@JonahMolina I used to see black tips all the time surfing on Maui for years...no one even gets out of the water when they're around. Still, I wouldn't want to get cut on the reef while they're around.
true scuba030, but there are good dive story sites on the net too. My favourite is the myscubastory site. They have dive stories about accidents, funny events, shark encounters, wreck discoveries, and they also have diving videos about the previous topics! Type myscubastory into google and its the first one.
The snorkler filming has unfortunately not much experience and is highly nervous, hence the bad camerawork. Blacktips are not at all dangerous to humans, so the guys are certailny not idiots but enjoying the amazing underwater world.
Bora Bora is a paradise. If u like it, then u will love Palau! This is top of the line.
oh, they are only little black tip reef sharks, fairly harmless but very curious. I swim with them all the time because they are one of the few species that I can study without feeling threatened. I've had them swim across my lap before and not care one bit that I was there with them. I wish I was that brave around bull's, tiger's, mako's, and great white's. (all though I have never been around great white's before YET, in my career). I hope to see them in their "world" before I retire.
Actually, your the ignorant one.....not the dudes in the video. Been watching too much Jaws. Sharks very rarely attack humans, only when provoked and the rare occasion when a shark mistakes a person for something else. They can actually sense your heartbeat and discern your emotional state without even looking at you. Very interesting creatures. If you try to free-dive like this when you aren't calm, sharks will run away. We kill 100 million sharks a year, they kill about 10 of us by mistake.
Uhhh, blacktip reef sharks, harmless really. They won't bite a soul usually. Never been a fatal attack, ever and research it in the shark attack files. They bite like a dog if there is a lot of bait around or a frenzy occurs, few stitches and done if that ever happens, rare. I'm an expert on them and dove with them many, many times. He's not an idiot, just they won't hurt you. Grey reef sharks are another story all together :)
@buminbeer2 Yes, I completely agree with you. Throughout my investigations and research with my job I have never seen nor heard of black tips biting or killing. I have heard of them "nipping" in a feed ceremony by humans, though. I have been diving and swimming with them and never had an issue of fear or any "scares" with black tips. Yes, grays are nasty and curious, leading to an actual attack of their area! Very territorial, like dogs! Where there is one gray u can bet there are many more!
LOL yea serious, there was no chasing - can't verify the "idiot" part either haha. And of course you don't hear about shark attacks in Bora Bora - maybe cause if there were, they would probably keep it under wraps. I have been there, it's awesome, but one thing - you never seem to sign any "waivers" haha
i want to go to bora bora so much it makes me sick (especially living on the east coast of canada brrrr). only i don't want to go just to visit! i would swim with those sharks and stingrays every damn day. keep in mind there are millions of people who swim in shark infested waters every day of their lives and not get attacked. besides, there is no record of any shark attack in the bora bora lagoon.
@stuartk Those are schooling blackfins...I wouldn't say "harmless". May be rare to be attacked by one but they are quick fish...You better believe they can scoop flesh from those bare legs quicker than you can say ouch.
I just got back from Bora Bora. I did the same thing. They are black tipped reef sharks, and it's not as dangerous as you would think because they aren't known to be dangerous sharks, although, obviously, their is an element of risk involved. I swam with about the same amount of black-tips, with a few being quite big--about 6-7 feet long. The dangerous part is seeing the large dangerous species below...10 ft long Lemon sharks cruising below near the bottom. That's what happened to me.
I was about 14, swimming at the end of the reef, and only sawone of these things...(the black tipped shark) and not knowing what they were, almosed crapped myself, and i have never swum so fast in all my life! Now i realize i was utterly safe i feel stupid!
Black tip reef sharks. Not prone to attack humans but if they are used to being fed then they could bite your hand off if you wave it around like that guy was doing. I also have never dove with sharks without a wetsuit and breather. Snorkeling does not provide the ability to monitor your underwater environment very well. Imagine heading to the surface for air while a shark is passing overhead.
Does no one take notice that this is in Bora Bora? That's Fiji. It's a tourist attraction to swim with this group of sharks that's been going on for years. I'd swim with them but I'd be afraid the large, mean variety of sharks might show up as well given that it's still open water.
I knew it was Bora Bora "hence" typing it in my comment above. It was the location of Bora Bora I got confused about. If you're going to be a smart alec, first try to be smart. :P
Ah you confused my meaning - and misquoted me. I said, "Does NO-one notice," cos I was pointing out to the folk thinking these sharks dangerous, that they aren't. (I'd be more worried about bigger ones coming to inspect! lol)
omg wut a stuped person if he hit 1 of the sharks on the sided he will be soooooooooo dead lol i wont to see blood lol i wish there was a shark fight =]
it's nurse shark not nerf shark and why would a nurse shark be swimming around in a school of fish trying to catch them? They're black tip reef sharks and they're not very dangerous.

Maybe hes on his period.
