I don't like this...."I never knew that my skin was too black" !???.... "I never knew that my nose was to flat".....the way it's worded is a hidden message within a message .....this would make a kid hear something was wrong with being "black" and having a "flat nose"
Well, Ysaye Barnwell (the writer and a member of Sweet Honey in the Rock) was born in 1947; so she was in her teens before segregation ended. She's not saying 'actually too black/flat', but 'too black/flat according to the euro-centric ideals of beauty that permeated mid-20th century society in the USA.'
This song wasn't written explicitly for children. It's just a personal song she published. And someone later decided to broadcast it on Nick JR.
BEFOR YOU COMMENT SOMETHING RUDE TO ME, I POSTED WHATEVER CAME TO THE TOP OF MY HEAD! I DONT THINK ABOUT SOMTHING TO LONG, AND I DO RESPECT CULTURE(some person said i need to). DONT THINK IM DISSSING THE SONG BECAUSE I REALLY LIKE IT!! MY GOSH PEOPLE!!!!!! that is all :P
@tessera12 I think the point is that she didn't know that society deemed these things undesirable so she held contentment because no one told her otherwise. Also the black skin remark was meant as a quasi satarical remark because who is too say what is too black it is meant to be ironic .
if your clothes didnt fit,you would be able to feel the presure on your skin. if your skin was to black, you could see it on your arms, legs, stomach, etc...
This was my favorite song as a child... I use to sing it all the time and when it came on I would stop whatever I was doing just to watch this... Brings back wonderful memories...
wow this is definitely like the I love my hair muppet. We need a ton more beautiful things like this that show how beautiful black hair is and how just beautiful we all are as humans. My favorite line is, "The world outside was a magical place, I only knew love I never knew hate." Just beautiful.
The last time I heard this was when I was 4 years old in kindergarten, and I loved it =) I still do, i remembered it today and decided to try to find it on here... this is what the world needs, love and no hate =) The innocence of a child =)
i first heArd dis song at age 8 i was just waking up and it was on,i hadnt heard da song since but for some reason i always thought bout that song.im 15 now and been damn near obssesed with finding this song...thank god for youtube

1. You don't need a lot of pressure to feel something. Gentle summer breezes are weak and you still feel those.
2. If your skin is too back doesn't that mean it's more contrast making it easier to see?
Culture dude......respect it.

Goodiez83 1 year ago
they cut a verse... one of the most powerful, in my opinion.
I was intrigued by the cracks in the walls.
I tasted, with joy, the dust that would fall.
The noise in the hallway was music to me.
The trash and the rubbish just cushioned my feet.
And the beauty in everything
was in her eyes
