  • Good video bud thanks for all your videos from all here in Ireland.

  • Yes, Dave is on "Dual Survival" along with Cody Lundin. Dave has been doing survival for many years prior to youtube, and was doing youtube prior to "Dual Survival".

  • Nicely done, I always tell my kids to make sure you pack away the tent last thing out to first thing out, Don't need the rain fly before the ground tarp. I like how you said in the beginning to practice at home before going out in the field, rather have a fail in the back yard then a fail in the back country. Great knot coverage, learning a lot from you, thanks.

  • Great info! Thanks! Best on youtube. I just wonder how you deploy that neck knife. All neck knives I've seen mount upside down, so it's easy to deploy. I don't understand the set up of his right side up necker knife. Seems like it would have to be removed completely to use. This guy knows his shit!

  • is this the guy from dual survival

  • great intro, and well video all together

  • Great knott Dave- looks like a Mule Knot. 100% loadable

  • Great video! Thanks.

  • I agree, very true. People always make fun of me for hammock camping in my parent's yard, but when you wake up in the middle of the night because something is wrong, it's nice to be home. Then you can learn and try again next time and not be miserable all night.

  • That, sir, was not a Rant, that was honest gospel Truth. Thank you for saying that, thank you very much.

  • I can't believe that I've never seen this video. Outstanding of course.

  • Anybody know what type of tarp he is using? I like that it has tie spots all along the sides and not just the corners. Any info is helpful, thanks.

  • Very cool uses of knots thank you, very informative.

  • what is the name of that back pack.

  • @CODGOD321BOOM duluth pack

  • @survival919 thanks bro!!

  • Experienced hammocker here......dont hang it tight, seriously, its not the proper method

  • @JPsaxMIA as a rule of thumb you are correct...however that line that he's using to tie that hammock up has horrendous stretch, requiring him to start with a super tight set-up; it would stretch and relax after you laid in it for a few minutes...i use dyneema for my tie-lines and that stuff has zero stretch, so i know what you mean, if i made mine that tight it would never work. it all depends on the particular application :)

  • @minimalistsurvival I use dyneema aswell ( amsteel whoopies which Im sure you are talking about ) and yeah that chord which im only going to assume is some sort of 550 cord is horrible. I wish more people knew of the proper hanging methods like they know how to setup a tent. Would save many a butt ;]

  • @JPsaxMIA amsteel it is! only i work at a sort of sailing distribution store so i get it bulk ;)

  • great teaching, very helpful to me for my hammock set up, thanks!

  • Great video, Dave! Thanks for taking the time to show and explain. Gettin ready for another trip to the BWCA wilderness in northern Minnesota USA, and we're bringing hammocks and tarps and will definitely be using your instructions to help us setup and break down efficiently. Appreciate it!

  • That's the same method I use to hang my hammock, the only difference being that I place knots a about palms width apart (3-4 inches apart). Everything stores into the bag that is attached to the hammock....very handy

  • Bowline: (get the loop the right way) Rabbit comes out of the hole, goes round the tree, and back into its hole.

  • Thank you for this. Very helpful and intuitive.

  • a slip hitch?

  • This is yet another fantastic video Dave. I was first introduced to you via the Dual Survivor show and just out of curiosity, did a search on youtube. From that point on, I have been hooked!!! Just ask my wife. I not only appreciate the material you teach, but the manner in which you teach it. Great job and I wish you all the best.

  • Great vid. However if I was to use that hammock hang up system I would trade the hook for a carabiner ( added security.)

  • This was a great video, you describe how to do things so clearly and easy. Many thanks friend :-)

  • It's pronounced like how we Texans pronounce bowling. 'Hey Joe Bob less go-a bowlin' tuh natt.' Sorry, it's the USCG Aviator in me.

Another loop and bend you might want to learn is the Zeppelin Bend (& the loop). The Bowline is a great knot, perfect for what you are using it for. But if you ever need to join two lines or make a loop that'll be under enormous tension, even holding a titanic zeppelin to earth or towing the Titanic, the Zep is your dog.

