, many not. If you include all of the extinct religions of the past, the number of gods is staggering. I would be playing an impossible game, one that I couldn't possibly win. Religion gives something for people to believe in, something I already have.

In the former USSR1917-92 atheism/evolution was taught daycare-university. The Bible was banned&it was illegal to teach it to kids. Within months of the fall of the USSR in 92 the Bible&Creationism was reintroduced in Russian schools.The main one behind it was Olga Lutsenko&she was an atheist then. Death threats made her leave in 96&she lives in Canada&is a Christian now.BTWshe is on youtube&I support her work financially. It's amazing to me how fast Christianity came back to Russia&USSR in 92.

@jerseytarzan2 It depends on your definition. One definition of 'atheist' ( I think the most common one) is one who simply doesn't believe in any god or gods. One definition of Agnostic ( which means quite literally 'without knowledge') asserts that knowledge of god is in principle impossible. Taken this way, Agnosticism is even stronger a position than Atheism.
I do not have to make the claim "there is definitively no god" in order to be an atheist. Such a claim is not strictly scientific.

Believing that there is something supernatural who would take care of human being is at best wishful thinking. Look at the major epidemics in the history. Billions of people died, many of them are innocent children, and many of them are religious people. Where is that "god" if it is all that loving and powerful? It is science that lead us out of those dark days. I don't want to go back again.

Many of these religions have the concept of some kind of hell, many not. If you include all of the extinct religions of the past, the number of gods is staggering. I would be playing an impossible game, one that I couldn't possibly win. Religion gives something for people to believe in, something I already have.
