  • Soo do they have all the episodes from 1956 on down on dvd?

  • @HoneyLove210 Hell no... the show was done live from 1956 to 1975... and as far as I know, P&G didn't start saving their tapes until about 1978...

  • This is exactly the music and credits that should have rolled after the final words Bob Hughes whispered when he said "Goodnight" in the last scene of the program. I actually thought it was coming... how perfect it would have been - with that globe on his desk slowly morphing into this one..... Oh well.....

  • One of the great soap themes

  • Did they do product placement as part of the sponsorship, ("I just love this coffee! And look, the outside of the mug is so clean!") Or was it just kept to the intro?

  • GREG MAY of Orlando, FL says: "My mother, RUTH MAY never missed an episode of ATWT. She got hooked from the very beginning in 1956 while awaiting my debut in the world. Daddy bought her a 20" Motorola TV which we had for years after we moved to Florida. The opening of ATWT was a staple in the May household every weekday at 1:30PM EST. In 1977 EILEEN FULTON brought her cabaret act to Orlando and I got my parents tickets to go see their beloved 'Lisa'.

  • The Secret Storm, The Guiding light, The Love of Life, Search for Tomorrow and of course, As the World Turns--the theme songs happily remind me of grade school, the early 60s, my childhood home, and with great warmth--my mother and her love and loyalty to all of these programs. Thank you for the upload!

  • Dear God, when I always heard that one piano note I knew it was time for THE SOAP!!! Although not bad in their own right (and especially when compared to today) I would sometimes briefly glance at LOVE OF LIFE, YOUNG & RESTLESS, and SEARCH FOR TOMORROW, but it was ATWT that was THE SHOW! I first watched in 1978 and this was THE THEME and title they were using. God, the memories. I would literally pay to see those 3 years over again. Just magnificent!!!!

  • The only thing that's missing from this theme is the 'do-ing' tone from the piano, that was part of the original organ theme, and part of the orchestrated version for the first few years. This version also reminds me a bit of Barry White's "Love Theme" from the Love Unlimited Orchestra's "Rhapsody in White." album. Both are in the same key of D natural Major, and have that wonderul, rolling, blooming orchestration.

  • This is "comfort music". I just here this I I feel like I'm 6 again. The organ version is even better.

  • Awww. Such a nice soothing theme. And that guy's voice is so...just amazing.

  • @notthefather That's Dan McCullough, the frst announcer on ATWT! McCullough retired in 1982 to make way for the other ATWT announcer, Dan Region, who left in 1998!

  • Both my Grandmothers were ATWT lovers and although I do not remember this too well...since I am in my early 30s I probably saw this opening! As for me and my parents we love "The Young and the Restless!"

  • Wow, does this bring back memories. My mom would let me watch this & others when i was a kid. This almost got me teary. From that opening it took me back to a simpler time.

  • This was the best opening for ATWT, I think, though I also liked a couple of the others. I liked many of the rich, orchestral sounds of soaps' opening themes developed in the '70s.

  • @charlotteguy7 You said it! The 70's seem to be that period of time when just about every show had a gorgeous and unique theme tied to it, as well as beautiful title designs and background graphics. Boy, those days have been long gone....

  • I fought tears watching this. It brings back so many memories of my mom, grandmother and aunts, and how I grew up watching ATWT with them. I will have the ATWT blues all week...Its last episode is this Friday. Change is so bittersweet. ATWT is an icon, just as its sponsors, Tide Detergent and Folgers Coffee. It will be truly missed.

  • @soap1919jt . . . I whole heartedly agree with your comments. I remember when this theme stopped being used in the fall of 1981. That alone was a major travesty!! I remember when this soap used to be interesting, then it faultered. Too bad . . . sometimes if you love something you just have to set it free.

  • @softwater88

The reason that ATWT & Other P&G Soap operas got a makeover is because ABC was killing it with daytime at the time in the early 1980's

  • @jmjfanss Yeah.... the whole Luke and Laura era!

  • @GayUOPXBoy10

Yep and P&G shows were suffering ratings in the 1980's.

  • @jmjfanss At least they lasted an almost 30 years!

  • @GayUOPXBoy10

and thank god P&G made the change to new openings and logos.

  • @jmjfanss Well.... they could of kept that theme but just upgrade it!

  • @GayUOPXBoy10

But sadly, they had to change it for younger audiences, plus a year later steve & betsy.

