As She started it all with Trance Music (I feel Love '77 - Giorgio Moroder) She was influenced by Euro Disco, Soul, Rock, New Wave,Pop,etc. There was the beginning of Techno music (early 90's) and at the same time, She sang with many other flavors as R&B and Inspirational on her 'Mistaken Identiy' album. Very well done and Professional. note: there were two original versions of "Work that Magic" they are Super ! (version for UK and the other one for USA)
First time I have seen this. Great LIVE performance from the Queen of Disco Donna Summer! Fantastic vocals. One of her most underrated songs. Thank you for posting.
This isn't live. It's the single version that was released to radio. The vocals were different on the single than on the "Mistaken Identity" CD. I did love this version better.
While it is probably not the strongest song Donna Summer has ever produced, it should have fared better. Maybe it was just underpromoted? But then there were so many new influences and trends during that time. I think acts and artist with little or no history were faring better in the early 90ies: like SoulIISoul, CnC Music Factory, Hip Hop and New JAck Swing and all that other Euro Dancefloor stuff. Donna got pissed off and felt she was no longer trendy enough....
Dancers were great. They remind me of Madonna's Express Yourself video back in the days where men retain one of their sexiest atributes: hairy armpits. Now men fel and look like shaved ladies ! What a waste of testosterone :(
Poor Donna, she looks as though she hates every part of this, sounds as though she's singing over some pre-recorded vocals. I like the song, but the dancers are awful.
I love this song, but Donna Summer hated it. She hated the whole album apparently. You can see how p*ssed off she looks lip synching to this. Pity as it's a really great album...
One of my very favorite songs from the nineteen nineties. A great song that still outshines some of today's best. Great memories indeed!!! I wonder if we could walk down memory lane with more of this type of music.Heaven on earth! Go Donna Summer!
the song was ok for the time i guess. her vocals are what always shine. the dancers look like some guys they picked up at a gay dance club. donna looked like she didn't want any part of it.
I can only speculate that with this being the follow-up to the multi-million selling, widely acclaimed "Another Place and Time" that she was unhappy with the total package and the lack of attention and effort given by the Atlantic Records team.
At the time of MI's release, I was friends with the president of Donna's fan club and he asked if I would speak on behalf of the dance community. I received a letter from Donna's attorneys shortly thereafter asking my opinion of the single(Work That Magic). The remix was abysmal and lacked any effort whatsoever, being pretty much a straight forward extension of the lp track with no breaks. See next post...
um about the SAW comment exploting her - if thats true why has she over the years continud to work with Pete Waterman? SAW had nothing to do with mistaken identity
Don't forget, also at the time that this CD (Which, I'm sorry, sounds nothing like SAW) was released she was also coping with the death of one of her sisters. That is why no video was shot for the lead-off track (When Love Cries) which, at least back then, was crucial to a new release. That combined with poor marketing killed the CD. If you really listen to the whole thing, it really is one of her best.
I like that sexy sound u make DoNNa....stay foreveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerr haaaaaaa or something like this u're sexy girl!!! Good 4 that DoNNa !!!!!!!!
The fear in Donna's eyes at the start when it looks like the mic is going to fail like the london palladium show from 87. That aside she looks ill at ease here, not sure if it's the dancers or something else. Despite that their is no doubting her amazing voice.
So this LP wasn't a PWL record, but had the same cheesy marketing and that's what you see on Donna's face. To top it all off the LP cover show's her as a blond with lighter eye color contacts...
Not putting the song down at all....I have the 12" single and love it. I wish they treated Donna a bit better.
She was a bit upset being exploited a few years before by Britain's PWL records music machine. they did not give her any artistic influence. Stock/Aiten/Waterman wrote all the songs, did all the music production, and marketing. Her and many others had fallouts with PWL(Dead or Alive, Rick Astley, Bananarama, Kylie Minogue..)
well no promotion from atlantic records, releasing when love cries (the worse song on there) a song that was a few years too early. I cant believe donna allowed those stupid dancers in her face.
"Mistaken Identity" is my favorite Donna album, and this is my favorite song from it. Definitely didn't get the attention that it deserved.
On a slightly funny note...does anyone else notice that Donna seems a little like "it's finally over" when the song ends? Maybe it was the cheesy male dancers. :)
I don't know i also thought that work that magic was the 2nd single to be lifted off MI and the album was performing dismally so maybe she's thinking "It's finally over... my career" Hope she didn't!

I sense she wasn't comfortable with that performance. She probably didn't like the bare-chested fellas.

I think Donna was trying to promote this single, and the dancers were really not that bad.

Can we say awkward? Great vocals, but the dancers were naff, even for 1991!
