  • On this date in 1971 {Feb. 20th} "What's Going On" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 3 weeks} and spent 15 weeks in the Top 100.

    Ranked 21st on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1971 chart...

    Reached #1 on Billboard's R&B chart

Cyndi Lauper covered it, her version reached #12

Was the 1st of 3 straight records by Mr. Gaye to make the Top 10; this one, "Mercy Mercy Mercy" {#4}, & "Inner City Blues" {#9}...

  • what can I say the man the music the words

  • I feel like I have been reborn again listening to all the past greats. I wish he had a more harmonous life. I am glad he realized his talent and was persistant on releasing this record. May 1 I just learned was named Marvin Gaye Day. Why isn't it acknowledge these days.

  • This is the piece from Bro. Marvin that made me want to be politically conscience. I was sixteen when this song first hit the air waves. I'll never forget the respect that I have developed for Bro. Marvin. It's still there and has increased. I miss you Bro. Marvin, it's a mean world without you.

  • only complaint i got is his choice of pants to that jacket.

  • Awesome!

  • Absolutely one of the best of all time

  • What a great song, what a brilliant artist-one of the greatest!

  • Marvin was the consummate professional. His poise, his style, his uniqueness. He truly was one of a kind. The absolute King Of Cool! Not taking anything away from other artists, But Marvin was my favorite. I can listen to his music non stop.

  • Salve MArvin Gaye, esse foi embora antes do combinado... Grande músico

  • Very true song even in todays society. Marvin gaye was a true legend. R.I P.

  • He just makes it seem so effortless, which is really hard if you actually try and sing this song. Very very hard!!!

  • like this if you thought about the London riots today and wished life were as carefree as this song is :s

  • That man could sing and was sexy! Too bad I was a baby when he was around cuz I would have tried to get at him. Lol R.I.P Marvin!

  • @Agrelou that sounds so long ago but the album doesnt seem that old b/c it still matters

  • Amazing Singer gone just think what he could be doing today. Whenever Marvin Gaye sang a song he put so much emotion in his music until it makes you want to cry and you felt the song in your heart.

  • Amazing Singer gone just think what he could be doing today.

  • I Love You Marvin

  • This was such an honor, I remember once I got to see him at the scope and I was so busy trying to see Teddie that I missed marvin I have regretted it every since. So thank you for this post.

WHAT IS GOIN ON WITH THE WORLD TODAY???

  • I love this video..thanks so much for posting. They'll never be another like Marvin.

  • this was so POWERFUL in 1971 and it is today with "wha't going on" today with not only the wars, but all the conflict here in the United States with race and prejudice towards EVERYONE!

    A TRUE MASTERPICE

  • Mutha mutha mutha

  • I Love this!!!

  • What a tragic end for another great artist whose own father shot him to death. The lesson as I see it: the world chews you up and spits you out! There's enough bigotry within our own family. Look at Presley, Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, etc. You gotta have your wits about you if you're gonna take on the world. The list of failures is a long list, from Mozart to Jackson. And the saga continues. But there is a way of escape! The LORD and Saviour, Jesus Christ. I won't force you on this but read...

  • @utopiandesign JESUS IS THE ONLY WAY,AMEN!!

  • nobody today can even tie the shoelaces of my brother marvin . he reeks of soul.

  • Used to listen to Marvin back in the early 80's still love listening to him after all these years. May you RIP you are a soul man!!!!

  • I watched this perf. with tears running down my face; sing it my Brother! Wolfsky9

  • Wow feel the chills! Great performance

  • I can't believe the sooooullll in this man. Believe he is one of the finest interpretative vocalist that evvver lived! Praise be to the man.

  • Does this awesome tune ever get old? NO! :o) ~peace~

  • Incredible performer ! This is awesome ! Wow !! The one and only Marvin Gaye !

  • a hell of a guy, love u marvin

  • My favourite performance, along with Michael Jackson's Billy Jean, both from the Motown's 25th Anniversary DVD.God bless them both!

  • Miss you Marvin, Elvis, John, Freddie and Michael ... Thanks guys for all the great tunes!

  • i agree about Marvin, elvis and Michael, but Freddie and the dreamers were shite.

  • Yes Freddie Mercury of Queen not Freddie and the Dreamers. My god guy what where you thinking. LOL

  • Like John Lennon the world was robbed when Marvin Gaye was needlessly gunned down. How sad that there are people in the world who see themselves led to commit such hateful crimes.

  • can't really compre lennon's murder with gaye's murder. lennon was killed by a crazed "fan" gaye was killed by his own dad.

  • Being shot dead by a hand gun is being shot dead by a hand gun, there is not any difference in the end result, by the way I was not comparing the two deaths.

  • @lavonlol being shot from a deeply conservative minister or being shot from a practising transvestite or being shot from the hand of your father-there is absolutely a difference in the end.jealousy fear resentment the very demons that made gayes music great.right!

