A Star Is Born and Judy's Detox Judy Garland

If you guys listened to the commentary, these were all supposed to be 'incomplete takes', meaning they're not supposed to be exactly like the movie! And I'm sure Judy didn't have it perfect every time she did one of these scenes which is what these scenes in Me and My Shadows are supposed to be.

I'm sorry but Davis's reenactment's to Garland's scenes from "A Star Is Born" is absolutely aweful, didn't convince me one bit. She looked like she was trying TOO hard & that's what totally threw her whole portrayal of Garland's FLAWLESS acting skills off not giving it the smallest shred of the justice it truly deserved (hell just as much in real life when Judy watched her much deseved Oscar being presented to the grasp of Grace Kelly instead AND in this portrayal) ...to ME anyway.

@AbeNW11 I know right its like come on cut the drama if anything Marilyn Monroe now she was a tragedy her life compared to Judy's how was Judy's life tragic? she even said this herself it makes no sense the biggest tragedies were her father passing away, that affected her a lot yes she had a nervous breakdown who does not in this day and age look at Mariah Carey and Britney Spears okay yes she had a suicide attempt but how come Liz Taylor is not considered a tragedy huh? I think Marilyn was.

@AbeNW11 Marilyn Monroe had a melodramatic childhood and life not Judy. What happened to Marilyn was more of a tragedy look a orphan like childhood,and death by overdosing now that is sad because at least Judy had children who loved her dearly.

@cinderelmo Judy didn't have a melodramatic childhood? I think all of her problems stemmed directly from her childhood. Her fathers death, her stage mother who basically sold her soul to MGM studios, being pumped with drugs and eventually addicted before she was 17, being told she was ugly, being forced to get an abortion at 20? I mean the list goes on and on. I'm a die hard Judy fan, but I won't sugarcoat her life. It wasn't all tragic, but it wasn't all nice either.

@millers3888 Well from another die Judy fan and I mean die hard there is not a day and I mean it that does not go by that I remember her or think of her, I think that something that affected her a lot was her fathers passing, I get the feeling she got a long better with him than her stage mother, Judy even said herself " she was the real Wicked Witch Of The West" and I think Louis B.Mayer was a real jerk to her forcing her to get an abortion at the young age of 20, I know what you mean.

@millers3888 And I like that you put it like that cause her daughter Liza Minnelli said a sentiment similar to yours about sugarcoating her life, that despite all her personal ups and downs that yes even Judy admitted herself, Judy had a sense of humor through thick and thin, her life wasn't tragic but not all nice like you say but really whose life is, I think Hollywood screwed up not giving her the Oscar for A Star Is Born, but the worst to her was Louis B.Mayer, Sid Luft, and her mother.

@millers3888 And last but not least, I don't mean to spam LOL you but um I think Louis B Mayer was a real son of a female dog to poor Judy telling her she wasn't as pretty as Lana Turner, I think that he was a pervert, he was sadistic, I also heard he made Jimmy Stewart go to brothels to prove he was not gay, the man was clearly evil, as for Judy's husbands the worst had to be Sid Luft he physically abused her.

@millers3888 There were two dominating men the 30s and 40s Hitler and then there was Louis B. Mayer who even treated Jimmy Stewart bad or so I have heard and also in Judy's adult life I think her problems came from Alcohol and pills and finding her husband Vincent Minnelli having sex with another man or so I have heard and I think her biggest problems were here financial problems but her daughter Lorna is so dramatic but Liza says that Judy was so optimistic and funny despite whatever.

@cinderelmo No I love having conversations about Judy! Lol and I agree with pretty much everything you said. I dunno, to me Judy just seemed like she was always happy on the outside. She never gave an interview where she wasn't smiling or gracious, and she always gave everything to her fans. She never wanted to disappoint. But deep down there was damage there that was beyond repair. Low self esteem, a drug and alcohol problem, and her looks quickly fading. It never got easier for Judy.

@cinderelmo For someone who was so talented and kind to everybody, it just got harder and harder for her as time went on. She had nervous breakdowns during the 40's that affected her looks before she was 30. I know you said that having breakdowns was common and in many ways it is, but wanting to cut your throat or knowingly harm yourself is a desperate cry for help. She lost the Oscar (that must've really stung), her show got cancelled (the final blow).

@cinderelmo But through it all, I think if she had a normal, stable childhood with parents with a mother who supported her and loved her unconditionally, I think she could've made it. If I heard my 13 year old daughter being called fat and ugly, they'd be hunted down, driven to a ditch and disposed of.

@millers3888 I know, I agree but as an adult I think Judy's looks she got over that but in the 40's when she made Meet Me in St.Louis, The Pirate, etc. she felt more confident about her self and as an adult I think she felt pretty about herself cause the MGM, Lana Turner days were over but as an adult what screwed her up was her financial problems,that led to stress but she was mature by then her looks were the least of her problems in that era of her life in the 50's,60's.

@millers3888 Her looks that legend that she was insecure inferiority complex etc. Liza never talks about it, Lorna who is the more tragic sister/daughter talks about it, Judy only went through that in her early Mickey Rooney,Wizard Of Oz days but soon were gone she was pretty in my opinion cause of her big brown doe eyes Britney Spears looks a lot like Judy and Liza or is it just me right? but think about it the doe sad eyes see the resemblance?

