Urmana was a stunning mezzo and I can understand her desire to want to be a soprano but after a disastrous Aida at the Met a few days ago I hope that she can correct whatever is wrong and ontintue to give the pleasure that she id initially.
It is said that she is a wonderful personality, but this singing is unfinished, strident and entirely lacking any trace of nuance or musical sensitivity.
She just has a large voice: another Marton, Guleghina, or Zajick.
Does anyone listen to ELIZABETH RETHBERG, considered to be the greatest soprano of the era by no less than Toscanini. The voice was always BRILLIANT. Hooty, covered, voices are not able to encompass the Art of Singing
The best Tosca, Aida , Leonora di Vargas, Elisabetta di Valois,Maddalena di Coigny, ,Gioconda, Isolde,Kundry,Amelia, Ariadne, Norma,Santuzza,Sieglinde,Wally... Meraviglia delle meraviglie... Urmana Great
Great voice! But i must admit that I've been more impressed with other versions like Callas' or Leontyne's. But Urmana is great and had a very pleasant vocal tone. What I can't understand is why vocal coachs still are teaching wrong. Apparently the brightness is now a priority instead of vocal power. I really miss a true wagnerian soprano...
Beautiful voice, but very boring actress and no stage charisma. Seen Tosca at ROH, was very average. Probably has got good agents as there are a lot more charming performers around
I'm watching the Met broadcast on PBS of Aida now. Really uninteresting, if not boring, acting. Have you heard Adina Aaron? I went to school with her 15 years ago, fabulous then, even more fabulous now (see clips of her in a 2007 production of Aida here on YouTube) - fantastic acting, musicianship, and singing. Let me know what you think.
this aria sounds really strange in this abused version, but Its definitely the conductor's fault! Urmana is surely fascinating and she could have sung that in piano, because she can dothat with Aida and Aida is certainly higher than Tosca!

instead of the insight approach, this is an honest, direct, take-no-prisoners interpretation. With such a gorgeous voice, I'll buy that!

Biggish sound and competent, but quite forgettable. I'm so glad I didn't pay $160 to sit 25 rows back when she sang this at the Los Angeles Opera.

"good" agents have destroyed opera by doing exactly the opposite of what you suggest! Namely, they have flooded opera with "charming" little nothings.
I wonder how come agents allowed this voice to have a career although she is not "charming"... Apparently there was too much voice to ignore.
PS
I think she does radiate much more than being "charming"...

A mi tampoco, cuando la ví en Madrid en Cavalleria, no terminó de convercerme. Bueno, hoy en dia es díficil encontrar voces como las de antes!
