  • Going carnivorous is a big sacrifice. Often you feel left out eating with family and friends, and you do give up something culturally; but it has been completely worth it for me. My health has completely turned around. I wore contacts from 16-26 and now no longer need them. I actually look younger than I did 4 years ago. My skin is totally clear, and I have more energy than I ever did before. I'm not trying to convert anybody: this diet isn't easy. If you have no access to wild game, forget it.

  • A couple years ago I ate vegatable matter at a Thanksgiving dinner with extended family (trying to be polite) and found that my body could no longer handle it. I became intensely ill after eating dressing and raw green salad. Didn't make any sense to me until I realized that dogs and cats eat grass to throw up, and I was having exactly the same reaction.

  • Easiest way to go zero carb, is to go zero plant matter and zero dairy. That's right, I'm a carnovore. Believe it or not, there are a few of us out there. I gave up plants and dairy almost 4 years ago and it's worked out great for me. After about 4 months your body adapts to it and you no longer live in ketosis or crave carbs. I'm also a type 2 diebetic and my blood sugar sits around 80 around the clock. I'm also around 5% body fat and the wrinkles and gray hair I had at 26 are now gone at 30.

  • Atkins doesn't go far enough. zero Carb is the only way to go. it is not natural for humans to eat vegetables. the fibre you get from vegetables is very hard on your digestive system and is not natural. of course this is just my opinion. I am very impressed with the success you have had on Atkins, but for Carb sensitive individuals like myself it just doesn't go far enough.

  • Do NOT insult zero carbs!!! Eat zero carbs and supplements nearly everyday and low carbs on the other days!!!

  • @zoepneuma I prefer to have a diet that I can eat without resorting to supplements and essentially eat the same way (same type of foods each day). I achieved better long term success that way, but if you can live the other way, go for it. Like I said, the severe metabolically resistant people may need to do that, but most however should not have to.

  • Hi

can I eat for the scond week Flax seed or make bread with it ,also I like to ask i am eating all this oill think like butter cheese I dont get colstrol please let me know

  • @manhaljeorje Check out my low carb flax bread recipe I have posted here. It is induction friendly. For cholesterol info, check out my cholesterol video I have posted here. The short answer is dietary cholesterol has little to do with cholesterol in one's blood.

  • i ate yesturday 4 big chillies filled with cheese and covered with egg on the outside, this is a mexican dish could this kick me off from ketosis because i had all ready ate my 20 carbs that i needed

  • thanks for such a quick reply.

I've been considering testing the waters on my son's birthday next week to see if my body could handle a planned off meal, but I'm already feeling worried before it even approches. I guess I should go with my insticnt.

I wish I knew a recipe for low carb strawberry cheesecake cause I'd love a slice of that right about now lol

  • how much weight did you lose weekly on average?

I'm only losing 1 lb to 1/2 lbs every week and I've got 160 lbs to lose and it's making me upset.

I work out a lot at the gym, but have beeb slacking the past week because of this.

  • @trinny1102 I lost on average a little more than 4 pounds a week. That was me. Weight loss is different for everyone.

I can understand the frustration, but you are still losing. The weight is still coming off, and while it might not be as fast in week 6 or 7 as week one the body is still adjusting. Take a different look at this -- where do you want to be 3 weeks from now or three weeks from now what do you wish you had done today?

That was what kept me going on my discouraging weeks.

  • @bowulf thanks that's good advice as I'd really regret 3 weeks from now if I gave up.

I just rejoined atkinsdietbuletinboard today, I've forgotten all about that site, I joined it as Blizette in 2004.

  • @bowulf I've been heavily debting whether or not to have one bad meal on thanksgiving and my son's birthday, I would never ever give up this way of eating, I love it, but thanksgiving without tiny scoop of stuffing or gravy is mentally bothering me even though it's over a month away.

  • @trinny1102 Ok, here is where I differ from many. I might over-indulge or care less about stopping when hunger is over on those days or eat too much of the low carb treats, but I don't eat the mashed potatoes or pecan pie. That's the line I have drawn for myself.

