  • I just saw her perform at the Cotton Club in Tokyo and she put on a fantastic show. Wow! She is a gifted singer and musician - excellent guitar player. I got to meet her after the show and she was so charming and friendly. A class act! I told her I had had a crush on her since i saw Jesus Christ Super Star in 1973 and she then kissed me on the cheek. What a lady!

  • Other than Stevie Nicks, my favorite female rock vocalist ever. Yvonne-you're fantastic!

  • beautiful ... in love with her

  • Does it get better than this?

  • she is amazing!!!

  • Who the hell could dislike this?!!!

  • Bought this song/album in of all places ...Rockville Iceland 1972...slept to it , along with the 60mph breeze , blowing over the 120 degree radiator in my barracks room. Thanks for the memories!!!!

  • I admired her voice for many years but her feel for the guitar is a new one for me,outstanding, she is

  • I first heard this song on the album EC Was Here and Totally fell in love with Yvonne,s voice,As a novice guitarist I learnt the D chord variations started to understand how it works,Passion, sensitifity and a beautiful lady .Eric you are such a lucky man Guitars aside

  • Chrisb1953, this was on Blind Faith, the post-cream "Cream minus Jack Bruce" album with Steve Winwood. She did sing with Eric on a number of good songs and she sang this with him when they were touring together.

I think her "Food Of Love" and rendition of "Love's Bringing Me Down" and "The Moon Struck One" are hidden gems worth uncovering.

  • 'Like' doesn't seem a strong enough option for this one. I ADORE it.

  • Yvonne Elliman was a co-singer on Clapton's "461 Ocean Boulevard" album which included this song.

Then she switched to disco music ........

  • What year is this?

  • Love it!

  • This for me is one of the most beautiful songs and her voice is just amazing!

  • precisamente Clapton cuenta en su autobiografía que tuvo un rollete con ella... a mi me sonaba de aparecer en alguna composición de Jon Lord.

  • SHE wins

  • Wow. Found this on a random search - great song, and a beautiful remake.

  • brividi...

  • all i can say is...WOW!

  • I so vividly remember the first time I heard Yvonne sing. The British chat-show host, David Frost, had an American talk show (chat show, talk show, whatever) in the late '60s on one of the major nets. She came out and sang "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and I was mesmerised. At the age of 10, I fell in love with her. And I fell in love with music. BTW: Wolfgang's Vault has a great recording of a show she did at the legendary bottom line, shortly after leaving EC's band. Worth checking out.

  • I Don't Know Why I Love (Her)!!!!

  • What a beautiful voice!

  • fuckin hell thought she was a bee gees puppet ....she aint i will never be a sexist cunt again

  • This is good but there's a folk singer named Ellen McIlwaine that did the most amazing cover of this song back in 1971...I used to listen to it on KLOL 101 FM in Houston..Crash, baby!

  • ..And we have 'devolved' to Miley and Jessica......Beautiful, dear lady; just beautiful..

  • Hear this one.

  • Oh how mellow, loving this! =)

  • Just saw her in the Hawaii Five O episode with Tommy Sands....she is a sweet soul and is blessed with this beautiful voice...the next time I am in Hawaii I hope she is performing I would love to see her live...thanks for the post....

    Barry

  • Yvonne Ellimam rocks !

  • There is music, and there is this. This is something more. This video fills my soul like no other performance. Thank you.

  • I can not image she is the same singer who sang "if I can't have you".

  • Love Yvonne and this Blind Faith tune-great old-school 1970's cover with the (man or woman?) on harmonica and the guy in yellow on lead guitar make it extra sweet.

Yvonne was so special as Mary Magdelene in the original Jesus Christ Superstar play and movie in early 1970's and of course late 1970's disco days.

  • Every time I hear her sing this song it is the same. Decades & Decades have passed and it fills my heart and soul with it's beauty. Thank you Yvonne and Blind Faith for writing it.

  • Yvonne sang backup on many Clapton albums!

