Despite not knowing the technicalities behind this particular demonstration, I am impressed by how much information this provides about the flow and heat transfer of two fluids unleashed from different heat resivors :)
The credits in the movie provide that the CFD code used was Saturne and the thermal code was Syrthes. EnSight from CEI was used to do the data visualization.

That vortex sheddingis due to a combination of convection and the direction/velocity that those two fluids hit each other at that junction.
