The confederate flag doesn't symbolize any of those things to anyone who owns or displays one (except the kkk, who coopted the symbolism, unfortunately). However, there are two points on which you are in error: 1) the secession was started over whether or not a new state entering the union could let their citizens own slaves, and 2) at its heart, the confederate flag only symbolizes two things: southern pride and secession.