  • @jmjfanss Did they get younger viewers? My Mom was never into ATWT... she switched over to ABC soaps but now my parents just watch Y&R!

  • @GayUOPXBoy10

    Yes they did.

  • @jmjfanss Wow.... just by changing the theme? Or was it because of Steve and Betsy? LOL! Actually, it was the next theme that I remember very well from childhood! That was a great theme!

  • @GayUOPXBoy10

and the computer graphics was nice.

  • @jmjfanss Yes..... but I think the 1983-1985 theme of "The Guiding Light" was the most classiest! I watched "The Guiding Light" during the last few months of LuJack (Vincent Irrizary) on the show! That was late 1985! LOL!

  • @GayUOPXBoy10

    Doug Marland Saved ATWT.

  • doug marland ruined ATWT

  • @baf236

    Your dead wrong.

  • @baf236 Douglas Marland WAS "As the World Turns". He saved it and probably wrote the best story lines in the history of daytime television. CHRIS GOUTMAN RUINED ATWT

  • @wilshirejohn1

It got ruined after marland died until 1998 and the hogan sheffer era.

  • @jmjfanss 1999 (after 21 years) is when I could no longer stomach this once magnificently interesting soap. It turned into either the Jack and Carly hour, or the Rose and Lily hour, or the Katy and Simon and Henry hour. It was beyond awful and it NEVER found its way back!

  • @TimsDale4ever

That's your Opinion, But Hogan Sheffer brought this soap back to life.

  • @GayUOPXBoy10 duh, He Left GL Now Turned AMC

  • @CosmoCosma10 Yes, and he was on "The Young and the Restless" for a while, a few years back!

  • All I can say is that I will MISS this show so much....CBS, Proctor & Gamble & ESPECIALLY Moonvies, president & CEO of CBS & husband of Julie "awful" Chen, whose bullshit talk show will be replacing ATWT, should all be ashamed for what they have done. I hope Chens' show tanks & losses millions, of course CBS or Moonvies will never admit it. They'll blame Y&R. Richie.

  • @amtrak79 They want to compete with The View. The new show is called The Talk. I guess they figure that the audience might think it's The View and tune in.

    I hope it fails.

  • @amtrak79 I agree! I figured he ditched ATWT so she could have a talk show.

  • This brings back memories of summers with my grandmother and the few hours she had to devote to her soaps on the weekdays. Hell, I enjoyed watching them as much as she did! Thanks for the posting.

  • @Duck8107 . . . I agree ! ! Too bad the soaps tried to be like a prime-time searies. Yuucckkk, on today's soaps. Change is constant, but not necessarily for the better.

  • That's what makes it a soap opera...

  • @mrrossjonathan . . . Exactly!! I grew up on soaps in the mid-70's. When the plots were interesting. All the actors were middle-aged, and the soap-themes were just what soap-themes were supposed to be. Not some imitation of a prime-time TV series.

  • Ah, the memories . . . this was how the show opened when I first started watching in 1980

  • I remember this one. Dayum!

  • I wish they would play this theme one more time before the final episode or the final episode.

  • @Tommy6583

or maybe the world turns on and on.

  • @Tommy6583 I second that. But they won't. CBS wants people to forget lthe soap opera and tune into their new show, The Talk. I hope the new show fails. I hope they have no succcess with anythng until they premier a new soap opera.

  • loved it!

  • Not good..

  • This is so much better than the current ATWT opening!

  • wow, it's like taking a time machine through time.

  • I used to love the graphics, too! That was incredible graphic artistry for that time. The original ATWT logo, here reminds me of a big, pretty white smile zooming out at me.

  • like the mountain grown Folgers and mild Ivory liquid graphics.

  • Two observations: Game shows are cheaper to produce than soap operas. Ever watch the credits on "The Price is Right?" Most of the prizes are donated for free or for "less than actual retail price" just so they can plug Gold Bond Medicated Powder, Campbell's Soup, etc. And even the most outlandish plots on ATWT, GL or any other soap opera took a major hit in the wake of the O. J. Simpson trial; even the strangest reality show is more attractive than the most realistic soap opera, to some people!

  • it isn't just about ratings because SNL has been on for 30+ yrs and has never had huge ratings since the 80s. I think CBS is making way for some new soaps or something idk

  • The beautiful and regal opening so fit this show. It was the one all others were compared to both critically and ratings wise. I have been watching since 1965 and can't believe it will be gone.

