  • he cool

  • mothman...

  • Actually neither is the bases for the other. Foreign cultures are their bases.

Why must so many people try to make out anything baring even the most remote resemblance to something else as a copy?

The concepts are very simple and neither Pokemon nor Shin Megami Tensei were the first to use them.

At least this isn't as bad as when I see people trying to say one game copied the other because they are in the same genre... cuz Halo was obviously the first FPS ever <_ <... Seriously people. Stop

  • love this boss music

  • Question for the video poster - has this game been released in the USA? Also, I saw other versions of Megami Tensei released in the states - they had the names all butchered, they took God out of the English versions..

  • @KevinTheDuke22 Nope, this game hasn't been released in English.

Which games are you talking about, where they removed God? I don't remember any like that, but he has been making fewer appearances.

  • *making a stupid comment*

THAT'S WHY YOU WON! NO ONE BEATS SON GOKU FROM DRAGON BALL

    KAMEHAMEHA ON THEM!

  • What the hell is wrong with modern RPGs that they can't have awesome spell and ability graphics like these?

  • The team of Monkey, Bunny, Horsey, and Moth just steamrolled you, Demiurgos. What do you have to say in your defense?

  • That the bunny has a ridiculously powerful buff spell and they're being backed up by some pretty powerful humans?

  • @shinreiyhvh Ok, stat-boosting bunnies are tough to get a handle on.

  • @rubino83 in his defense it's the Monkey King, the Hare of Inaba and Odin's warhorse

  • The human guy who Demiurge is posing as looks like one of those political villains you'd see in such manga like 20th Century Boys. :P

  • Is there a translated version of this game available? Rom wise? I'd like to give it a shot, i like the Megaten series but was never able to play this one.

  • Gosh the US needs to try to make games other countries would buy from us for a change Japan is getting a good amount of US dollars because their games are so popular. We import almost everything.

  • @masterzakk hehe.

  • @masterzakk Yup, your so wrong that in your comment that you apparently shove both your feet on ya mouth.

  • What's going on before the fight?

  • IT IS NOW BAHAHAHAHAHA

But seriously. Regardless of what most people try to say, MegaTen was the basis for Pokemon. Hell, you could make a (terrible, and I'd probably be sad if you did) case for Digimon copying MegaTen, and Pokemon copying Digimon. It's just silly. Either way, if MegaTen wasn't popular in the US, then Atlus wouldn't publish it here. They're a niche developer; they can't afford to waste money like that, after all.

  • @dgarrat Besides, they could NEVER get away with officially localizing the early MegaTen games over here. I mean the last boss of #2 is YHVH! As in THE Big Guy Upstairs. The Right would hit the roof!

  • @dgarrat Pokemon copying Digimon?

Uhhh, you know Pokemon came out in 1996 and was in planning since before 1994, and Digimon didn't come out until 1997 as a digital pet ala Tamagotchi.

  • Actually, The first two SMT games were on the NES and SNES. And Atlus released SMT: Devil Survivor on DS, they're also releasing SMT: Strange Journey on DS as well. And the series is really popular. Seriously!

  • tis game dun hv english version ??

  • I think MegaTen is popular in Japan, it's certainly more popular than in the US, before the Persona series. One of the articles I read put it just behind Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest as a series.

Also, even obscure games could be inspiration for designers, because they would tend to research not only what is popular, but also what might be unpopular due to mismanagement, yet shows potential.

  • It's always been Dragon Quest > Final Fantasy > SMT, in Japan. I'm pretty sure when DQ7 came out so many people took the day off work to buy and play it there was a small downturn in their economy, and they made the release of DQ8 a holiday. Look it up.

  • Actually, its currently DQ > FF> Tales of.. Series, SMT hasn't been THAT popular since aroud 1997.

  • Show me one piece of evidence of that, you can't even spell the word "around". Namcot, (now Namco) sold the DDS name to Atlus when it was still on the NES thinking it was not going to be worth it, now you tell me that Persona 3 hasn't made as much of an impact as TOV for example. You have no idea how many physical manifestations there are of Jack Frosts in that country.

  • i might like the story, i'd hate the graphics. smt rules.

  • Sorta, but not really, but the games are great!

  • pokemon copied megaten, apparently... for sure, megaten series came out first.

  • @bajan13k pokemon sucks really bad, nothing can ever beat megaten

  • @TheDeatharcana Exactly! :D

  • @bajan13k Megaten is Pokemon for adults hehe.....or Pokemon is Megaten for kids....lol I realized this a few months ago.

  • @RocmanRaz It's obvious Pokemon for the most part ripped off this magnificent series and made a bastardised version where the main hero is a child that hides behind his monsters to fight instead of fighting alongside them like in Megami Tensei. Pokemon has stolen the spotlight this series should be in because Megami Tensei merely isn't as heard of in the other countries outside Japan.

  • @KevinTheDuke22 Exactly! Megami Tensei DESERVES the popularity that Pokemon has!

  • @MysticArksRevenge actually MegaTen is worthy of a popularity even bigger than pokemon's popularity!

  • @Baudez Yes! I agree with you wholeheartedly! MegaTen DESERVES to be more popular and bigger than Pokemon!

  • @MysticArksRevenge But the series can't be pounded into the ground like Pokemon. inb4 RAAAAEG and fanboi haters.

  • @Seer241 Why? Megaten deserves to be popular! I am sick and tired of Nintendo always getting all of the glory with their franchises! Let some other company get the glory for a change!

  • @MysticArksRevenge uh, don't forget that atlus is a niche developer. you're lucky you get shit. translating costs a lot of money, and for a piddly small amount of money compared to FF and zelda. why does Nintendo get all the credit for their franchises? because theirs is the greatest ever made. the work. they're FUN. they're games. a game is supposed to be entertaining, and nintendo makes the best entertainment. simple formula.

  • @Chaoktarukto

I am a Nintento fan and I know your logic is horribly flawed. Popularity =/= quality. That is a logical fallacy, you know.

  • @Kageryushin excellent point. there are many good developers ignored.@MysticArksRevenge but also, megaten itself was a problem in the days when people in america cared about mortal kombat. i mean, the fact that you could go out against GOD whilst summoming demons like beelzebub isn't exactly a good thing amongst the suburban culture. the reason pokemon became popular was because it was accessible, not like megaten with its penis demons, blasphemy, and (in the first smt) interface no-nos.

  • @bajan13k Exactly, Pokemon is a sack of shit after you play Megami Tensei

  • @KevinTheDuke22 Exactly.

  • @bajan13k And therefore, SHOULD'VE CAME OUT IN AMERICA FIRST.

  • But Dragon Quest V came even out even earlier...

  • @Hardman5509 Check again. Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei for the Famicom was released in 1987. About 5 years before Dragon Quest V.

  • @bajan13k They all copied Ultraseven from the 60's

  • @catine27 yeah, pokemon copied a lot of ideas from the megaten games. megaten was first, though.

  • デミウルゴスはかなり苦戦したな・・・デスリングが一番怖かった 。

  • Mothman's scarier than that...

  • Where was this boss? was it in the university?

  • I'm pretty sure it wasn't. Kitayama University has a different BGM, doesn't it?

  • From the footage ive seen dungeons have different songs when you are in the "otherworld". Like china town has the "other world dungeon 4" song when there are bad guys around. But normaly it has the china town BGM

  • That's correct, actually. But I don't think this is the track that plays there in any event.

  • hmm :s well than where is this place? I wish people would translate this game :(

  • @gravijiga It's the government office.

  • This game is my favorite one in the Devil Summoner series because it is Atlus's first game in the Shin Megami Tensei series to be released in the Playstation in 1995.
