Of all the coin-op video games, Tempest was my absolute all-time favorite. Simple yet challenging.

Fantastic! Tempest is the only arcade game I was any good at as a teenager. There used to be a little arcade above the CB radio shop in my home town, it had Defender, Battlezone, Gorf and Tempest. Happy days!

Is that a proper vector monitor inside of that machine or was there a raster monitor installed (with a converter ?)

I sure hope not, but the picture is so steady on this video, usually the vector games give a flickering picture on videos (at least with my camera).

By the way Jeff if you read this, why not write Tempest II for the original arcade hardware ? Would be a blast ! :D

The question is why didn't Jeff have one of these in the first place? I mean I realise he dresses like a mongolian yak-herder, but surely he has a couple of grand stuffed in an armchair somewhere?

Because they're damn hard to find. In fact, it seems that this one was assembled from several different sources - you can hear Jeff mention in the video that "he heard about Tempest cocktails coming in, and he spoke to Archer" (that's Archer MacLean, the International Karate guy, who also restores arcade machines), so maybe the board in it is from a cocktail and it's a restored cabinet?

Oh, on top of that - apparantly, Jeff _did_ once before have a Tempest cab but had to get rid of it for some reason..

I would love to own this arcade machine as well.I used to play it a lot in the taxi cab waiting room in my town.Spent loads of coins on it.I was truly hooked.Battlezone was another fav of mine!

I remember the first moment i clapped eyes on my very first tempest, my fragile cerebral cortex gibbered liked as if a neural pathway forever ingrained just opened up...it also defined gaming cool for me... something sexily sterile about tempest... the sounds.. hmmm