  • wow.. that's a REALLY long time. I always thought I'd watch it all my life, but sadly it's ending in september

  • @Robert4770 Beautiful and regal are two of the absolute best words to describe this theme. I truly miss this soap. Losing it has left a permanent void in televison.

  • Here's the sad thing we all forget, and I'm guilty of it, too. Broadcast television is not a public service. It is an advertising medium. It is a for-profit business. If the cost of production is > the $ they bring in, they're no longer profitable. I work weekdays & am no longer able to watch these soaps I loved years ago during their broadcasts now, so the advertisers' $ is wasted on me.

  • CBS did what it had to do, giving ATWT its walking papers, along with the other P&G soap, Guiding Light! Now, there are no P&G soaps left! They're all gone bye-bye! Only thing left on CBS's roster(as far as daytime is concerned)is "The Young & The Restless" and "The Bold & The Beautiful"

  • Thank you Chicago10281 because of course we didn't know that info ourselves...

  • Really too sad to see this soap go. I stopped watching in 1981, but it was always there. CBS is stupid, and the writers of ATWT are stupid trying to appease to the under 30 Starbucks/cell-phone crowd. On the other end of that spectrum is the baby boomer market which should be appeased/addressed also. Nowdays, there are a lot more viewing choices at 1:00pm Mon-Fri. Especially if one has cable/internet/satellite. I swear to God we don't need another reality show ! ! !

  • @softwater88 I agree, I'm 27 and am so tired of reality tv!!! They always get rid of the good shows!

  • Sad to say goodbye to something that has been part of my day since 1965.

  • i feel like cbs took a knife, and stabbed it in my heart when they announced that as the world turns is going to end next year. i LOVED that soap opera since i was a child, and now at 27 years old, i feel like i'm going to miss a soap opera that meant so much to the world. i feel your pain, too. curse CBS all the way!!!

  • I know how you feel. I grew up with the CBS lineup and always had a soft spot for it. It still seems unreal they would cancel it. Guiding Light I could handle better but this comes as a major blow!

  • Curse you? How about more like FK YOU CBS! While not heavily into ATWT the past 3 years, i did have my moments as a kid watching with my mom and during the Sheffer years after the cancellation of my beloved AW. This one feels just as bad as the axe falling on AW actually :(

  • I still can't believe its happening, I have watched since 1965, CBS will never again be on in my house.

  • It's truly the end of an era. ATWT was always the heart of the CBS daytime lineup airing in the middle of the day. Times aren't changing for the better that is for sure.

  • I'm sure CBS, the most watched network in America, will take that lightly.

Honestly, people, a lot of you are complaining about the cancellation...instead of blaming CBS for cancelling ATWT, why don't you criticize yourselves, the fanbase, for not watching anymore? It's a ratings issue, nothing else. And it's kinda hard to ignore such a precipitous drop in the ratings.

    You're all overreacting.

  • The world makes its final turn in September ...CURSE YOU CBS

  • Just for facts, that is a waxing gibbous Earth!

  • If you want to see a beautiful closing with this theme, search "ATWT 1980" and click on the closing one. Even though it's complete, it lacks the "crew" section of the credits. So beautiful and grand, with a crawl slow enough you can actually read!!!!......This theme/title was what was being used when I started watching in 1978. I was heart broken when it was replaced on 10/26/81. I still miss those days of ATWT when it was truly THE show to watch...

  • It went from a classic organ to a full grand symphony, keeping the original theme intact. Nicely done.

  • This is the version from my childhood...beautiful music by Charles Paul...takes me back to lunchtime, watching this with my family...Cheers to the Hughes and Stewart families of that era!

  • As the worl-d turns... Interesting way of pronouncing it.

    How time flies... :(

  • whatever you gus think I gues

  • This was IT guys and gals! Most beautiful, realistic globe design in their now 53 year history. Very pronounced continents and beautiful blue oceans -- love that slight shadowing on the left side, the slightly tilting gradual turn. Like you're sitting on the moon watching the WORLD TURN. Title design compliments the globe -- not cover it up. Gorgeous music! Their title and themes went to hell after this one...

  • I agree. This was the best. The first of the modern versions was OK for what it was (except the Earth bounced around), but they've strayed so far from this concept now. Too bad.

  • @dalehinely

The reason why they changed the opening sequences, because ABC at that time in the 80's had hotter soaps.

  • my my, how this show has changed.

  • a few updates are good. like Days of Our Lives. same theme with moderate changes. All My Childran also changed to a horrible theme after 20 yrs. Days is still the bomb. MacDonald Carey: like sands throught the hourglass..

