+1 on weihenstephaner being a lager, not pils. not to mention it gets a great rating on beer advocate, its a great beer. also watched some of your other vids on you guys slammin on dogfish heads ipa's. wtf? not sure i like your opinions on beer guys....
wow that's unusual, I would have thought the Weihenstephaner would have made a very good pils. I've had their Heffeweizen and it's absolutely fantastic...I'll have to see for myself.
You're judging Weihenstephan Original as a Pils, but it's not. It's their "Lager Beer," just a simple light lager. Weihenstephan does make an actual Pils, which I had at the Weihenstephan brewery in Freising, Bavaria, and it was very very good. That's like saying Chimay Red is bad IPA. Rate it for what it really is guys! Regardless, I'm a long time brewer, so hit me up for beer talk anytime.
Paulaner for pilsner is like USA for mexican food, come on... you could have tried the Bitbutger, Becks, Krombacher, Berliner Pilsner and many many others... not the wors pils from Germany....
We have both tried it. I (Ryan) believe the fresher you can get it the better. Don't bother if its more than 6 months old. Otherwise a very drinkable pilsner.
I (Andrew, on the right) have. It is quite tasty, and I love how Trumer decided to not just import their beer, but instead to open their own brewery in Berkeley, CA. Very good stuff it is.
Funny how the beer you guys rated the lowest is in fact by far the best of the four. It's probably one of the best beers of its style. This isn't just my opinion, but the opinion of many beer drinkers. But, to each their own I suppose. Now if you said the same thing about the Weihenstephaner hefeweiss, then I would vow to never watch your videos ever again...hahah. :)
Yeah, everyone has their own opinions. While we like to think our comments are inciteful, they never work for everyone. And I agree, if we said the same thing about the weihenstephaner hefe, I would never watch/make another video like this again.
The Optimator is an excellent doppelbock. The Spaten brewery is a fine German Brewery, despite it's very large brewing capacity, since their Pilsner, Hefeweizen, and Marzen are all excellent. Also, if you liked the Optimator try out the Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock. It's another great beer of the same style.
Sorry, I was unclear, I mean they are not hoppy in the sence of California style beers, a traditional Pils, like Staropramen, is nearly incomperable to anything from Stone Breweries. But YES, they have a hop aroma and a slight hop bitter. I understand Urquell still ferments small batches in the old style, those WOULD be interesting to try!
I had thought Northern beers, like Jever, were UNcharacteristically bitter?
Paulaner is a fine beer, I was dissappointed with quite a few of the German beers I've had. The REAL problem is that since the Germans stopped paying attention to the Purity Law its hard to tell what beer is high class and which is junk...
Sorry, My point was that it isn't, strictly speaking a Law anymore, so nobody has to follow it. And it is true that some have decided to go for profit over purity. To some extent, in the States, there is a feeling that the Purity Law ended up hurting German Beers by making innovation and experimentation verboten, no? There is a small article in "Beer Advocate" magazine from about 3 months back that touches on this. And I was dissappointed, and continue to be, with many german beers...
well if you taste only the beers, that are based on profit (becks, schöferhofer, augustiner, erdinger..), its obvious, that you are dissappointed, but if you would start a trip to germany and taste the local ones, then you will be surprised, how delicious german beer can taste
Spending some time in Germany would be wonderful, and I am sure that what you say is true, I continue to try various beers from all-over Europe, and havn't given up hope yet!
For example I am very mush a fan of Pannepot right now, I've even brewed my own near-copy of it.
Just curious, It looks like you were tasting the Weihenstephaner Original. They do make an actual Pilsner which has a gold label. The Original is a very light lager which probably didn't taste like anything next to the other ones you tasted. Never the less, good video. Very informative.
Pils: Cruszowicze, Budweiser (czech)
As for German Pils: I like Jever, really bitter, drink as cold as you can during a hot summer night, just perfect!

Paulaner Salvator Double Bock and Leinenkugel Big Butt Dopplebock are two of my favorite bocks.
Just so happens I'm enjoying a steak with a Sam Adams cream stout as I'm writing this. XD

Its a Pils, its not supposed to be malty or hoppy... You should try a selection from the Pilsen region...

thats not true!!!!
only schöferhofer and becks startet to mix their beers with lemon and mentol and grapefruit
the most other brewerys hold on to that purity law
so don`t tell something, yout have no idea of, ok??
if you buy a radler, it`s a lager mixed with lemonade, if you buy a ruß, it`s a weizen mixed up with lemonade
if you buy a beck`s lemon, its crap^^