  • I've long been a fan of Elliman, a beautiful woman with a lovely, soulful voice. This cover is at least as good as the BF original. Does anybody know who's playing harp?

  • It's very young Marcy Levy with some "permed out" hair. I believe she now goes by the moniker of "Marcella Detroit".

  • thanks much for the info:) --

  • Anyone know what other females have sang this song (I mean that have either come out on soundtracks)?

  • Ellen McIlwaine does an amazing version of this song, but it is not on youtube. I have found it on yahoo music.

  • Thanks for the info. I just went on yahoo music and found it but I don't know how to listen to it since I'm not trying to buy it. Could you explain how that yahoo music thing works?? Thanks again.

  • I re-watch this every few months. Over and over. Simply exquisite. Thank you Yvonne.

  • Does anybody remember this song from E.C was here? Awesome song!!!!!

  • Incredible woman and musician. Lots of class and the talent to take a classic to the next level. Where did this video come from? Anymore?

  • Its from the BBC2 live music series 'Old Grey Whiste Test'

  • Great job!

  • amazing ...classics from the 70s

  • I've always loved this woman's voice and wanted to hear her do something special.

"Jesus Christ Superstar" was," If I can't Have You" was nice, for the times. But here we are and she is doing what I always knew she could do! This is beautiful....

I always felt her career simply didn't find "it's" way... Still, she gave us so much in JCS and then this.. Thanks for posting it here. Nice bass here, too!

  • Beautiful performance. And bassman Carl Radle... Outstanding. I miss him.

  • she really does this song juctice

  • Lets hear it for Carl Radle in this video!

  • What a bass player.

  • She s amazing and so much more than what we think....

  • Really great...Loved It! Brought back lots of good memories. Thanks

  • It's a great injustice that she is only remembered as a one hit wonder disco singer. She is so much more.

  • I totally agree. She is quite possibly the MOST underrated musician on the face of the planet. Her voice, especially on this rendition, gives me goosebumps. Hauntingly beautiful, perfectly fitting for this song.

  • totally agree with your comments. Fell upon this vid and it is a keeper.

  • Amazing!!!!!! Her voice is wonderful!!!!

  • Gorgeous.

  • This babe is hot and I love the way she sings.

  • Nice arrangement, sweet....... and of course Ms. Elliman is in absolute finest form, no doubt about it. Love you Yvonne.

  • One of the greatest songs ever composed...and Elliman is THE greatest interpreter. Yes, a performance for the ages.

  • Evonne sings like an angel.... sounds better than Clapton, and is prettier too...but this world doesn't seem to be very kind to angels...ML

  • damn right about that ! Peace ..

  • I've never seen this. This is awesome. Always knew she was a great singer but this is terrific.

  • Does it get better than this? If so, I have not seen it. Thank you Yvonne.

  • That is a performance that should probably be legendary. I never knew the name Yvonne Elliman before. I sure do now.

  • She sang the role of Mary Magdelene in "Jesus Christ Superstar" in the 70s and was BRILLIANT. You should check out a couple ~ "I Don't Know How To Love Him", and "Could We Start Again Please?" in particular. Brilliance. :)

  • very well, very rare and very great !

    Thanks !!!

  • ...not a dry eye was seen after hearing Yvonne's beautiful voice!

  • very talented

  • this is the most beautiful thing i've ever heard

  • Beautiful!!

  • This was real talent not like today's of Katy Perry

  • I'm not sure that's fair. Kate Perry might be a manufactured unit shifter, but you must admit she's got a clear vocal talent even if she's not a true singer/songwriter.

  • sooo good.gives me a hard on,man.

  • Does anyone know if Allison Krause covered this, and if so...whare can I find it???

  • Thanks for posting this song, it really touches me too!

  • her voice really touches me...

  • Yvonne's voice is soooooo suited for this song.

  • She is one of the most underrated and under-appreciated singers of the rock era.

Her voice is like dark chocolate wrapped in silk... rich, complex, sweet, but not too sweet, with the slightest aftertaste of melancholy. Yet oh, so smooth.

