  • Its obvious that is a Ninja who is playing the bass.

  • My dad always used to play this to me as child.

  • in the late-70s through the 80s my dad was a alcoholc & terrorized us to the point of us running out of the house. For some reason this song reminds me of those days...gone but not forgotten.

  • i'm 25 and when i was 17 i remember my family took me to The Hard Rock Cafe Resort for some concert whilst i was staying with them in Bali. And i suddenly realised WHO i was watching when they started playing this song! lol. I was like OMG! I know level 42!! and they were really really good!

  • Never seen before. Thanx for the post. Such a great listen... the bass part dosen't always correspond to the video. Nonetheless, the song of this terrific band is just amazing. Intelligent and a bit sofisticated.

  • the lead singer is also the bassist. bro - lol

  • alot of people say how good a bass player he is but little say how good he is at singing also

  • who the f**k is playing bass in this clip??? A ghost??

  • thumps up if you listen to this while you are under 20 years old!

  • @itsfunny1234 not too many. but you get thumbs ups anyway.

  • They don't make quality music these day's the way groups like Level 42 did..

  • niceee song., reminds me of...:-)

  • whats with the lip synkin

  • ditto above...xx

  • hi Aaron.

  • Love the way they cut to the guitar player over Mark's slappy bass bit coming out of the bridge...

  • j'aurais crus que c'etait plus tôt , 1983 ...

  • I mistook this for Nik Kershaw when I first heard this on the radio in the 80's. I think he sounds particularly similar on this song in the verses.

  • Did music as we know it stop at the end of the 80s?.You can look back on utube through 4 decades of superb music what have got now!!!! F--- All

  • Tesna koza 2! :))

  • This is real music really liked Level 42 and Mark King is so passionate, he can sing and play guitar puts todays so called musicians to shame!

  • im really glad i was able to pick up some of this era :) , great music!

  • this is REAL MUSIC.!!!!

  • Forget the video Mark King can play so were is he ?

Come on, if the likes of Clapton and others of such talented fingers are still doing stuff !

Why can't Mark King he he a great bass man.

  • its playbacked like all top of the pops shit. dont like it.

  • John taylor or Mark king? tough choice for best bassist there I think!

  • @lithuimraider Love Mark King....Respect John Taylor.....But I have to put Geddy Lee at the of my list. I am glad to see King get some respect.

  • i like how they are playing sax when its a sax synth :)

  • Just a brilliant band.All superb players.

  • itsfunny1234, you are exactly right. Nowadays so many (not all) artists don't even write their own music or even play musical instruments. This is REAL MUSIC.

  • schwarzenegger's playin the sax!!

  • The old music much better than that new shit.

    THIS IS REAL MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • There is no way the kids of today, when they turn our age. Will be able to look back on todays music and have the great feelings that we have when we listen to the 80`s music.

  • 1:02 hilarious

  • Comment removed

  • such a dark classic.

  • @nilpointdotcom so true.

  • amazing oldies song!

  • 80`s music is the best of them all!

  • cant wait for the fashion on the 80's to come back! haha!

  • this song was andstill afav of mine 80s and the synth wow and mark singing and the bass wowxxx

  • look Ma no cables!!! Even for the synth!!! Great song otherwise.

  • Do you reckon they're miming?! :)

  • its great how unique mark kings voice is, can tell him apart from any other artist!

  • magic

  • my primera discooooooooooooo jejejeje i was born in 1972

  • Shit hot happy memories - thanks!

  • MIKE LINDUP FUCKING YES

  • I never liked it then and even now it's no more than just average. Just look how uncool they are with their instruments strapped just below their earholes, it looks so uncomfortable to play that high up.

    Boring then and boring now.

  • @nancyroseanne Screw you you know fuck all about good music !

  • @modernmusicstinks You knob, who gave you the right to decide what I cinsider to be wank music for wankers like you. You onanistic gobshite.

  • @nancyroseanne Ah, it's all about how high up the guitar is. If you knew fuck all about guitar, you'd know that it's easier to play well with the instrument higher up. Now go and find something to watch with style over substance, which will make you feel more comfortable. Sheep.

  • @topperdoggle You are such a penis, it's not any easier strapped up that high. Wanker

  • @nancyroseanne do you get some kinda sexual buzz from insulting people on here, sweetheart?

