Global warming is an interesting theory, NOT FACT. Example: Carbon dioxide HAS increased in the past century due to fossil fuels and the avg. global temp has increased 0.8 degrees in the same period. HOWEVER most of that temp increase came BEFORE 1940. Most new carbon dioxide was added AFTER 1960. I'm just suspicious of a failed politicion charging $100K for a speach about armageddon.

It is indeed a theory, as is gravity. There are very few things in science considered facts: Newton's Law, 1st and 2nd laws of thermodynamics, etc. A short list. Global warming is considered a "strong" theory: it has held up to multiple lines of observational evidence.......not just the observed temperature record but additional independent lines of evidence.

The "bump" in the global mean temperature record is well-explained by the known cooling from sulfate aerosols. Models show this quite well.

MANY things in science are considered fact. Gravity IS a fact and is demonstratable. Lets assume that global warming is a 'strong' theory. It is not YET demonstrable. A number of scientists agree that there is not enough data, AT THIS TIME, to support the theory that man is responsable for the planet warming. The planet has warmed AND cooled many times without any help from man. This is a fact.

Sorry, but in scientific parlance, gravity is a theory (see any introductory physics textbook). My point is that nobody would question this theory because it is as close to scientific fact as one gets without actually being one. GW is indeed not to the level of gravity, but it is supported by a considerable amount of theoretical foundation and observational data. The scientific community that actually engages in climate science overwhelmingly supports the IPCC statements on climate change.

I am merely trying to point out that much of what we know is scientifically considered theory.....some are just more developed than others. GW is not as developed or supported as gravity but that does not mean it is a random whim either. It has a foundation and supporting evidence.

I would also want uncertainty of all aspects included. This has been attempted in many quarters though admittedly there aren't clear answers. My simple thought: take small but targeted steps that mitigate emissions but don't have a net negative on the economy.

I think the observational evidence and theoretical underpinnings have moved GW theory to a "strong" theory. Given the potential impacts suggested by the research community, one has to weigh these against the price of doing something.

Linkage was intended because GW has moved rather rapidly from theory to predictions of disaster. As a result solutions have been proposed without regard to cost. An example is the Kyoto Treaty/protocol. In my opinion if this had been ratified it would have been an economic disaster for the U.S. While it was defeated soundly (95-0) it is stll considered a viable option.

I was very happy that Gore received the Nobel Peace Prize. Over the past few years, he has been spreading awareness about global warming, which is not a hoax, there is scientific evidence.
