WARNING! I have a Sharpmaker, and it damaged one of my knives! I believe that because of my using a little too much pressure on the pointed edge of the rod, micro chips in my blade were created. When I would test the sharpness with paper, it wouldn't cut smoothly, and I noticed the chips. Others online have noticed the same thing. Now, I only use the flat area of the rods, and it works fine. Awesome video, btw! Thanks for posting.
Nice review. Could it also be that not only is your gerber knife old, but being 20 years old it likely has an inferior blade steel compared to the ones used presently? That, along with it being dull, could have hampered its ability to take a really sharp edge quickly/easily. Just a thought
Solid review! One suggestion is to follow Spyderco's recommendation to use the top of the case and click it into place over the other side of the sharpener. This will get your hand a bit further away from the knife and give you a better grip on holding it.
Really good review WTF. Showing that you had to use the diamond stones to bring back your Gerber helps put it all in perspective...because who amongst us knife lovers doesn't have at least one old blade that needs more than just being toned?
just got my first sharpmaker yesterday and love it, slapped a hair shaving edge on my knife in just a few minutes. really easy and effective. good review and I can't wait to try other knives on mine.
I now do over 100 strokes per step on my sharpmaker. Lighter pressure and fast strokes. I also have the ultra fine stones and finish up on a strop. I like the results i get but i'm thinking of upgrading to an edgepro.
I suggest you try to use VERY little pressure when sharpening, instead of firm force and see the difference in the results, in my experience it's a lot better. Great video BTW...
@outdoorstylelife - I tend to use a lot less pressure when I use the ceramic stones, but I'll try a lighter touch on the darker stones and see how that works. Thanks much.
Very good point on it being a Sharp Maintainer. I actually use Shapton Ceramic Whetstones to bring a dull blade back to life and keep it sharp with the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Once you have a great edge there is nothing simpler to keep it razor sharp. I think everyone that owns a knife should have a Sharpmaker. I actually recommend taking your knifes to a professional sharpener if they are dull as this is a very skilled process to put the right edge on it, you you can maintain it for years to come.
@LiferNRA - I agree 100% that this is something everyone should own and use. It's too cheap and useful not to. Excellent point about using a professional knife sharpener, or sending your knife back to the factory for sharpening.
Currently I have a older spyderco medium/fine grit double sided stone that I have been using for years, it does take some practice and skill though to keep that angle consistent. It has worked very well for me, came in a nice leather pouch also.
I am still deciding if I want one or not, I have never used one before, but I dont really need it. It does sharpen serrations correct? That would be an advantage over mine.
You are very helpful subscribed :)

@47trea - it does indeed do serrations! I've not tried, but the included DVD talks about this. I think for $40.00 or so, you can't really go wrong.
