It's all about heads, the tips reading/writing stuff. If DD is fixed by screws, heads are 'floating' by essence and when there's a shock, unsecured heads can touch the surface and mark it badly.
To prevent that, they placed captors, accelerometers in fact, to detect free falls so when you drop it, heads are folded back until laptop is stable again. Rotation isn't stopped, no need to, plus it would be quite a violent move.
@Skiks you could be right however hdd spinning horizontally and fall occurs vectrally so hdd has at least 6 screws that holds the hdd dics tight and secure. i don't think hdd can crush like that.
@Skiks I don't know if you heard of this, but Lenovo implements a system where it detects when it's falling or in 'high movement' and automatically stops the HDD to prevent damage. Just an FYI :)
They go great lengths to protect your data, if your laptop doesn't make it.
this is so fake, the machine let go of the laptop like a foot away from the ground...why don't you make a video with real free fall and no machine guiding it? cuz the laptop would break if you did?
@honzoid lol the machine could easily have been controlled to fall more slowly than just the acceleration of gravity, and it's not clear here (and notice how a large portion of the overall machine is never shown), so i'd err on the suspicious side :)
the reason its OK is because the thinkpad has an accelerometer which determines if the laptop is going to fall. it then shuts down the hard drive to prevent damage
I don't understand why they don't drop it on a corner. Usually if it's carried its closed and more serious damage occurs on the corner because the energy is dispersed through a small surface area. It would almost be a guarantee that dropping it 7 feet on its corner, battery side, will damage the screen.
@throxnet you didn't answer the question nor is it relavant. Since the laptop has a gyroscope it already parks the hard drive needle when any acceleration is detected. This test is pointless since nobody carrying it or moving it will ever dop it flat. Give it to 8 year to test. terd....
Well ya, but it's the matter of the harddrive not being broken. The protective casing may crack but no matter nearly what way you drop it, it will have about the same kinetic force..
@bombardior because the conditions will not always be the same if it is dropped by a human. if it's dropped by a machine at a specific distance there will be no variables
It doesn't fall onto the blank metal there, as it would in real life. Stone, glass, sand...I think, this would at least scratch the hull or give some serious damage even to this models.
And if you let a Thinkpad fall down, would it always land on the lower side? I don't think so =)
j've just read your comment... well it's true it doesnt always fall on the lower side, at a friend of mine it fell down just on the edge from 1.5 meters.
well it smashed some of the metal inside but it still works fine ;-)
this is extraordinary

a laptop never falls like a cat. i think most of notebooks can do that if it comes to free machine kontrolled cat fall.
BijeloNW 3 months ago
@BijeloNW Depends. A fall like that can damage a hard drive since a hard drive is always spinning when a laptop is in use.

@adidasx45 No, it wouldn't. ThinkPad mobos have insane amounts of protection and the HDD shuts down when it reaches dangerous speeds.
Toomuchtime5798 5 months ago
@adidasx45 lol, dude, physics. The machine actually throws TP, so it hits the ground with higher speed than if machine simply droped it. ;)