  • If I was in charge of this show, the first change I'd make is going back to the theme from the 70s or 80s...but I would not keep the CRAP they have for the opening today.

  • ATWT really should have continued with this great opening. This is the best opening ever!

  • Yes, You're right. But I'll never forget the Original Version of this show hearing the organ Music.

  • I always imagine during the 1980's that soap operas have saturday morning bumpers. Isn't that both weird and insane-I thought so!

  • my heart melts when i see this theme that i have never seen in my life. thanks so much for posting this memorable video.

  • Go back to this opening. Why change something that is perfect just the way it is?

  • WHOA! Have never seen this one.

    thanks for posting

  • Every time I hear the original "ATWT" music (such as this), it brings tears to my eyes...and many memories of my mother, who stopped whatever she was doing at 12:30 every weekday afternoon to watch "Lisa" and the goings-on of the Hughes family...

thanks for bringing THE definitive "ATWT" theme music back for us!

  • "Proctor & Gamble" benefited from the original show with the Organ Music playing.

  • I remember as far back as late 70's/early 80s my mom letting me watch. This opening is CLASIC.

  • Now you all did know that ATWT came on CBS Television in April of 1956(April 2, 1956, that is)and started out with the organ/piano music and then jumped to orchestrational music in 1973. Can anybody here tell me what you think of ATWT's current opening without the announcers?

  • I like the current music. I think it fits for todays times. But I must say, I liked the 1986 opening the best. I liked the Martha Byrne Lilly the best too. In those days her and Holden and the Iva and Rod Drama was wild. But now, I think ATWT is really good again. I wish they would show Luke more.

  • I quit watching this show after they stopped using this theme. The producers really screwed up by changing the music.

  • You know, I wasn't an As The World Turns fan. I was strictly abc Daytime. Yet, even I would change the channel briefly to hear this theme song, and see the spinning globe, when it came on !

  • Did you know that ATWT premiered on April 2, 1956? Also, have you seen the new 2009 opening version of it?

  • You stopped watching an hour of a soap opera because the music wasn't the same for 30 seconds?

  • 30mphs - yes, I eventually stopped watching because I figured that when they decided to make the music more "modern" the producers would eventually start messing around with other aspects of the show as well. At first, I just skipped the theme music because I have a near pathological dislike for most disco/rock-type music. I still watched for a little while longer but refused to countenance that new theme music. Later, I worked different hours and wasn't home during the daytime.

  • I love this theme! It's the cream of the crop theme of all soap themes IMO...

  • Does anybody have any information on Charles Paul? He did all those original organ pieces, but also was the composer on General Hospital during the Luke and Laura years. I'd like to hear the opening theme he wrote for One Life To Live

  • if i'm not mistaken, this would have been OLTL's original theme, of which there were two versions from 1968-75, before Jack Urbont came in with his thing..Charles Paul, with live organ and recorded music, had to be the biggest suppliers during the 50s, 60s and 70s..AMCn OLTL, ATWT (live and recorded), GL (live and recorded) ,Secret Storm, The Road of Life, Ryan's Hope..the only way i know to get an audio of this is through an e-mail address..send me a personal message if interested...

  • I don't give out my email. I'm just hoping, maybe one day in the future, we'll see a lot more samples of Charles Paul's work, up online. Charles Paul must have been a musical genius, some of his Luke and Laura, and other GH background music compositions were very advanced and exciting during the late 70s/early 80s on GH. It's hard to believe he was the same person who started out creating all those original organ pieces!

  • @maxineweiss Just saw your comment regarding Charles Paul. Please check out my tribute channel to him, and to his colleague, Eddie Layton (my former organ teacher).

    Regards from NYC!

  • Anybody remember Dan McCullough?

  • Dan McCullough was a CBS staff announcer back in the 1980s. Hal Simms, Alan Berns, and other CBS staff announcers did the voice-overs to the openings and closing to many CBS soaps back then.

  • he was the announcer for ATWT during its first 25 years..shortly after Elliot Lawrence Productions began doing music for ATWT, Dan Mc Cullough left, supposedly in favor of a younger announcer...

  • @grhdanny That younger announcer who stayed on with ATWT until the end of July 1998 was Dan Region

  • This was one of early TV's iconic images: the spinning globe accompanied by the dramatic theme music. They really should bring back this music, just update it with a contemporary arrangement (the same way General Hospital updated its theme in the 90s).