If you want or *can* take a planned off diet day and then go back the next day, then do that. I know someone personally who has said the same thing and that one day becomes 4-5 months routinely.

The first way works for me.

  • @bowulf I haven't cheated at all, not once in the past 5 weeks I've been dedicated to this WOE, Did you ever once let yourself slip on thanksgiving or anything?

I have very strong self control in this WOE, I had no cravings at all on induction the first week, so I am strong, but I don't want to make any mistakes either.

  • @trinny1102 I think only you can know yourself what way works out best for you. For me, I would rather take too much of the low carb treat -- 2nd or 3rd piece in a day of low carb cheesecake than simply eating anything and everything. The first way has a bit of guilt with having to work out, etc., but the second way in my head would be the equivalent of worm in an apple. That's just my mentality with special days.

Others like Jimmy Moore take a different approach. Know oneself is best advice.

  • @bowulf sorry for the mega long post and I hope some didn't post twice, my PC is being weird

  • 1 piece of meat? is he on crack

  • @hellasking69 I hear you. In rehearing the original comment, I am now skeptical that he was actually doing what he described because I doubt anyone could actually live on just that (one piece of meat) and still have the energy to post the comment.

  • What energy drink did you speak of in you youtube video?

  • @jcook287 XS Energy Drink

  • You are fantastic you know! :) I am going through all your videos!

  • Ditto to what GTBonds said

  • Please don't pay attention to negative comments such as those that have been posted by some of your subscribers. Your videos are very appreciated by those of us who are truly interested in the low carb lifestyle. I find your videos very useful and relevant. Please continue giving those of us who need it your guidance.

  • Thank you. Your kind words are much appreciated, and it is good to know others find these videos still of use.

  • you need to work on your speaking skills. That's all I could think about when you were talking, the information was irrelevant. You should have addressed the person you were talking about in your video more too if you were going to use them as an example, let them know to eat frequently throughout the day to prohibit an increased rate of metabolism.

  • I addressed their question in the private message.. You tell me you are only eating an egg or a piece beef jerky a day, I am going to say you should be following the rules of the diet. It's obvious that they needed to go back to the book and reread it, and rather than retyping the book, having them actually read it might help.

I however used their question as a take off for a video.

  • I think your mindset is quite a shame to be honest. I'm sure many people have the same problem. They think they can just eat once a day in order to lose weight. Yeah, you could have addressed the problem through this youtube video. Could help many many people in a similar situation. Why bother making videos if your gonna just tell people to "read a book". I don't get it.

  • Sorry next time I will put it in terms you understand or relate it to SF4 characters...

  • As for my speaking skills, you got what you paid for it. If it doesn't resonate with you, find someone else to watch.

  • Comment removed

  • and I didn't pay for your help thank god. Your speeches wouldn't resonate in the grand canyon.

  • I admit I don't make as high quality videos as your video of some pre-workout powder that cuts off your head and as you mumble your way through Jack3d powder. Or similarly of your Street Fighter 4 prowess. Good luck with that...

  • i've been on an Atkins/Paleo diet for 3 years now and i cant get fat despite eating 3-4000 kcals daily. im a protein type though..

  • Yep, without the insulin pathway, dietary fat has nowhere to go...

  • I eat a lot!

I can eat about 1lb of food per meal, and still lose weight by keeping the carbs down.

  • I'm a vegetarian 2 bad I couldn't do this diet.

  • There are certainly vegetarians who do Atkins. Check out my good friend ShrinkingTonyG for an example or watch the video I posted on this topic.

  • Well, what about breastfeeding moms.. is this safe for them and baby?

  • It depends upon what you mean by "this diet." The diet has 4 phases and while you might not want to do Induction or ketogenic level carbs, you can certainly do OWL and Maintenance phases of the diets while doing low carb. Ketones do get transferred in the breast milk, and while a natural part of the body, it may cause indigestion.

That said, there is no dietary requirement for refined flour or sugar while breastfeeding, so while you may not be eating 20g or less, you can still eat healthy.