After all of these years, it goes down easier than ever.

  • So beautiful.

  • I love you, Yvonne.

  • She have a so beautiful eyes

  • This is so amazing to see ... thanks for posting.. luv you Yvonne

  • Like this better than the original by Blind Faith.

  • She has such a great voice, Loved her in Jesus Christ Superstar, she was part of the original cast....such emotion when she sings...

  • Love her. Love this song!

  • Remember this from Buffy soundtrack

  • Do you know which episode it was in?

  • She s the mother of one of eric clapton s children.

  • IMDBdotCom gives credit to Yvonne for singing backup w/Eric Clapton; and credit for her two children to her second husband (Wade Hyman.)

  • Wonderful...

    LJH

  • Wow! Haven't seen her for a while. Nice that you posted this video. Thanks.

  • America's got talent !

  • What a talented voice. She was so underrated in the 70's and didn't get the exposure she deserved.

  • yeah.. she got Mary Magdalene's part in Jesus Christ Superstar, yet there were only some who recognized her talent.. she has an amazing voice

  • WOW!!!! this is great

  • Now this is a real treat.

  • I was just listening to the version on the 461 deluxe edition - thought I would check youtube, and there it is. And that's Marcy Levy on harmonica, who wrote Lay Down Sally and become one half of shakespear's sister

  • are you serious??? my god shes awesome at harp, singing whats next?

  • Does anyone know who sang this at the end of the last ep season 2 of Brothers and Sisters??

  • The name of the singer is Ellen McIlwaine.

  • angelindisguise80 - many thnx. lol!

  • awesome

  • ahhhhh,,,marry me,lol,,i love this

  • a talented lady - she shines here ...

  • namidaga demasu

  • sweet

  • Love her voice. I was about 10 or 11 when she had a sting of hits in the late '70s so I was too young to be into music. These days 10 years olds are into music big time but back then kids were not. Not long ago I had the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack but it was stolen. On that album "If I Can't Have You" and got turned on to her music. She has one of the best, if not best female singing voices I have heard. In addition to C&H Sugar and the Aloha spirit she is one of Hawaii's best exports!

  • Good version...for another really good version, check out Allison Kraus' version on her brother Viktor's album.

  • great song and great performance

  • She always sang this way better than Stevie Winwood IMO. Check out the 2 disc deluxe edition of 461 Ocean Boulevard for another great Elliman performance.

  • This was one of my favorite songs from Blind Faith!! Yvonne Elliman was one of the most Beautiful artist of the time!! Her work echos through the stars and is loved by many!

  • Yvonne, who knew?!

  • HOT!!!!!!!

  • great song, great performance...thanks for the upload...

  • Wow...I have been in love with her since I was 6, when I saw her photo and heard her in the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack...beautiful woman.

  • never realised she was so pretty

  • The best song I have heard in years by anyone!!

Two versions are on : The Best of Yvonne Elliman.

    # Audio CD (April 22, 1997)

    # Original Release Date: April 22, 1997

    # Number of Discs: 1

    # Label: Polygram Records

Don't be fooled by other "Best Of's" they do not contain this track.

  • hot stuff

  • Beautiful

  • her daughter can wail too, and is way hot!!!

  • I recently saw Yvonne at the American Lung Associations "Breathe" Concert and she sang "Simply Needs". She's very nice, approachable and humble. Hawaii is so very proud of her and her accomplishments and now...I'm grateful and blessed to call her friend! Aloha, Michi

  • To all those who thought "If I Can't Have You" was all she had to offer...

  • god, she can SING!!!!!!

    Yvonne, where are you now????

  • She's alive and well, living in Hawaii and still singing. I've met her, lovely lady.

  • lucky you. i've played this thing a couple of times, and it gets better every time.

  • You may know this already but that's Stevie Windwood song.

  • Simply SUBLIME!

  • Stunning!

  • Yes. Yvonne Elliman is awesome!

