I am not taking any side but after doing some research, Moustafa Zayed is much more accurate than Robert Spencer. You must do some research before you start spewing stuff. Other verses? e.g.: 9:23 says a muslim cant be friend of a unbeliever parent/brother

Both sides quoted Quran and Hadith. I believe Islamic tradition has many contradictions like any other tradition in the world. It all depends on the reader and his/ her interpretation. A good person will quote something to support his/her goodness, a bad guy will quote another to justify his/her evil. Any ideological text (even Plato's republic) can be used in the same effect.

Surprisingly Quran admits the same fact. I don't believe that a good person will turn bad because of reading the Quran. A criminal can find justification in any religious or non religious text to inflict harm. The extreme Marxist movements in the last century staged many terrorist acts for instance.

But holy books are dangerous in democracies because it allows Church/Mosque whatsoever to interfere in people's affairs. The solution here is separation of Church and state and to keep faith as a personal relationship with God instead of being a social system.

Spencer's problem is he cites the bad history of Islam, but he neglects many positive issues stated by Zayed. In comparison to the standards of the 7th century in a society lacking education, literacy and civilization, I believe Muhammad did pretty well and he was far very tolerant for the culture he lived in.