  • @Nickspizzaparty

Vegetarian or vegan? If you're a vegetarian you can eat eggs, have heavy cream(To make low/no-carb pies), and all the lettuce you can eat. You can obviously add in various other veggies per day since you get 20carbs. (20 carbs is a lot more than you think when it comes to veggies.)

  • Hey, im on the akins diet & ive been on for about 4 days ive list 13 lbs already. But im not eating a whole lot. I eat like a piece of meat a day, or 1 piece of beef jerky a day or an egg a day, & thats all im eating. I drank alot of water. Do you think thats it? Will be OK? Eeeh, because i really need to loose alot of weight.

  • That does not appear to be enough for anybody over 50 pounds. You will eventually tire of the diet or get really fatigued. The Atkins diet is not eat only protein and fat diet -- you should eat at least 2 cups of salad veggies (mushrooms, peppers, lettuce, etc.) per day. Beef jerky is also often full of added sugars.

  • ... sorry should have said, I have hyperinsulinaemia.

  • Thanks for all the replies everywhere Kent. Still cannot work out 8 fluid ounces of lettuce though :--(

I have been checking out that Zeroing website you told me about. I have been logged on to it for about 22 hours now, reading all the articles. Have not even started on the forum! So thank you for that, too!

  • Did you not see the metric conversion for the conversion of the cups measurement. Alternatively you can search what each individual space measurement of a vegetables equates to in grams.

1 cup of romaine lettuce is 56 grams and

1 cup of asparagus (canned and drained) is 180 grams

1 cup of green beans (snap) boiled is 125 grams

I prefer the space or volume measurement (cups or mls) as each salad vegetable is the same. It is simply how much space does it occupies.

  • What is a cup? Tin ylittle coffee cup? Teacup that goes with a saucer? A mug?

  • Cup as in imperial unit of measurement, aka 8 fluid oz, aka 237 milliliters.

  • I'm a body builder i have big arms, but i have big belly. I tried to eat little bit of food and low carb food. I'm not sure what i can eat to reduce my stomach fat? Can you help? i eat white rice everyday and that's probaly bad but it's my traditional food. Do you have any idea?

  • Stomach fat can typically be addressed through cardio and eating right. Low carb eating will certainly preserve your existing muscle mass while losing weight unlike low fat or low Cal diets. The rice certainly contributes to the insulin response which is why you are storing that excess carbs as fat.

It really depends on how drastic of a change you want to make. If you want to gradually lose the weight, just work at reducing the number of whites in your diet, sugars, rice (google faux rice).

  • thanks bowulf i love your videos and its realy nice of you to help people on the atkins diet like myself. here in the uk all they beleve in is the low calories diet approach. 1st thing my doctor said to me was dont try low carbs diet, after reading dr atkins book i am a fan and not only that i think he as got it right in so many ways, here in the uk they dont know wot they are talking about. i would love to talk to people about the atkins diet and make friends with

  • There are good doctors out there that want to learn for themselves, but a tremendous number who simply can't be bothered to unlearn what myths they've accumulated. The point is we need to figure out what truly does work and keep us healthy.

  • 1 it says you can eat bacon which i have but it says in the book you carnt eat it if it as (nitrares) 2 it says watch your carbs which i done to the book but may have had more of 1 thing like cheese.i buy a block of mild cheese at 0.1 gram of carbs and i have half a block with my meals, 3 it says you can eat till your not hungry which i have done to the book i make sure i have plenty of fish eggs and meat and i use the cheese to melt into my meals. so its not to dry to eat.

  • I am not a big believer of the nitrate argument.

You are limited to 3 to 4 oz per day during Induction. However after the first 14 days you can start on the OWL in which you add more things back into your diet. Cheese can cause stalls in some people, so the point is to start with this amount. You can then determine if you can add more safely.