Dual Survivalist fan here big time.

  • Relly good video ,, keep them coming..,

  • One of the better videos on youtube for sure.

  • Just FYI, the knot he ties at 10:10 is called a highwayman's hitch.

  • im very glad i watched this video. i doubt ive ever learned so much in 25 minutes, or learned such useful things in 25 minutes.

really appreciate the effort you put into this video and on getting good camera angles, thanks. GREAT video.

  • Great video! I'm setting up my camp in my backyard intending to replicate it on the property I own in the mountains of VA over the 4th of July weekend. Very well presented.

  • Saved to my favorites:)

  • 17:00 whit this knot i have some problem. in my hands this mod. of prusik knot is working backwards .if it is only me then pass , but if you make a related video for this one i will appreciate it

  • hey!!! i just watched you make a hammock out of a piece of bamboo. you're the one who wears socks and shoes right? lol, jk. great vid dave, very informative

  • At 10:00 when you put the 550 around the tree and pull it tight, have you ever had the cord cut through itself?

  • r u on tv

  • I'm wondering if you can tell me what knife your carrying on your neck there? Thanks dave.

  • Thanks Dave.

  • Awesome video......what length of cord do you hank to each loop in the tarp? Like what length do you recommend? 25 foot paracord?

  • Those stakes are also great for jungle vampires

  • Hey did you say crucick knot, how do you say it or spell it? Love your video's Dave.

  • @yescoal

The knot he mentions is a "prussik" knot.

  • Good stuff bro love all your videos. Keep them coming.

  • Nice vid

  • the best tarp tightening up knots i saw till now!

  • Thank you helped alot !!!

  • it is not bow like in crossbow it is bow like in the bow of boat

  • some of the best vids on "how to" on this site. thanks for giving great advice, thanks for actually speaking from experience too! keep up great work

  • Thanks for information video.

  • Good video but you could realy use a camerman, would make things a lot easer.

  • were can you buy the tarp?

  • Awesome video!!

  • I was looking for away to make shelter that was easy to setup and quick to pack and go. Thanks for the info. I fav. so I can practice the knots. I have a ? What is a mms sleep system? I assumed you meant a kind of blanket!

    Thanks tamron

  • very interesting i love servival and am learning everything about it im going to be in the marines soon this video was good im learning survival in myA.F.J. R.O.T.C.class we just finished learning about knots so it good to know the ones you showed to have a veriaty is better

  • Dave, that was so informative my friend. I just wanted to say thanks for the fantastic teaching. You have taught me more than any other person on the planet my friend. What a great video! Loved it! Well done.

  • Great video, thank you for sharing your knowledge. It answered some questions I'd had. Thanks again.

  • yo man

    you are my idol

ps : are you from dual survival

  • I practise in my back garden and glad for it as it made my first trip out so much easier having put methods into practise before hand. Your rant needed no apologie sir.

  • hell i just use a truckers hitch but the loop is hard to remove when your done. your knot doesnt have that problem. nice.

  • @GooberShot The trucker's hitch is better for pulling tension on that ridgeline. This is a good system Dave has (as always - great vids, Dave), but that modified prussic doesn't actually pull any more tension on the line. You can do an alpine butterfly instead of an overhand loop and it will come right out even after all the weight it holds. Or just do a real trucker's hitch which pulls straight out. I need to put out a vid on this, and will, soon.

  • @TheHumanPath that alpine butterfly looks like a nice loop ill have to try that next time. thanks for the info.

  • @GooberShot Cool, yeah I like a variation of the alpine that is easier to learn and remember. I go through that knot and a variation of the trucker's hitch - along with a quick-release anchor knot that is really handy - on my blog. Can't post URL's here because of spam, but if you google "Sam Coffman" my blog should pop up, and it's called "useful knots" part 1 and 2.

