I was at a baseball game in Basehor, Kansas, and they had to cancel my game because of weather, and we stopped right off of K-7 and I-70 and saw the tornado i was 11 at the time, it was pretty cool. Since then i love severe weather!
This is the one! My first (and hopefully last) sighting of a tornado. I live a few miles southwest of the Speedway in Linwood Kansas and at the time I saw it, it was small and not clearly visible even though I was only about a mile away from it. By the time it crossed my field of view, it grew in size and strength, getting darker and darker as it picked up debris and the roar from it sounded exactly like they say - a freight train! Something I will never forget.
if that's the one that hit Riverside, it hit my house! i didn't get to see it, other than on dopplar, but my home was in the direct path of the one that hit between Parkville and Riverside, Mo.
OMG! I do remember watching tons of tornadoes on the news that night. Yeah, i think 80 tornadoes did touched down that night. But I was only, 11 years old at the time and didn't know much about tornadoes.
I was at the speedway watching my friend do the richard petty driving experience and after they were done we ate at a Crackel Barrel nearby when we heard the sirens go off. It seriously kinda came out of nowhere. So I started taking pictures and got them to the newspaper a few hours after it hit.
I remember this all too well, yet, it didn't hit out here in Independence, seemed to just go around us (closest it got was the Missouri River on the northside).
It was a nice, warm, sunny day, mostly. The supercells were almost all tornadic at one point or another that day. KS and MO had a huge number of tornados that day. I lived in liberty at the time. I believe that tornado was on the ground for 2 hours.
I was at my mother's apartment in Edwardsville (directly south of the Kansas Speedway) that day. The skies had this eerie green color to the clouds. I saw some rotation in the clouds, but the tornadoes were to the north of us. Oddly, our sirens weren't sounding and we didn't have to evacuate.
Oddly if I remember right, the weather really wasn't bad that day, as I was leaving my apt which was in the westside near downtown KCMO, on my way to a BBQ in union hill and though the sky was still a very strange color, it was clearing up and partly sunny by the time I arrived. I was actually unaware of the situation happening to the west & north until I arrived at the BBQ and everyone was watching the news & all freaked out because of the tornado.
I remember May 4th. I was at Barrywoods AMC 24 theater, over by Thorobred Ford. We came up on it like 2-3 minutes after it destroyed Carrige Hills. It had already dissapated.
Was living in KC at the time and remember being out driving on I70 when they mentioned it on the radio. Was trying to remember--was this the same nado that destroyed the Toyota dealership in North Kansas City (where I bought my first Toyota in '98)? Awesome footage.
i just remember getting ready to go out to eat and we turned on the news and it said any body the the area of the woodlands go to your basements i lived on 85th St. it took the siding off our house anad it took or fence that was a day from hell
we were going home from my grandmas house and we saw it it was sooooooooooo scary my dad was scared to we got in a dict it was ritht over us it missed r car i had to go to the hospital there was a small boared in my arm
O my i remember that...We were at the zoo for a school field trip and i remember going home on the bus and right above the city the sky was a dark greenish color...man....
yeah it was a few years before that one and we were on our way home from jeff city for a school field trip and it formed literally a mile or 2 from where we were so we had to stay in some randm rec center in sedalia
I to remeber this day, I was on the school bus in Sedalia and we saw a tornado forming in this big field, the bus driver dropped us off and said get home fast and into the basement, well seing as I love tornadoes for there beauty I stood out there and watched with a friend. The tornado started to form above me literally and it felt as though I was about to get lifted off the ground, so I bolted after that one lol.
well if it is true that it was a security camera then it will not have the sound, although I so wish there was sound because it would be really dramatic
their was a couple of deaths but they were indirectly related to the tornado. The video is from a security camera at the woodland race track in kansas city kansas
I was a Sr in highschool living in south KC. My friends and I went tornado hunting in my Jeep.. we went the wrong way. Our parents were PISSED.