  • hi there kent i am new to the atkins diet. i am on my 2nd week of induction now but i dont think i did the 1st week of induction by the book. as i have only just bought the book today and have been reading it and there is a cupple of things i like to pick up with you if this is ok with you. i will send you the 2nd part to this as i could not fit it all on

  • hi bowulf how do i count carbs that say zero or trace on the food labels

  • For the trace or zero (that include sugar) ones, Dr. A said just count it as one (like cheese) per serving since it could be .01 or .99, and the mfg is not required to list it.

  • Atkins Advantige Bars (160 KL each) -net 4 carbs ON THE BOX IT SAYS that THEY Are good for ALL phases, WILL THEY HELP ME TO GET TO INDUCTION PHASE (i know i can only have 5 bars a day to stay within allowed 20 carbs) OR IS THIS A WRONG WAY TO GO ABOUT IT ? DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ??

  • They do some mojo to get to that 4g by discounting glycerin and some sugar alcohols in some products. I am not a big believer in eating bars at all, especially not on Induction. On Induction, your 20g should come almost strictly from the 3 cups of vegetables you eat (and minimal amounts from eggs and cheese). Eating bars is not real food and not providing real nutrition.

  • i dont get this 3 cups of veggie thing..3 cups of onions would be way more carbs than 3 cups of cauliflower for example..and how much is a cup equal to in the uk ..thank you

  • Check out an Induction Acceptable Food list which vegetables are categorized "salad veggies" and which are categorized under "other veggies." You are allowed 3 cups per day of salad veggies -OR- 2 cups per day of salad veggies and 1 cup of other veggies. Onions are listed as an other veggie.

  • Man, if you don't take a fiber supplement your colon is gonna be narrower than Michael Jackson's nostril.

  • I have never had that problem in 4 years. There should be enough fiber in veggies you eat that it shouldn't be a problem. The zero carber's may indeed need them, but with enough water, I am good to go.

  • lol

  • 13 pounds in 4 days!!!!!!!!!! HOLY FUCKING SHIT!

  • I'm sorry. I am watchng all of your videos here. I think you are amazing.. and my new secret video mentor too! lol (fyi right?) anyway... I have to ask. Is that a mini-lop rabbit in the background? I have two rabbits. Any chance of a rabbit video? They are the kewlest!

  • Thanks for watching my videos and commenting. We have two rabbits a lop eared (not a mini) named Max or Flopsy depending on the child, and Spot a Dutch rabbit, whose been under the weather. Do you let your rabbits roam the house?

  • Can you tell me about sugar alcohols in food

  • I talk about sugar alcohols quite a bit in my net carb video that's posted here. The short answer is that I don't like them due to them still metabolizing as sugar (not equal amounts) and the worse ones cause severe GI issues.

  • aloha ken i think your videos are great, the facts plus you eliminate questions. ketones are broken down fats used as fuel so why does the ketone strips turn different colors? is it an indication of how much ketone i used, the darker the more ketones? or is it an indication of the exercise i did. what is the ketone and strips story? mahalo

  • Certainly as you burn more ketones, the strips will turn a darker color. However, the most common reason for darker strips is dehydration or not drinking enough water. This is why overnight in the morning your strips will be usually the darkest of the day.

Bear in mind the ketone strips only test for the presence of one ketone, and are only a so-so or good indicator of ketosis as false negatives are common. If you are eating under 50g of carbs per day for 14 days straight, you are in ketosis.

  • Oops that was supposed to be 20g.

  • aloha ken thanks for the ketone thing, but i am on induction and the strips read middle to low, but my blood sugar readings are about 130, so i know i am in ketosis but my blood sugars are alittle high where is the sugar coming from? are my ketones reading as sugars on my blood meter?

    mahalo

  • Two sources - the stored glycogen in your muscles and liver and any excess protein may be converted to glucose as well through gluconeogenesis.

  • Your videos are a public service and are just fine; in fact 5 stars. (I like Jimmy Moore okay, but I prefer your style.) Thanks!

  • I really appreciate the validation, colliefur, and like I said, I count all my viewers as friends. If I can help a viewer, I am willing to do it.