  • @modernmusicstinks I think your memory, along with your brain is limited and very small. It was you who decided it was big and clever to start abusing me over my personal view on this dire music. You don't know me or anything about me. So fuck off and keep your worthless personal insults to your little boy self. xx

  • @nancyroseanne Actually it is. You clearly don't play guitar but don't let that stop me calling you a penis if it makes you feel better. You called the video boring, but it's not half as boring as you. Go and do something interesting instead of sitting there trying to snipe with baseless psuedo-irony.

  • @topperdoggle *you calling me

  • Their second biggest hit,i believe, based on it's highest UK chart posistion. It is their most familiar song in these parts (Aussie/NZ) though so it may have charted higher here than"Lessons in love" did.

  • funky ass bass ftw

  • well really great song for it my memories when i was young wiz all my friend getting nostalgiic listen at it

  • I agree with the top comment. Lady GaGa, she is so over rated but no one can barely speak out against her and her music it is like a crime not to like her. I see people in their 40s and 50s singing Poker Face! I'm mid 20s and cannot stand the woman! LOL! 70s and 80s BEST!!

  • @SweetSesatia i agree Sesatia! LADY GAGA?? Puh lease even her freakin name is stupid as fuck!

  • Bring back the 80s... This said from a guy born in 1988; i.e. a "product" of the 80s...

I could say bring back all kinds of other decades in addition...

  • I agree. music is all about SEX and fakery these days. Look at this song, no mention of sh*gging, and yet it is a catchy and sweet little song!

  • @MiggleMuggle - It is all about sex isn't it, "on the back seat of the car, it runs in the family...", etc

  • jo zene!!!

  • Please excuse my ignorance - and as a bass-player, it really is PIG-ignorance - but what's Mark King wearing on his right thumb? I assume it's to protect the joint from the slapping, but what exactly IS it? xD

  • @MRDRWWILLIAMS I think it's just a plaster :)

  • @MRDRWWILLIAMS

Black electrical tape. He split his thumb open badly in Level 42's early days, so has always used this (and still does) to protect it.

  • I remember the 80's, Hand jobs in the car. what a great era.

  • I hit the 80's at just the right age, I had the big hair, bright outfits.....it was the best and the music was FUN! Not like the crap now.

  • The best thing ever to come from the Isle Of Wight!

  • @craigybus1 Don't forget the garlic and the I.O.W. festivals!!!

  • Probably one the best Bass players there ever was.

    All hail Mark King.

  • @ZaPpaul ;) except Steve harris from Maiden...not to criticise Mr King. ...different class but as good. :)

  • i wish i was one of these eighties dude in the crowd ,such a good dance song ,i'd totally be grindin on some babe .reminds me a little of fishbone

  • Born in the late 80s but wish i had been growing up throughout it. Gotta love the eighties! x

  • I was practically raised on Level 42, my dad brought Running In The Family Albulm, back in 87 and would blast it out aroud the house all the time.

  • Music these days is crap, blah blah blah, oh this is real music blah blah. I miss artists like these, blah blah.

....And in ten years time people will be saying the same shit about So Solid Crew.

On another note, I do fucking love 80s music. The only real difference is the production and instrumentation. Not the actual song writing though.

  • i had 23 years with out hearing this song the only thing keeps me remember it was the sax notes and now that i hear it it makes me cry was the time when i was a child and then turn to a teenager my god i cant believe how many years, things and events past in my live =) =( thanks to the poster for make my day

  • @sxedyee You haven't heard it for that long, that is long passage of time to go without hearing song as great as this, i love this song, i was practically raised on Level 42.

  • Great song, from a great band the like of which we'll never see again - the music industry today has become too "plastic", and is clogged full of talentless wanabe's. Everything peaked musicaly during the eighties, and has gone downhill ever since.

  • My fave Level 42 song!! Loving the EMU-Emulator :)

  • "LOOKING BACK ITS SOOO BIZAAARE!" Ahh the memories...

  • Looking back it's so bizarre...hehe the 80's

  • @subadubable sorry mate, didnt see your message, before posting my own!! That's bizaare- iz right bloody next to yours!! lol

  • '80....what to say....

  • Great band :)

  • This is 900% mimed...

  • It quite amazing looking back and seeing 80s pop music that I secretly liked even though it wasn't cool, and comparing it to today's pop. No comparison, these guy's were talented musicians. Level 42 were a serious jazz/funk band in the late 70s who went on to have some commercial hits in the 80s. 'Looking back it so bizarre' cos these tunes so better now than they did at the time mostly because of the dire state of pop music today!

  • God, they really are as dull as I remember!