  • They don't make them like this any more. She sung live on the italian version of "if i can't have you." She was great!

  • Happy Birthday Yvonne! (we're born on the same day)

Ellen McIlwaine does this nicely too. This one's even slower. Very nice indeed.

  • Also, check out Bonnie Raitt's version, if you can find it (I can't!) - it is AMAZING

  • Awesome!

  • i..............am...................IMPRESSED!

  • Simply beautiful.

  • That's funny, I always thought she was Filipino too, never knew it was Chinese & Japanese and Irish. She is very pretty whatever the mix! And an AWESOME singer!

  • An anthem for Right Now.

And Yvonne's vocal spirit is just all about purity and actuality.

    Really.

    Thanks for the post.

  • Pure singing. No tricks; no triplets; no yodeling... no whining. I love her style.

  • Yvonne you are the best i love you

  • When I hear Yvonne Elliman singing, I get a real mellow feeling inside of me because thats what her songs do to me.

  • a true vocal talent, i just love her voice.fantastic

  • I love this song and her version of this classic song.

Yvonne is credited with background vocals for Clapton on many of his songs in the 1970's.

  • Blind Faith in my opinion was Eric Clapton's finest band! Unfortunitly they only produced one album. I love the way Yvonne Elliman did this song. She is a beautifully talented musician. She is back and has new material and a web site. Look it up and check it out.

  • awsome. I never heard her perform solo, but I loved when she sang on the slowhand album.

  • Nice song!!! Never knew Ms. Elliman made so many nice songs. Heh heh, Pinoys quit trying to claim her (u have enough talented singers and musicians, LOL), she's of part Chinese and Jpnse ethnicities to go along w/ her father's Irish roots.

  • Michelle Branch is the second coming of Yvonne Elliman, she is so similar!

  • yvonne is irish, japanese, and chinese. love this song!

  • Serie´s music?Which is?Thank you.

  • It's proof and evidence that filipinos can sing country music/blue grass music too. It's too bad she didn't continue on the musical career bandwagon, but family comes first.

  • So she is half filipino or half japanese chinese n d father is irish descent. im proud if she is half filipino, a lot of filipino live in hawaii. Mabuhay

  • Not quite, half Irish, 1/4 Japanese and 1/4 Chinese. I know this is a disappointment, I am a big Yvonne Elliman fan too but she really doesn't have a Pinoy ethnicity - unless I am proven wrong.

  • Mary Levy (Marcella Detroit) is no slouch either! This must've been their spotlight during the EC show.

  • I just downloaded it from iTunes. Fantastic version of this song.

  • Damn she's gorgeous. Wonderful voice, too. I love this woman.

  • I love this song...For some reasons it became quite familiar to me some years ago. I learned my first English words with this song...Means to me a lot, like fresh water in the desert. She will understand.

    The Poet.

  • WOW. that was amazing

  • I never realized how good a guitarist she is. The friggin' Bee Gees ruined her. After her contributions to "Saturday Night Fever" her career was basically all over. If you can find an album called "Food of Love" dig it up. She does that song (I think) and also a fantastic version of "I Can't Explain" (The Who).

  • yup.. got it. they very first yvonne elliman record was called "yvonne elliman" very rare and it took me 4 years to get

  • The Bee Gees did not ruin her. She stopped recording on her own accord to raise a family.

  • Too bad too, her music was great. Loved the "Yvonne" album that followed "Night Flight" - never heard anything from her after that. Also loved her on Hawaii Five O' with James Darren. She did "I Can't Get You Outta My Mind" on that one.

  • OK, apparently this is NOT out on DVD. So if you want the show you'll have to buy the video off ebay or something.

  • it is out on dvd some were, it took me ages to get it.

  • Does anybody know where I can find a copy of this show?

  • its the bbc clapton whistletest dvd from 76 ish i think

  • What a beautiful song, I had never heard it before. Yvonne Elliman's voice is so sweet and innocent. She sure looked good back in the 70's. Sexy and talented lady...thanks for posting this video.