  • Ken, I appreciate your attempt to educate, but your vids are extraordinarily hard to watch. The edits, and the dry delivery of information, either from pre-written scripts, or otherwise is a struggle to watch. I tried watching one of your older vids, and now this more recent one, and nothing has really changed. Practice your speech, and eliminate the cuts, or if you do have cuts, don't have your voice be cutoff, it's way too disruptive.

  • First, I appreciate the comments, but at some point, I have to respectfully say this is all that I have got. If you would rather see the uncut stumbles through the material, I would dare bet most would see that as worse. I don't claim to be be exceedingly smooth in front of the camera. I do my best and believe that information is more important than the delivery. If you want smooth and entertainment value while being educated, Jimmy Moore is your man.

  • Frankly, I appreciate your delivery Ken. You are not a professional, you are speaking to us as a "friend", trying to help us out. Your information far surpasses your delivery that may put off some people. I find it refreshing. Keep on truckin'!

  • Thanks for the comments. I find it amazing to think 1200 people view my videos given my admitted lack of polish or smoothness, but like you said, I am talking to the viewer hopefully as a friend not as a student. As people keep watching, I appreciate each and every one.

  • HERE, HERE!! U'r very much appreciated Ken! Much congrats on ur success and thanks for taking the time to give info and answering questions!! Thank you.

  • i like ur vids! they are so helpful and encouraging.

  • Thanks for your words of appreciation!

  • bowulf what should I eat for brakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

  • bowulf, What shold the menu be for breakfast, lunch, abd dinner has a example. Thanks.

  • Really the menu vary so much based upon taste, so the menu's I provide are just what sounds good to me not necessarily the only possible or advisable menu.

    Breakfast:

Chicken Fajita Salad with ranch, 1 TBS sour cream, and 1/4 cup salsa

    Lunch:

Cheeseburger with lettuce wrap, and lettuce salad with ceasar dressing

    Dinner:

Sausage, .5 cup Onion, 1 cup Pepper Stir Fry

This is just one example -- obviously you could have an omelet for breakfast, or broccoli salad and steak instead of dinner.

  • My wife on the other hand has green beans and natural hot dogs quite often for dinner. I also have Buffalo Wings or Fried Chicken (breaded with parmesan cheese or pork rinds) quite often as well. I also eat a lot of Broccoli and Cauliflower (1 cup max per day). So there are lots of options.

  • Great video! I just wanted to toss a topic out there. Finding your CCLL? I keep trying but I eat such a variety and with monthly fluctuation that I get scared and back off each time. Sometimes it's fear of gaining weight or bloat and sometimes I just feel too stuffed after 45 net carbs to eat more. I want to find it before I lose a lot more but the books descriptions are kind of fuzzy. HELP!

  • That is completely alright. That bloated feeling is your body telling you messages. You don't have to eat to your CCLL, and truth be told I eat below it most days. As much as my weight fluctuated, I could never nail down a number, but I came to realize I felt best under about 65-75g per day. Most times, I can't eat enough good or even starchy (like Corn in season) veggies to reach those levels.

  • My best recommendation would be to exchange one salad a day for a cup of corn, cup of cooked carrots or peas, or half a baked potato (caution really high GI). Each of those would add about 30g of Carbs. Do that for a week while keeping everything else the same. Track if you gain weight and what your total carb counts each day were.

From there you can quickly judge if you can tolerate a higher carb count. If you see a bounce, you know you found your CCLL.

  • Ueah, it's hard with the food allergies. I should probably wait till I hit those rungs *sighs* If I get within a few pounds of goal without finding my CCLL will it become a huge problem for maintenance?

  • Not in my case, since I really haven't altered my diet at maintenance much from my diet during OWL. I still eat a healthy 20-50g per day depending on the vegetables. On occassion it might be a little higher due to wanting something like SF Dessert like cheesecake or ice cream with sugar alcohols, but those are unique treats.

If the weight bounces during maintenance, just re-evaluate what you've eaten recently or start actively tracking again. Normally that alone will correct the problem.