  • so great that i found your vids and so educational for survival and everything else, so cool. My dream is just to live of of nature and if that wer to happen i can survive thanks to you. Keep making these vids, so awesome.

  • Hi Dave,

Your bowline knot is very useful. This weekend in the wilderness I replace the knots on the ropes on my tarp with these.

I also learned your 'modified prusik knot' and found is somewhat slipping with nylon rope. So I pulled the loop through itself a second time. This way the knot locked very well. Thanks for your lessons, it's a bit like a wilderness training at home in the hammock in front of my PC monitor...

    So I

  • For anyone trying the bowline like he tied around the tarp loop, he made a little mistake at that point. Make a loop in the rope first (not through the tarp), then pass the tag end through the tarp (or around whatever you are tying) and tie the rest of the knot like he shows. Otherwise you are tying the object into the middle of the knot, instead of where the load bearing loop is supposed to be. This effectively creates a slip-knot, which causes the problem technologu was having.

  • this is very useful....thanks alot

  • Great video, I really like hw you explain each knot and show how it functions, best video Ive found so far!

  • Excellent instruction Dave.

    Thanks.

  • hi....i saw maybe 20 vids about knots...and have u gave a clear,easy to see demonstrations....thanks....anyway i love all ur videos,....good work

  • This is the same guy that curses and whines on tv?

  • HEYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS TO THIS GUY I WAS ABLE TO SPEND A FULL 8 MONTHS IN THE WILDERNESS OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BY MYSELF WITH A PELLET GUN........THANKS BROTHER MUCH APPRECIATED

  • thanks dave!

  • This was an informative video. I watched it all the way through. I will be using your techniques when I go camping next time Thanks.

  • Dave, first bow line knot you did and the second( on the tarp) are different! :)....First is good , it doesn't slip and it doesn't slide and it's a load bearing one, like you said. But the one on the tarp it slides and it slips and I'm not sure how much load it can bear. I know, because I tried them all , exactly like you say in the video. Thanks a lot , these are great lessons. It took me a few days to figure out and remember. But if I'm not right with the bow line knots give me dislikes.;)

  • hey dave in this video i noticed that you have used many knots but all you really need is the truckers hitch. if you would like to lern to tie this knot let me know.

  • @crows59 youtube has the how to video for this knot

  • Great video..

I just started watching the other day.. my buddy told me about your channel.

I've picked up alot of useful tips and suggestions for gear and what not.

I plan on adding/changing my camping year as soon as I can.

    Thanks for your hard work.

  • Inspiring video. Makes me want to ditch that heavy tent I cart around and go with a nice simple system like the one in the vid!

  • GO Dave! Great

  • Excellent Instruction!

  • Great videa, as with all his clips he gives you all the details.

  • Good vid very informative

  • The best stuff I have seen . Now I need a couple of weeks to absorb it all.

    Thanks for your effort

    Marc

  • Thank.s :-)

  • Just out of curiosity, when you used a modified knot to tighten the ridge-line around the tree, couldn't you also have used a timber hitch? It seems like that might be faster. But if you didn't have enough tension it might slip.

  • Isn't that knot at 11min a highwayman's hitch?

  • Hey Dave what HAMMOCK DO YOU USE? I really need one and that looks perfect very small and light weight and I cant find a hammock thats small and light weight. thats not gonna cost me 170 dollars.

  • Dave, not only have you presented a good instructional video, you have also shown the knots in practical applications. And on top of that, application which I am interested in, ie. Bushcraft. Thanks man. You really did a great job on this lesson. 5 starz bro.

  • very useful

  • Excellent! Thank you very much for taking the time to shoot this. I have a few books on knots, but what you teach here really shows that nothing beats a man with experience! Absolutely something I will use.

  • Those modified knots of your really have made my life a lot easyer, thanks!!!

  • Congratulations Dave for the discovery channel man you finally did it. My uncle has been following you for a while gearldlee33 i think is the name and he has gotten my interested in watching. GO DAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great work as usual!!

    thnx for the vid.

