On this date in 1971 {Feb. 20th} "What's Going On" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 3 weeks} and spent 15 weeks in the Top 100.
Ranked 21st on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1971 chart...
Reached #1 on Billboard's R&B chart
Cyndi Lauper covered it, her version reached #12
Was the 1st of 3 straight records by Mr. Gaye to make the Top 10; this one, "Mercy Mercy Mercy" {#4}, & "Inner City Blues" {#9}...
I feel like I have been reborn again listening to all the past greats. I wish he had a more harmonous life. I am glad he realized his talent and was persistant on releasing this record. May 1 I just learned was named Marvin Gaye Day. Why isn't it acknowledge these days.
This is the piece from Bro. Marvin that made me want to be politically conscience. I was sixteen when this song first hit the air waves. I'll never forget the respect that I have developed for Bro. Marvin. It's still there and has increased. I miss you Bro. Marvin, it's a mean world without you.
“War is NOT the answer!” The World MUST "Wake-UP!" Parasites are "Sucking OUR Souls away!" A very small % of the World's population are Stealthily destroying this Planet and they are... "Zionist/Jews!" (Fact!) But; once The Millions of Jewry around the World Also "Wake-UP!" and understand that they TOO have been Massively Deceived; then it will be the Jewry who Also UNITE & FREE the World! Marvin was the consummate professional. His poise, his style, his uniqueness. He truly was one of a kind. The absolute King Of Cool! Not taking anything away from other artists, But Marvin was my favorite. I can listen to his music non stop.
Amazing Singer gone just think what he could be doing today. Whenever Marvin Gaye sang a song he put so much emotion in his music until it makes you want to cry and you felt the song in your heart.
This was such an honor, I remember once I got to see him at the scope and I was so busy trying to see Teddie that I missed marvin I have regretted it every since. So thank you for this post.
this was so POWERFUL in 1971 and it is today with "wha't going on" today with not only the wars, but all the conflict here in the United States with race and prejudice towards EVERYONE!
What a tragic end for another great artist whose own father shot him to death. The lesson as I see it: the world chews you up and spits you out! There's enough bigotry within our own family. Look at Presley, Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, etc. You gotta have your wits about you if you're gonna take on the world. The list of failures is a long list, from Mozart to Jackson. And the saga continues. But there is a way of escape! The LORD and Saviour, Jesus Christ. I won't force you on this but read...
Like John Lennon the world was robbed when Marvin Gaye was needlessly gunned down. How sad that there are people in the world who see themselves led to commit such hateful crimes.
Being shot dead by a hand gun is being shot dead by a hand gun, there is not any difference in the end result, by the way I was not comparing the two deaths.
@lavonlol being shot from a deeply conservative minister or being shot from a practising transvestite or being shot from the hand of your father-there is absolutely a difference in the end.jealousy fear resentment the very demons that made gayes music great.right!
u no at first this joka had me worried. he started out very rough, couldnt hit those notes, but as he got into it THE REAL MARVIN CAME OUT. HAHAHAHHA. AWESOME....
I believe his dad was a minister and Marvin had gotten pretty heavy into the "drug, alcohol, & sex scene" of the 70's. His dad couldn't cope with all of it. It happened around the time "Sexual Healing" song came out.
thats not true it was over money disputes, marvin jr. was losing money and was starting to sell homes he had, one of which marvin sr. was living in so when they got into an arguement marvin sr. used the gun, which was bought by his son to kill him. Either way it was very tragic i was born 7 years after he died but enjoy his music very much, i wish i couldve been at one of these concerts R.I.P. Marvin Pentz Gaye
Some of these Afro-American artist`s are among the best in the world, not to mention that they are (in general) generators (imperators) of SEVERAL music branches.
Love You Marvin Gaye R.I.P. To MR. Marvin Gaye!!!! We Miss your Music But You Always Will Be With Us!!!! And Whats Going On Baby.................. Wooooooo

When this originally aired I was just 10 years old. And like most in my age bracket thought the Michael Jackson performance stole the show. Now that I'm 36 I now know that Marvin Gaye's performance was the best and since he's become my favorite singer.
Perfect example of what soul music is. The ablilty to make you feel what he was feeling when he wrote it and when he sings it. There are alot of singers today, but very few artist.
Marvin Gaye was so blessed, but just didn't feel the love he so deperately needed. I believe we can hurt our kids so bad that it affects their whole life. Physical and emotional abuse from a parent can tragically end up like this. Disfunctional families sometime you can survive and sometimes not. You can feel his pain, love and begging for acceptance. Marvin, I wish you really knew how much you were loved........
