Internal combustion engines waste 80+ percent of there energy/power creating friction and heat, electric powered systems lose approximately 20%, and are 80+ percent efficient at putting that power and torque to the ground. Also- electric motors only have one moving part(the stator), vs hundreds of moving parts for internal combustion engines.

How can torque not matter when torque is defined at the turning force on a moment? power isn't primary to make the wheel spin. torque is primary, and thats what the AC induction motor is primarily for. if it was power you were after, you'd be converting kinetic energy to electrical energy, which is a generator. thats the other way around. the motor transforms electrical energy into kinetic energy, in this case, the AC induction motor turns the chain/shaft drive, torque = BILsinX

Power is the rate at which torque is produced, 1 hp is equal to 550 lbft/s. When you run power through a transmission you can increase the torque all you want by having larger gear ratios, however the power you start with is all the power you get (actually you always have less power at the wheels due to losses in heat). So yep a 400kw 100lbft motor will beat a 350kw 400lbft motor all else being even.

Electric bikes are that fast off the line because unlike petrol engines you dont need to rev the engine, the torque is instant. The biggest problem is keeping the bike from flipping and putting the power down without ripping the tyres off.
