Hi artkkw, thanks for posting this video. That's how I know this song. Would you mind if I can share my video which I just recorded after watching yours one. Thanks, Lang
I was so excited when I wrote my words 7 minutes ago that I didn't fullfill the sentence. Sorry! "The story might be a holllywood-dream but still a great wonderful film, because of the music, the fotography etc. etc.
Never get tired of seeing and hearing "The Great Waltz".
yesterday , a very dear friend of mine and I saw this wonderful picture "The Great Waltz" and we enjoyed it very much. It brings many happy memories to me. "when I was young" I saw it 15 times. The story might be "a hollywood-dream" but the music, the fotography, scenery, the acting of specially Louise Rainer and the wonderful voice of Miliza Korjus, whom I met personally and heard her singing (live) several times in Mexico. Thanks for the memory!
This clip starts with verse 2. Verse 1 was when he sang it to her in his living room (with his wife looking on) just after he wrote it for her. But, what a voice!
i can't believe i can still find this song over here. this movie and the song are both so touching. 71 years have passed after the movie was made, but it's still so attractive to us.
The original version of this song was actually known as "Wer Uns Getraut", (Who Marry Us, in English), from Johann Struass Junior's operatta "the Gypsy Baron". Lyrics was of course in German. Oscar Hammerstein II put in the English words as "One Day When We Were Young".
This song was in Joan Sutherlan's "Talking Picture" CD, Decca (London 417 470-2) 1987. When this movie was played, I was in high school then. We all were so crazy about it. I since bought both Laser & DVD version of it. The most moving part of it was when Strauss sang this song to Donner (Korjus), his wife Vogelbuber (Rainer) was behind her & thinking it was for her. She then realized the truth & was so disappointed. Her (Rainer's) facial action alone should won her an Oscar in this movie!
For you information, the original song is known as "Wer Uns Getreaut" (in German, meaning, Who Marry Us?) from the Operatta "the Gypsy Baron" by Johannn Strauss Junior. I have heard Mr. Andre Rieu performed this song in his concerts.
artkkw a million thanks to u for posting this beautiful song My sister n I shed a tear as this song brought us back to the days of my seven brothers who r no more with us artkkw have u got "The magic of your love"?Thank u again
I remember none of the film other than these closing moments, which have stayed with me these seventy years past. Isn't it strange, whole portions of memory can fall away like cliffs into the sea, and others seemingly of no great significance at the time live on for as long as we live. Thanks for the memory.
My grandmother used to sing me this song. It's called "One Day When We Were Young." The lyrics are by Oscar Hammerstein II. The music was composed by Johann Strauss the Younger and adapted by Dmitri Tiomkin. Thank you for posting this.
Finally I got to see my mother's favourite movie (she would've been 91 had she lived). She saw it during the era of the dutch colonial rule in the East Indies. Thanks for posting it.
A little info on Miliza Korjus. Her dates are 1912-1980, and she was born in Warsaw, Poland. She was imported from Germany in 1937 to star in The Great Waltz, an almost entirely fictional biography of Johann Strauss. It was the only Hollywood film she ever made, and she was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress.
There was actually a sequel to The Great Waltz, also starring Miliza Korjus. It was made in Mexico, and not many have seen it. I was lucky to have seen a screening of it once. It was poorly executed, but the advantage was that there was even more singing by the great Miliza. Wayne
Oh my god, this is my favourite song ever. My father sang to me when I was young. it seems a song between us....I never know where this song from. now, I know...thanks. thanks...thanks....I love you !!!!

Is there a colored version of the film? Or is there a remake I think from 1950s or 60's

@wizarda7x It was produced in 1930s, originally in BW. I prefer the original BW than those colored.