@cinderelmo Liza had her own problems. She was too worried about the The Sterile Cuckoo then her own mothers funeral. But she did say in 1964, at the London Palladium that Judy never looked better, and it really made Judy happy. But when you watch A Star is Born or Judgment at Nuremberg she looks 10 to 20 years older then she was. I'm sure that bothered her. ike she said, the only time she felt beautiful was Meet Me in St Louis and through the 40's. But Summer Stock, she doesnt like that hot.

@cinderelmo And through the 50's she looked just awful. She was an awkward teenager, like all of us were at some point. Only Judy had movie execs telling her she was ugly. I know she was a child and she grew into her looks in the 40s, but that kind of treatment, for someone who was as sensitive as Judy, can do a whole lot of damage. When you look at drug addicts and alcoholics, most have very traumatic childhoods. Maybe Judy's wasn't horrifying, but it laid the foundation for her adult troubles.

@millers3888 No matter what Judy thought of her beauty or whatever I think and I am not just saying this that she was very beautiful like I said Britney Spears being doe eyed and what not looks a lot like a young Judy/Liza but when Judy lost weight in like the deleted Mr. Monotony scene and has more angular features she looks more like Natalie Portman but when she was fuller she looked like a young Britney, I think Britney should play her not Anne Hathaway shes to tall.Natalie Portman=Liza.

@cinderelmo But enough about that like I was saying if Judy would have stayed with Mickey Rooney in 1969 then maybe the story would have been very different than now but what do you think would have made a different outcome, I wish Liza or somebody would have helped her and said hey mama stay with me but Liza had two famous parents not one, and little Lorna and Joe were miners and could not even help themselves but Liza being 23 should have saved her mother from herself.

Oh well I think like Liza said she was just tired and I agree working since birth.

@cinderelmo To be honest, I think the only thing that could've saved Judy was if she stayed far, far away from Hollywood. But she was way too talented to not eventually be discovered. Mickey Rooney, while an old and dear friend, probably would not have been a good match for Judy. He was a womanizer and had his own problems with drugs and alcohol.

@millers3888 Well to be honest to save Judy from her own accident I think getting her away from Hollywood was not the problem cause when the "accident" happened to her it was in London of all places, but if you mean away from Hollywood as in showbuissness then I agree, she should have taken a year or two off, Liza should have taken care of her she was 23 and her mom was sick, Judy could have been saved......

@millers3888 ...She would have been here today to this very day, but s, she was 47 and tired working since she was young, but I can't blame Liza for what happened to her, but her mom was sick, she had two younger siblings, but I just wish fate intervened cause Judy needed help, unlike Marilyn Monroe everyone acts as if Judy was this child no she was an adult when that happened to her. Oh well I just wish somebody would have helped when she was frail. Her agents should have gave her a break.

@cinderelmo Anne Hathaway definitely looks more like Liza. Liza looks like a female version of her dad. Judy had a distinct look. I can see Britney Spears when she was young, but I think Tammy Blanchard was as close to Judy as they could get.

@millers3888 As for the look alikes um I think and always thought Britney Spears reminds me a lot of a young Judy and Liza,more Liza with the big doe eyes and sad eyes etc. um I think Anne Hathaway reminds me more of Liza than Judy,Natalie Portman was rumored to play but nah her features are to angular to play Judy,Judy had more round features and looks wise reminds me more of Katherine Heigl and Britney Spears for that reason, I think Natalie looks kinda like a young Liza.

@millers3888 If anything Natalie Portman looks like a young Audrey Hepburn but she could play Liza, um I think Britney despite what people think of her is talented and could play Judy and looks like her a young version the doe eyes and as older Judy I do see a resemblance with Sandra Bullock and Judy the dark brown hair doe eyes etc. but nah cast Anne as Liza not Judy but, I think young Judy,Britney older Judy,Sandra and Anne, Liza but I do think Liza looks like her mother the eyes.

@cinderelmo I think Judy had too distinct a look to look like anyone today. When I look at Britney when she was 16, and Judy during the Wizard of Oz, I see only a slight resemblance. In the end though, while this scene and movie as a whole was definitely over dramatic, I don't think Judy's wasn't. I think it was a two way street. She had great times, and really bad times. Just listen to the Judy Garland tapes. Drunken words are sober thoughts, and she said it herself, she was mad and angry.

Yeah, Judy Davis overdid Judy's singing mannerisms, they were too sharp, no flow or rhythm, which Judy Garland mastered at the age of twelve...I'm just glad no one was standing behind her Davis at 1:11, she could have cut someone's head off...that being said the CBS scene was unbelievably spot on, i get chills every time i watch it...overall, i give Judy Davis a B...It isn't easy playing a legend.

@IGiveMyLife2Follow I wasn't sure if your post was funny or serious. Judy Garland's voice can't be duplicated that perfectly. You can tell through out the entire movie that they were lip syncing to Judy Garland's voice. But There was a brief scene when she is hosting a party at Her home when she was married to Vincente Minnelli L.B Mayer asked her to sing at the piano. I dont know who's voice it was that brief time in the pic all I know it's definitely NOT Judy's voice. :-)

I am a great fan and admirer of Judy Davis, but we all have to admit this scene is TOTALLY Judy Garland's. I don't think anyone could do it exactly as she did it in "A Star is Born" and well, seeing this still gives me goosebumps, most of the movie had me with a knot in my throat, so that means this was brilliantly performed.
