To this day I still put it in sound of the scratch in whenever I hear Bellboy.
And to think Rolling Stone ranked this album of amazing music at 'only' 266 (???) out of the 500 rock albums of all time, is just BS. The yanks didn't get it. The music is timeless, more relevant today than ever before.
@costaltabelluno Us yanks aren't all idiots. It's just that the stupidest among us are usually also the most vocal. The curse of Democracy: stupid people get to voice their opinions. This is one of my top three albums of all time, though. The first time I heard anything from it was when I was with my uncle. This song is one of the reasons Quadrophenia holds up better than Tommy -- the theme is really timeless -- that moment when you realize your idols are just people, and maybe not even that admirable -- growing up is painful, man! And Keith Moon just OWNS this thing--I never get tired of it!
i read the comments by mrDougiew, i can only assume that he is a wind-up merchant, but if he is genuine then i pity him, what a terrible world he has created to live in.............but anyway.......the who were moon equipped and that takes them out of this world.........................

I still dont see how this is keiths theme. This is ace talking when jimmy sees ace working as a bell boy. plus i thought tht each theme was a personality of jimmy and this song is mostly about ace. i see doctor jimmy as moons theme cuz it shos jimmy drinking and becoming a lunatic just like keiths personality
a great song anyway ,one of my favorites on the album
I can never listen to this without feeling sorry for Jimmy I mean here was a face that he idolised one that put himself across as something so big, you all remember the courtroom scene, right? Then he turns out to be just a slave really, poor Jimmy what an awful realisation.
the whole point of being a mod was you worked to pay for the lifestyle.sting summed it all up as the ace face.a lot of top mods wore leather coats and not parkas.the ace face had the clothes the flash scooter and could pull the birds; because he worked for a living and at the weekends let off steam.the real mods of the 80s were the football casuals that had the same work ethic as the original mods but ran riot at the weekends.jimmy in quadrophenia had lost the plot what a mod was all about .
Noone can write the rock opera like Pete Townsend. So much of his music is like classical with pauses and crescendos and subtlety and crashing chorus.
I've always been a bit confused by "bellboy". Was the bellboy who's talking one of Jimmy's personalities, or the ace face? I always figred it was Jimmy, but it would make more sense if it were the ace face
@bwc3821 the bell boy is ace face. The thing about it is supposed to be how much jimmy looked up to him, yet ace ends up being beaten into society "always running at someones heal"
@Epicsaursus makes sense, but then Moon's theme is for someone other than Jimmy? I always thought each member of the band was represented as a different personality within Jimmy.
@bwc3821 I know pete wrote the crazy part of doctor jimmy to represent moon, and the "is it me for a moment" part of the song as the more reserved and reflecting entwistle
@bwc3821 it was exactly that but it was the fact jimmy idolised the bell boy as he was the ace face but jimmys illusions where smashed whne he discovered the ace face was a bell boy and therefore not any more special than jimmy himself
@reksub10 I know what all you guys are saying, I just don't understand why Moon's theme would be for someone other than Jimmy. Each theme, I thought, was suppose to represent a different personality within Jimmy (hench Quadrophenia)
@bwc3821 yeah but remember this is an opera so moon is just singing the bell boy part ,the bell boy is not one of jimmiys personalities the personalities are "* A tough guy, a helpless dancer. (Roger Daltrey)
* A romantic, is it me for a moment? (John Entwistle)
* A bloody lunatic, (Keith Moon)
* A beggar, a hypocrite, love reign o'er me. (Pete Townshend" hope this helps
you nailed it desierto789 --at the same time Pete was paying homage to these people and this era, he was also framing it as a snapshot of teen angst, narcissism, & disillusionment. f'kn brilliant! Masterpiece!!
What I like about this song is not just the melody (which is awesome) but how is it that it captures perfectly how we often see our idolized heroes like what they really are: human. When he sings "Ain't you the guy who used to set the paces, running up in front of a hundred faces?"... well, I can feel Jimmy's dissapointment in everything he ever believed in. This album is awesome!
Quadrophenia truly sounded like a classic to me, even when it first came out. I can think of very few LPs that conjure up so many fantastic cinematic images in one's mind. No other album captures an era and teenage angst so well. If The Who had never made another album besides this one, they would be famous for it alone. It's truly the record where all of their talents magnificently come together: Vocals, drumming, b(ad)ass, beautiful compositions, amazing guitar textures, great story - WOW!!!
It gets real lonely in your mom's basement doesn't it? In fact, I'd suspect that lurking around Youtube is as exciting as your life gets. You get to act superior and put on an act that you are someone you are not. The depressing life of failure, inflatable dates, and missed opportunities is somehow lessened when you can sprout some Troll wood and pretend that you are the new Neil Pert. Puh Leez learn tolerance, go outside and get a job. Plus, tell your mom you will clean up your room.