  • great song

  • @ idum01

Hence IMO . oh it means In My Opinion. by and large the 80s were shit

  • One of the better bands of the 80s , otherwise most were pretty gross , 90s proved better IMO

  • @unionjack7boots

one of the better bands? Tthere were many bands in the 80's which were really good. This was an argument of a faggot.

  • okey. . great song but this is a playback. . .

  • OMG!! haven't heard this for years, its FAB! makes you realise what we're missing with most of the dross we're having to hear at the moment. bloody good band.

  • I can hear a bass, but cant see one being played. Level were great enough to play live but TOTP had a miming policy i believe :(

  • This song has been with me, practically all my life, my Dad used to have The Running In The Family albulm, which he would constanly play on the record player, great memories of this wonderful song.

  • Anyone notice its harder now to find Level 42 original videos?, someone seem to have removed all of them. If that's the case, no one benefits. Anyhooo, I just love their music, wish I could get all their original videos.

  • Great memories of being 16!!!

Watched this TOTP, watched it every week, WITHOUT FAIL!!

Such a polished, talented group, JUST LOVED THEM!!

Loved to watch Mark flick that bass!!!!

  • awsome, 2 d list.....

  • no one flicks that bass like mr king..remember watchin it.....luv it ........great post.......

  • i love this song

  • Back when pop bands were talented musicians, Level 42 had one of the greatest bass players in the world!

  • What is beezaar? ; )

  • lol

  • very 80s not a great decade for music though

  • gotta love mark king........wonder wot he looks like now???

  • @cougarant well, head over to level42.com and you can find out :)

  • This is maybe mainstream, but played fantastic, fantastic musicans!Lady gaga, shakira, beyonce?I don´t know where the f*** music went nowadays when these 3 women are the most popular artists on planet??!Give me a break!

  • @1973833 I'll go along with that ...

  • Mathematically it is 100% 80's.

    I love it!

  • POP music at its very best !

  • Level 42 1987 That was one of my first CD's I ever bought, and this song was 7 minutes like Lessons in Love, Something about you (all long versions....7/8 minutes) but this is fantastic music! Join the Euro Club, dear England.....I should say !

  • @ludo281160 Yeah remember the 7 minute version, still got it at home somewhere and feel in the mood to give it blast now.

  • lip sinkers!

  • To be honest mate...sat the time all bands performing on Top of the Pops were mimed. The BBC was concerned about duff performances, swearing ect...so no band ever played live on TotP in the 80's. Most memerable performance regarding this was Iron Maidens appearance for the song Running Free. They just kept swapping instruments, totally giving the game away for those too young or ignorant to realise that the songs were all lip synced. But, no, its not a fault of L42, it was the norm on TotP.

  • i think music is more stereotyped nowadays, guitars for metal and rock, instrument samples for pop, gibberish for electronica. Seperating instruments is not the answer!

  • @SpawnSpectre

Don´t forget the watery/H2O blubbering for Hip Hop Tracks.

  • I've always liked their basslines... great sound !

  • I really love this song, not to mention how appropriate it is. It reminds me of my dad somehow. 'things that we are born to be, it runs in the family, all the things that we are. great song!

  • @autumn9462 This is SUCH a dad song. Not just because it's about a father, but because this is exactly the kind of stuff my own dad listens to!

  • Oh my god, does this bring back memories!!!! Was in Greece on holiday an really, really fell for an amazing lass, could not even say a word as I was married, years later, not with the two timing bitch, but can still listen to the music and dream "what if I had spoken, yeah, I know, how sad is that!! Lol

  • @TiggersRace Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

  • WHY THE F*** is this on my recomended for you? It said it was there because i watche a song of Opeth

  • they are miming as in the 80's all bands had to on top of the pops which this show is

  • Could watch Phil Gould batter the kit all day. What an astounding and versatile player.Always loved that yellow kit he had too.

  • big fan of LEVEL 42!

  • It isn't lip 'singing', and yes...he is!

  • is it me or does it look like he's totally lip singing?

  • @mustloveemo He is, but they all did on TOTP back in the day. My brother went to see them live in concert and said they were really good!

  • Isn't this the starchild bass you own Morgan?

  • 80s' music rocks!

  • "in the backseat of the car, with Joseph and Emily"....classic. thanks for posting

  • Mark Lindup giving the camera everything, love it!!!

  • Great band great song great era.

