I'm not gonna lie, that sucked, for one, they cut every phrase, two, there is no intonation what so ever. When playing a march or any music for that matter, no matter if you have the melody or not, you need to play with good sound, These guys just blasted the fk out of everything when they got to the melodies. Horrible sound overall from this piece, probably made Filmore roll over in his grave. I go to a 2A high school, my band can play this piece better than these guys. Great song, bad players.
I don't care how fast or slow they play it because fast doesn't mean good and slow doesn't mean bad. But they announcer needs to take public speaking lessons and I have never heard that trombone part and also I know there is more than one part as well. Maybe I'm wrong but they added to the trombone part. PLAT WHATS ON THE MUSIC!!!
@krbrown...The band is playing Rolling Thunder by memory, on the football field, and marching as they play. You were probably sitting down with a music stand in front of you in a concert hall. There is a marked difference. I would love to see your band march and play Rolling Thunder at 180 mm. LOL
Come on FAMU, i expected u guys to play it faster than that. U gotta double tongue those notes to get'em out faster. I loved playin this in highschool. I played baritone in marching band and euphonium in concert. It can be done faster. Especially at the college level. Still a good performance tho
The point that was missed is that it is futile to place 30 trombones out front when the essence of the march requires all parts to be heard in harmonic tandem. I have followed FAMU more years then you have lived on this Earth. Hater I am not, music observer I am. It would have been more musically effective to keep the shape of the trombone with the trombone section embedded in the band. The slower tempo for this piece served no purpose but to provide assistance to the musically inept.
@aristocratify This is no easy march. At it's original tempo, it's a trombone player's worst nightmare. That said, I have to agree. It is too slow. As for the sound, it just goes to prove that A) trombones are the loudest instrument in the band, B) because of A, trombones should never be at the front and C) you shouldn't put microphones in front of trombones.
But then again, it is Henry Fillmore. Woodwinds played well. Would've liked to hear more horns. Were there any 2nd or 3rd trumpets?
To the hater....CLEARLY, the 100 was featuring the trombones. I didn't think that was so hard to figure out considering the big TROMBONE on the field. And I hope you aren't tryin to give the 100 a lecture on balance. Forreal, FAMU? Don't be mad b/c knowbody even cares @ what your band does enough to even watch their videos or comment on them. Famu has another video up featuring the Trumpets playin Saints and they made a big TRUMPET on the field for idiots just likeI you.
I've read all of the posted comments and there seems to be a consensus of two basic musical points; one, the trombones were misplaced thus making them appear to be out of balance with the rest of the band and two, the march was performed at a slow tempo. I would agree with both logical criticisms. Most march enthusiasts would agree that the Rolling Thunder March should always be played up-tempo. Finally, the trombone melody is a part of the whole and not the whole piece by itself. Balance!
God bless Prof. Bing - the March IS the heritage of our concert and brass bands and it has been too long neglected in this country.
I for one am so tired of HS & College bands trying to be Broadway show bands, rock bands, funk bands, - trying to be things they aren't and doing it rather poorly instead of being what they ARE.
People need to chill and stop being ignorant. It is not hard to figure out that the trombones are standing smack in front of the microphones. The conductor might have heard something different standing in front of the band, than the person recording who is closer to the speakers. Not a bad performance
oh my gosh.... the microphones are in the front... so are the trombones... common sense would tell you that ... for when the trombones move from the front then the trumpets become loud...
@Bobofwestoregonusa Sure, but it's not just melody and harmony here. It's melody and countermelody. I would've like to hear the countermelody a bit more.
I've heard this march played at various speeds so what you are saying is bullshit. It all depends on the conductor's preference. Bones were clean and beast. Love it.
this goes to show your ignorance. if you look at the original copied score you'll find the tempo marking is furioso. which proves my tempo of too slow. and if you think listening to that much bone is musical you must have no musicality in your life. come at me with some real shit just cus i dislike your band playing this march.
What you are not comprehending is marches may be composed a certain way but conductors tend to direct bands to play the march to their particular preference. The way it is performed and the way it was written are two totally different things. Does this make sense to you? BTW - I didn't go to FAMU.
It makes perfect sense. But what you don't understand there's a difference between interpretation and not even close to the characteristic style of the piece and i this case the march. Marches are not intended to be taken at conductors preference. This isn't a concert piece or a melodic piece. Do You understand?
Since you are only 19 years old (LOL!), I'm going to cut you some slack, son. Overseas, British and German conductors had us performing JP Sousa marches much different from the way they were composed. Much slower and more stately. And conductors love to put their little touches on Henry Fillmore marches.
This isn't really a piece you can do with marching band, especially one this big. the song needs to be a hell of a lot faster to be at the correct tempo and I saw drums but I didn't hear them...
the balance sucks sooo much! the brass over power completely. and the trumpets arent that great, im sure there are plenty of amazing players in the band but over doesnt sound too clean

Yeah !!! Spirited kick ass performance as it should be.
Those who criticize need to realize a few things:
1) the trombones are loud because they have the melody on this one.
2) they are closest to the mics as someone pointed out.
3) it's pretty difficult if not impossible to get good balance on a recording of a band this big spread out over a large field.
McVouty 1 year ago