Some rare vocals from Keith Moon on this track. Miss his playing and great drumming. Not many drummers today playing like Keith. A major contributor to the "WHO" and their overall sound.
@neilzep.. Gee what a surprise response. Here we have another no-nothing idiot with a comment that could only come from someone with a limited educated. He also seems to have a "Dick" fetish. Stop thinking about "dick" sonny...and go get a education, then get a life... Jr.!!!!
Hey jbar19..People make typo and spelling errors all the time here. The point is that Keith Moon was a great drummer which is what they were referring to. That idiot who says Keith had no talent is a moron!
He makes many comments about Keith like that, what's his problem. I think he is jealous of Keiths success.
if Keith had no talent,he wouldn't be in the WHO!! GET IT!!!
lapspd may have made a spelling or typo error, that happens here all the time. However his point is well made.
Keith Moon was an great drummer.
The comments from that moron "mrDougview1"
repeatedly says Keith had no talent, which is not just a opinion, he apparently has an axe to grind. It is a direct attack on his abilities as a drummer, and his band mates that didn't know any better, his countless fans and other drummers that love his playing.
The Who at one time ruled the rock n roll world ....Gosh they where great ..But all things pass.. But they will always be my number 1 band ...I LOVE them
say what you think about pete but the guy really knows how to play a guitar he's been one of my fav guitarist and the band has well. And not only that all there album are great from sellout to who are you some great songs of all time
Both were amazing bands, with wonderful personalities. Compare those two bands with bands of today? .....no comparison, they were awesome. KEITH MOON, we love you buddy, rest in peace.
To: peredrum,Alipedree, sorcerydrummer and The spanna96. THANK YOU, for your comments supporting the Legendary drummer Keith Moon. He was truly a one and only drummer and major contributor to the WHO's overall sound. Mr Dougiew1 is just a looser and knows nothing about the great players of those days or drumming. Keith was one of Britains great players and should be remember as such...period! Let's not forget John Bonham,Alan White,Carl Palmer and so many more from England that we all respected
To MrDougiew1. Well...so your a big time drummer hug! Well D-Bag guess what?
I am,and my authors link tells all how to find me. Just go there or search me out on Google or Bing or anywhere! You can find me alright. But...Your author link has nothing to verify who you are! NO pictures of you playing with anyone,no Record company affiliations,or any information about you? That's because you are BS!!!
Keith Moon was a acomplished and great player,LAPSPD and Alipedreee had it right. Your nothing!
MrDougiew1 right lets get something straight pal, you couldnt teach a turkey drummer to drum let alone chris sharrock twat, secondly if you dont like the who or keith moon for that matter then dont watch the fuckin videos clown, and finally cunt you couldnt hold a tea party for the royal family so stop boasting cause your just full of shit you fucking foney cunt, get a job you bum instead ov sitting on your ass taking the piss out ov the who's songs bum
alipedreee....Is it not possible for you to reply without all the bad language.....or are you not capable something as simple as that....i never used it on you, respect sonny.
@mrDougiew1. Another typical comment from someone who never did anything on there own, let alone at this level, and thinks they know something! You are one miss guided jerk aren't you? What the hell have you done that compares to Kieth Moon? You must be an idiot to make that kind of comment about a legendary player like Kieth Moon. Tell you what... get some talent, take 30yrs or more,. and let's see you do somethimg in music that stands the test of time like Kieth Moon has done!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
To lapspd
Let's make a start...i was drummer with 3 different supporting bands on Status Quo tours, i held the Guinness World Record longest drum solo title ( 356 Minutes ) before it was beaten by an American. I have drummed on every Continent except Australia, Played for the Royal family in Buckingham palace could go on but i would be typing for hours...oh by the way I taught Robbie williams drummer Chris Sharrock.

SuperSlinkyDudeWHO96 1 year ago

I always figred it was Jimmy, but it would make more sense if it were the ace face
bwc3821 1 year ago
@bwc3821 the bell boy is ace face. The thing about it is supposed to be how much jimmy looked up to him, yet ace ends up being beaten into society "always running at someones heal"
hope that helps.
Epicsaursus 1 year ago
@Epicsaursus makes sense, but then Moon's theme is for someone other than Jimmy? I always thought each member of the band was represented as a different personality within Jimmy.
bwc3821 1 year ago
@bwc3821 I know pete wrote the crazy part of doctor jimmy to represent moon, and the "is it me for a moment" part of the song as the more reserved and reflecting entwistle
BobMillahhh 1 year ago
@bwc3821 it was exactly that but it was the fact jimmy idolised the bell boy as he was the ace face but jimmys illusions where smashed whne he discovered the ace face was a bell boy and therefore not any more special than jimmy himself
reksub10 1 year ago
@reksub10 I know what all you guys are saying, I just don't understand why Moon's theme would be for someone other than Jimmy. Each theme, I thought, was suppose to represent a different personality within Jimmy (hench Quadrophenia)
bwc3821 1 year ago
@bwc3821 yeah but remember this is an opera so moon is just singing the bell boy part ,the bell boy is not one of jimmiys personalities the personalities are "* A tough guy, a helpless dancer. (Roger Daltrey)
* A romantic, is it me for a moment? (John Entwistle)
* A bloody lunatic, (Keith Moon)
* A beggar, a hypocrite, love reign o'er me. (Pete Townshend" hope this helps

At 0:30, Keith Moon looks good in this picture.

you nailed it desierto789 --at the same time Pete was paying homage to these people and this era, he was also framing it as a snapshot of teen angst, narcissism, & disillusionment. f'kn brilliant!

This album is awesome!
desierto789 1 year ago

Best band ever created.

GET IT!!!
peredrum 1 year ago 4
@jbar19. You missed the point!!!
lapspd may have made a spelling or typo error, that happens here all the time.