  • This is Top of the Pops..hence not live

Greatest band in my late teens... live sound exactly the same if not better

  • even if it makes me look like an old bat, i have to say that everything was better in the olden days!

  • Great JD bass with a Kahler on it !!. Mark needs a MkII Status with one of those!!

  • Mir läufts gerade eiskalt den Rücken runter.. (nicht negative gemeint, sondern weil richtig gute Musik nicht so ein dreck von heute!!!)

  • Not one of their best tracks IMO. I can understand the Gould bros misgivings re the band's direction at this time. I much preferred their earlier stuff - first 3 albums; sci-fi imagery included.

  • @pierstheoneandonly Im sorry this in my opinion was their best track.

  • fucking play back

  • So 8o's..gotta love it!

  • im a 90's child but gotta love the music from the 80's 70's and 60's : 3

  • I agree with Bjoernbaks. The so-called "mainstream" had real class in the 80's. Even the one-hit wonders. So many good songs and evergreens. It was a another generation of musicians and producers. The german TV was better too. Not so much crap like today. I hate it. And I hate most of today's music. It's the same old story: the world looks and feels better, when you're young. But I will never, never forget the old days of good pop music. And I will always listen to it. Greetings from Germany.

  • 70's and 80's, best time of my life. This song brings back so many good memories. It's a real unbeatable classic.

  • when i learn to play the drums im gana learn to play this song...great band with cool music

  • Great song and band. I really think the "mainstream" hits were much much better back in these days than now. It was more often than not real musicians and not people picked out by record company´s and given a hit. Hate all this Lady Gaga alike "music" now.

  • @Bjoernbaks you´ve said it all!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Bjoernbaks You've gotta change your attitude. I've long changed my views on music. I accept all kinds now. You must remember this 80s music was hated by those who followed music in the 60s and 70s, in those days (the mid-80s).

  • @Bjoernbaks too true my mate

  • Great band, great song and one of the best bass players in the world.

But.. they can't play fake at all because it's pretty obvious that Mark insn't really playing his bass.

  • Great Great Great

  • Like "billyandgeorgie1508" said, this is when pop music was great! Fantastic band!

  • shame none of them are playing their instruments here :), but thats totp for you

  • oh so many memories

  • 80's/90's the best era for pop, omg I so loved this tune when I was at school

  • is it a good or bad thing that I was named after this song?

  • Only a good thing! I wish I'd have had such cool parents! I wish I'd been named Kyrie after the Mr Mister song...one of my all time faves!! I love this song too. Very sweet song and lyrics...

  • its a good thing. Level 42 are just so awesome

  • Great band - Extremely UNDERATED.

They p!ss all over the majority of bands today.

Music is so poor compared to how it used to be. Bands like Level 42 are real talent.

  • Totally agree bruv.

Great great band, with so many soulful funky vibes.

Dont know aboutt you but when I watch things like Beverly Hills Cop, the tunes are so mesmerizing and fantastic to listen too.

  • oh yes this is truly class

  • 21 years old and this is fucking class people!!

  • Fascinating, interesting discussion ,but what about level 42. Gotta like that JD bass ,Mark I believe had about a dozen go through his hands ,until he got his Alembic.

  • You engage your brain Jackass! You prattle is tedious in the extreme! Go back to listening to this shite, cauliflower ears! You lumpen fool.

  • Yet you keep coming back to this video to post your shite? Like I mentioned, engage your brain. Your either a shit troll, or someone so severely mentally challenged that in some countries they would have euthanised your sorry arse to erase the blip you are on society.

  • Ok Windy Miller I will muse and mull over your advice then cast it aside to its rightful place, the dustbin! You evidently are unable to take your own advice with regards engaging your brain as all that you wrote was tosh! Go back to hanging around street corners with your tracksuit bottoms tucked in to your socks, drinking white lightning and generally being a lumpen pratt! You are now dismissed. Here endeth the lesson.

  • I would like to see you play better than him Wislor, he is a very talented and charming man

  • the "spook" on keyboards is a disgrace

  • Indeed the spook on keyboards is a disgrace and like the twat king has a propensity to wear his trousers under his neck..i'd forgotten how shite this lot were...

  • Dave the festering sore on the back of humanity! You don't say so you? What are all these homo erotic latent tendencies your spouting! I guess by your vernacular that your a septic plum! You should really stop projecting your Joe Orton, cottaging fixations on to others and stop using the word douche! Ok beefy tits, see you later Nits!

  • feeling a tad sesquipedlian my friend??
