I think, in the end, just before she died, he did love her. Nowhere near as much as he loved Brenda, but he did end up loving Lily. He wouldn't have grieved as much as he did if had hadn't loved her on some level.

He grieved because he blamed himself for her and their sons life. I think he loved Lily as a person he cared for but I don't think he loved her romantically. It was the guilt and blood on his hands that sent him into a downward spiral. The beginning of the end for Sonny.

I'm going to happily disagree with you (not trying to argue here). Even at Lily's grave when Sonny was explaining to Juan about Lily's death, Juan asked Sonny if he loved Lily and Sonny replied, "I cared for Lily but I was in love with the other woman". And then Juan asked why he married her and Sonny replied, "I couldn't stay away from the other woman". And Sonny also admitted it to Jason after Lily died. Sonny has stated this numerous times. @kashiera1234 I agree, I watched intensely during that time when Lily and Miguel came on the scene, and Sonny did not love Lily...the so-called love of his life Lily was conjured up in his mind 'after' she was murdered (accidentally) by her own father. Sonny was still in love with Brenda, but he wanted to right by Lily because she was pregnant with his kid.

@PariNicole Sonny have admitted on occasion though that he did love her and was in love with her though, that she was the only woman that has treated him with respect and has actually truly supported him. He has also said that he trusted her the most. Some may say Sonny didnt love Lily whatever, I believe that he did, not in the beginning no but toward the end of her life and after she died it showed that he really did

@kashiera1234 AMEN. I think he did love Lily in his way. Not the way he loved Brenda, but I believe that while Lily was alive he treated her with far more respect than his "true love" Brenda. You never know what you have until it's gone, and Sonny didn't realize how much he truly loved her until she died. The same things happened in 2002 when Carly "died". They were going to get a divorce and he was moving on with Alexis until Carly's "death" made him realize he still loved her.

@neveah45 Sonny can only love the best way that Sonny knows. If he trusts you fully like Robin or Lily then he does love you or have passion for you like Carly and Brenda then he does love you. That is the way I see it. He treated Lily the way he treated his mother like she was special and like she was a queen. He kept saying she was just like his mother. Yea he didnt realize how much he loved her til she died thats why her death affected him so much otherwise why grieve at all and that is why

@neveah45 S&B are so angry cuz they know Sonny did love Lily. Same thing with Carson, he hated her yet still loved her with the exact same passion but with the "death" of Brenda could not be the same because he still loved her fully when he thought she was dead

Sonny loved Brenda and he CARED for Lily as a friend and he tried to make it work and he hoped that he would fall in love with her. If Sonny asked for an annulment or a divorce, Lily would have gave it to him. They were close but not IN LOVE. So stop calling Lily names. Miguel and Brenda had sex and he got with Lily.

yeah ,what is he talking about ? he was ready to leave her for brenda , till lily told him she was prego . of course she forgive him , did the writers think we forgot why sonny married lily in the 1st place ? lily would have forgiven sonny ,if she saw him having sex in her bed too !! helloooo ... lily didn't care how she got sonny ,as long as he was hers. how long were they happy ? a day or 2 and papa took care of everything .

The writers think we don't remember the episode even after it just aired, that's how insulting they are. I've yet to understand how or why they tried to re-write Sonny's feelings for Lily. Sure he cared about her and was extremely guilt ridden over her death but he was never IN LOVE with her. At the time Lily was one of the obstacles keeping him from Brenda who he was in love with.

So I hate how the writers made Sonny act like he was in love with her after she died..lol! During the Nurses Ball like, a day after she died... he was kissing Brenda like crazy at his penthouse.. he wouldn't have done that if he LOVED Lily so much.

I applaud Maurice for playing a role with such a hidden depth of darkness and twisted emotion, considering he is manic depressive in real life, which wold only make Sonny all the more difficult to play. I can only imagine what type of mentality & preparations he puts himself through to get by each scene. To optionally put yourself in that dark place where you usually try to avoid to maintain sanity. It must be scary.

Maurice deserves every ounce of love & appreciation as an actor.