  • ust notice how he works the mic, never putting it directly in frnt of him. pure pro well taught

  • R.I.P. Mr. Marvin Gaye ... a True Legend...!

  • Marvin Gaye is unforgettable....

  • u no at first this joka had me worried. he started out very rough, couldnt hit those notes, but as he got into it THE REAL MARVIN CAME OUT. HAHAHAHHA. AWESOME....

  • i went to see him on his sexual healing tour. great show

  • Very much seen this Videoclip in The Bull Dog Amsterdam , The Netherlands.

Remembering the good times with a nice joint....

  • Thats a real singer right there!! Sing it brother!!

  • amazing, wonderful

  • The Master at his best......sadly missed

  • Oh what a treat ♥♥♥ these are the tunes that will immortalized for all time, a song with the same meaning today as it had in the 70s♥♥♥

  • Hey Marvin was like the Black Julio Iglesias..smooth romantic moves..only Marvin was real soul hornyfunky music...

  • Marvin is great but...Julio Iglesias ?????

Iglesias is a very bad singer, his songs are horrible...he's really very disgusting...

  • In my mind, Marvin and David Ruffin (check the Walk Away from Love video) are among the greatest soul singers there have ever been.

  • why did his father killed him?

  • I believe his dad was a minister and Marvin had gotten pretty heavy into the "drug, alcohol, & sex scene" of the 70's. His dad couldn't cope with all of it. It happened around the time "Sexual Healing" song came out.

  • Comment removed

  • his father had mental health issues

  • thats not true it was over money disputes, marvin jr. was losing money and was starting to sell homes he had, one of which marvin sr. was living in so when they got into an arguement marvin sr. used the gun, which was bought by his son to kill him. Either way it was very tragic i was born 7 years after he died but enjoy his music very much, i wish i couldve been at one of these concerts R.I.P. Marvin Pentz Gaye

  • Because he was jealous of his son's supadupasexy powers..and fame.he thought "Sexual Healing" was way over tha top so he shot him...

  • Some of these Afro-American artist`s are among the best in the world, not to mention that they are (in general) generators (imperators) of SEVERAL music branches.

  • African-americans have basically set the blueprint for modern music worldwide.

  • Timeless music. Awesome.

  • OH,my.How good looking was he??And charming..talented....

  • truly miss talent

  • classic performance from motown 25 it's motown 50th this year release this on dvd

  • This is music to feel and not to listen.

    Know what I mean?

    Rest In Peace brotha!

  • I definitely feel you. Peace.

  • @ptlofts Rest in peace and look down on us now, Marvin. We need your spirit more than ever these days!

    Terry Cavanagh

  • Love You Marvin Gaye R.I.P. To MR. Marvin Gaye!!!! We Miss your Music But You Always Will Be With Us!!!! And Whats Going On Baby.................. Wooooooo

  • I keep asking myself, "What the hell is going on?"

  • I would tell u but they would kill me for telling and kill u for knowing

  • One of the greatest songs of alltime.

  • If I were in that audience I would not be in my seat at all. I would be standing on my seat dancing. Marvin is so great. Gives me a great feeling.

  • It does exactly the same thing to me. This is my favourite Marvin video of all time!!!

  • When this originally aired I was just 10 years old. And like most in my age bracket thought the Michael Jackson performance stole the show. Now that I'm 36 I now know that Marvin Gaye's performance was the best and since he's become my favorite singer.

  • Perfect example of what soul music is. The ablilty to make you feel what he was feeling when he wrote it and when he sings it. There are alot of singers today, but very few artist.

  • wow, ive watched this video of marvin for over 20 years.. and still moves me every time. thanks marvin r.i.p.

  • Absolute perfection,if you feel it,your gettin it.Marvin Gaye .

  • This is the epitome of cool.

  • Isn't this just superb?

Awesome talent and vocal projection (look how far he keeps the mic away from his mouth)

  • this was his last television appearance before his death

  • Marvin Gaye was so blessed, but just didn't feel the love he so deperately needed. I believe we can hurt our kids so bad that it affects their whole life. Physical and emotional abuse from a parent can tragically end up like this. Disfunctional families sometime you can survive and sometimes not. You can feel his pain, love and begging for acceptance. Marvin, I wish you really knew how much you were loved........

  • wow you can feel the hurt and pain when he's singing....sounds like his heart is crying

  • from when is this performance?

  • Motown 25 in 1983.

  • supreme

  • What a POWERFUL performance RIP Marvin thanks.

  • No comparison to Marvin, classic song, awesome video, thanks for sharing!

  • A fantastic song, done by one of the greatest voice this world has known.

    RIP Marvin

  • LONG LIVE' THIS GREAT SONG

  • j'ai été créer grace a ce mec

  • When I listen this song only word in my mind is "WOW"..great song, my favourite song!