  • I was soooo young (6 yrs old max), yet truly remember this opening. That image of the globe turning etc..yep havent seen it in maybe 28 yrs :( till now, yet never 4got

  • i prefer the 70s-early 80s version..can't make 'em like that anymore:)

  • I liked this opening but I prefer the one from 1981-1993. Maybe its just because I am too young to remember this one.

  • Also, Charles Paul wrote the theme music(1956-1982)

  • The theme music was only used until October 30, 1981.

  • "As the W_H_I_R_L_L_L - - D_U_H Turns!

Love the old time announcer style...

  • That was Dan McCullough, ATWT's first announcer from 1956-1982! He was later replaced by Dan Region, a much younger announcer from 1982-1998!

  • This opening makes it look like a good, decent TV show when it's actually a cheap production with awful dialogue and terrible acting.

  • This is one of the best openings and the music makes it seem like it was a good show, real storytelling.

    Today it's not even close.

  • Thanks for posting this. I tried to get a membership on WOST, but they have been playing games for years. Now they are saying no new members and that they will be shutting down in Aug 2009. They can go suck eggs/. YouTube will be the place for all these classic themes.

  • Yeah you are better off not joining that group, it's a bunch of crap anyway. I mean they charge for things you can see right here on youtube for free, which shouldn't be allowed, but oh well.

  • I am glad I reread this. Didn't come out like I wanted. What I meant shouldn't be allowed is WOST charging money for people to watch soap opera stuff that we can see for free on youtube. You are best to just stay away from that group, not just for the reason of them charging, but you have to agree with EVERYTHING said on the board, AND, if you didn't worship Another World more than As The World Turns, they make life hell on that board.

  • WOST was charging money for the support of the website operations. No money was taken for personal gain. New membership applications ceased as the site co-ordinator was tired of the politics of some of the members. Brian Puckett did his best.

  • The big kicker about these fans who worship AW....where were they when the ratings were in the toilet?

  • WoST is still up yet inaccessible but diva Brian never refunded a dime to anyone who paid through Aug. 2009 and emails to him are returned. Yet another temper tantrum, no doubt.

  • OR maybe he is in jail for charging people to watch other people's copyrighted materials. He should be at least.

  • Brings back a whole flood of memories.

  • This in my opinion is the best ever opening of ATWT.

  • They should still use this today...I hate the one they have now--absolutely hate it and want to mute the TV when I hear that music.

  • This clip features ATWT's original announcer, Dan McCollough, who was with the show from 1956 to 1981. McCollough was replaced by Dan Region, who stayed until 1998.

  • This was the best theme As the World Turns had. I really liked the Piano they used during the 30 minute bumper.

And the theme used after this was my second favorite. They can still use that theme today!

  • @coolwafferman I loved those bumpers, too, particularly the second, more mellow one played just as part two would begin.

  • Not very 80s at all. At least the next one was a stunning improvement, unlike the changes of recent years.

  • It was really only in use for one year in the 80's, it was replaced in Feb. 1981. This opening was used 1967-1981...

  • It was November of 1981.

  • You're right, my bad.

  • Not very 80s at all. At least the next one was a stunning improvement, unlike the changes of recent years.

Show us that opening from 1981-93 with the first version.

  • Who the hell voted negative on Jay's comment? He was just requoting what Oakdalian said...

  • Do you have any videos of the computerized as the world turns openings/bumpers/closings featuring the theme "the world turns on and on" from the 1980's? Maybe even with the orchestral remix from the mid-late 80's?

  • Also, there are too many pretty people on soaps, and in real life we all know all kinds of persons--good looking and not so, young, middle-aged and older.

It seems on soaps that older characters are used only sporadically to offer advice to a younger character. Even younger viewers like to watch older characters, reminds them of their grandparenst. And a good villain is always fun to watch!

  • The soaps have to pay more heed to their long-standing families too, the "Bauers" of "Guiding Light," the "Hughes'" of "As The World Turns," etc.

  • Amazing How Much Soaps Have Changed.

  • And definitely not for the better!

  • My prediction--unless they return to their roots, with better storylines of less redundancy & cookie-cutter themes, hiring actors & actresses who may actually act and are not cast solely on the basis of an Abercrobie & Fitch/Victoria's Secret resume, incorporating characters across a wider spectrum of age groups, the soap opera as a genre of daytime programming will be gone from broadcast television by the next decade.

  • Excuse my error, that was supposed to read "Abercrombie & Fitch," but hopefully you get my point.