  • But just as in Induction, you could eat 24 oz Porterhouse every day. That doesn't necessarily mean you should or that your body wants it. Listen to how hungry you are and WHAT you are hungry for. If it's not corn or peas or high starch, then don't feel compelled to eat it, but you have the freedom.

Conversely if you suddenly get cravings for junk carbs, bear that in mind too. The diet is full of more decisions on OWL, but Induction should have prepped for them and how to handle it.

  • Bowulf... you are THE MAN! hahah, but seriously, you're so helpful and encouraging! It reminds me that where there is a will, there is a way. I also found the recipe videos helpful, and would LOVE to hear some more induction friendly recipes for those of us who plan to stay on induction for a longer time to reach our goals. Thanks again for all the videos!

  • Not a problem... I just want to thank every one for watching and still finding me interesting enough to comment. :-)

  • what is in the cage against the wall behind you?

  • I have two rabbits behind me in cages. You may also see an American Eskimo dog running around from time to time as well.

  • American eskimos are so beautiful!

  • I agree and still wonder why she was ever at the pound in the first place. She's our second Eskie -- the first one was the source of my online name (Bo).

  • Hello Kent, I find your videos extremely helpful. I have a question I hope you can help me with. I have several friends on the atkins diet. and have been for several months with incredible result. When they had a GTT done after being on the diet for four months their sugar was at 105 a little higher by 10 points, then before they started the diet. Any thoughts. Their docs were not worried, we were just puzzled.

  • The only thing I could point to is after being on a stictly low carb diet for that long, and then being encouraged or compelled to high doses of sugar that the body was not able to metabolize the sugar as quickly as it once had. This said I have never once had a GTT or even really investigated this aspect. So my apologies, but you may have to seek a better expert for this one. 105 is still well within healthy range for the OGTT.

  • Ive do no carbs for 3 days every month or two, helps me when i stall or gain once a month... from female "issues"..anywhos, even on no carb its still important to eat every two hours, and get plenty of good fats... our bodies arent meant to go without anything COMPLETELY.

  • That's why I find the vegans and vegetarians so funny. They want to write off a whole food group completely, which is a whole lot more restrictive than I ever was. About the only thing I have written off forever is fungii (mushrooms) much to the consternation of my wife.

But mine is over taste not misplaced ethical beliefs or bad science.

  • Hey there, I am a new subscriber, and I am not so much doing the atkins diet but I am doing a low cal and low carb diet (carb conscious) I just wanted to say thanks for doing videos like these are very helpful, I especially like the cooking ones :) You should make more of those :)

  • Thanks for the subscription - I saw you had subscribed today.

I will hopefully have a great recipe video coming up as soon as I get more cauliflower in the house. It is my favorite, I am sick and I want something easy for my stomach recipe. I am always happy to take requests.

  • People really need to read Dr. Atkins book(s)

  • yeah your right they need to read and not assume.

  • Yeah, one has to eat nothing but meat to be no carb, just about. Egg and cream have miniscule amounts of carbs that add up the more one eats. I know of a lot of guys on the internet that attempt a no carb diet but I personally eat plenty of low starch vegetables and berries. But I still attempt to restrict my carbs as much as possible. The Eskimoes lived long periods eating nothing but raw and cooked fish(basically a no carb diet) and experienced excellent health.

  • I agree. I of course restrict mine to reasonable amount (20-40 depending on which vegetables I eat that day), but write off all phyto-nutrients except those that are in the meat you eat seems destined to problems. Eskimos choice of foods was a little closer to nature food chain than our pigs or beef. Plus I'd rather eat my minerals and vitamins as much rather than pop them.

  • BTW - during the making of this video, I am embarrassed to say how many takes I had to do to say the word "hyperinsulinemia." :-)

  • I agree! OMG thats a horrible way for that person to be eating. That's crazy! Glad you posted and educated that person on the eating scale. Nice work!

  • Exactly... Sure you might lose a LOT of weight, but think what your body would like afterwords. It would not be pretty. That's why I keep re-enforcing eat like you are going to for the rest of your life while losing weight. If you aren't learning those lessons on the way down, you can only expect to learn it on the way back up.