    Greetings from the Netherlands :)

  • overhand loop

    rabbit comes out the hole

    goes round the tree

    back into the hole

this little saying helped me learn the bowline knot

  • Great vid Dave.

I love the k.i.s.s. Way of thinking. Keep it simple stupid. Please keep up the good work. How r things with discovery going. I know I have learned so much from u in this forum would love to see what u could do with big money backing u. Wish I could see u this weekend at the get together. Please don't let this be the only one. Just ask for more of a heads up if possible. For better planning.

  • I'm going to say that knots are very hard to explain but Dave does an excellent job showing all of us how to do it. Great job. Love the length. Its like watching your fav tv show. I couldnt have done better my self. Thanks dave, keep up the good work and hows the Duel Survivor show goin???

    SurvivalWithBushCraft

  • Don't forget Dave Wendel. He did a pretty good job too.

  • Teaching knot tying must be tough. If you're like me, you just tie them from second nature, but being able to accurately describe the steps you take to get them tied is impressive. Good work, let us know how Discovery Channel is coming along.

  • You definitely met the challenge on the camera work, brother C! I like the way you tied the bitter ends of the lines, but when I teach young folks who might get tangled up how to do these things, I suggest using simple rubber bands, which can also be used for trap engines, mini-crossbows, and sometimes fire tinder, etc. Storing a rubber band under some 100 MPH near the tarp guy points makes them handy and also gives you a tarp patch after a deadman pokes your hooch. Stuff Happens. oo-RAGH.

  • that bow knot is perfect dave! you can make the loop bigger and smaller to tighten around a bow BUT not matter how hard you pull the tag wont pull ot! 5/5 as always

  • The only problem with taht is that alot of people are overwhelmed by the length

  • Hey, Dave how long do you recommend the tarp ropes should be? I need to get my tarp out and get it rigged up like yours so it's easy to set up.

  • 2-3 foot longer than your body length or 1 metre eiter end of the tarp, tintin

  • Dave,

I want to try to video my hunt. Will you share with me what camera you use or tell me what camera I need?

    Thanks,

    Mark

  • Man! Again! Thanks for Your commitment and patience to teach us! Just the video i needed!

  • Dave,

Your instructional skills continue to grow!

  • I always remember the bowline as under, over, around and through. A good way to learn to do them well is to take a length of rope with you and one end and a friend on the other. Have a completion to see who can tie a one handed bowline first. When done with the knot, yank on the rope. Getting you fingers caught as your buddy yanks his knot tight prompts you to learn to tie it much faster.

  • 5 stars again. Knots, simple but often overlooked. The knot at 10:30 looks like some kind of modified slippery hitch, I'll be trying that one out.

  • As a response to MacTeutates, the knots Dave are referring to are Bowline, and Prusik knots. Definately need to know knots for all applications.

Also, stuffing the tarp is the only way to go. If you fold the tarp (or tent for that matter) you're going to make stresses in the fabric that will eventually crack.

    Sorry for two posts.

  • I'm fairly certain that the "tag" end of your rope can also be called the "working" end. Just a bit of additional information to help if you're reading up on knots on other websites.

  • Yep, Standing end and working end. But remember different people from different area's have other names they use, from a boating background I use working and standing.

  • great video!

    5*s!

  • Dude Dave! When are you going to deal with ticks, chiggers, skeeters, etc. when there is no man made stores to buy Cutter???????? How did the Indians do it? No one answers that ever!

  • Check out the yarrow plant.

  • Yes please do check out the yarrow plant. Dave made a couple of videos about how to make various insect repellents. He also discussed how to make a variety of salves. Essential oils are also covered.

  • thanks for another great video. i have learned alot from your videos

  • It wasnt so many months ago that we were talking about the versa shelter and various ways to sleep on the ground. Now it seems that we have moved to hammocks, which I think is a fine way to go. I love hammocks. But I will be very interested in seeing more information about winter camping with the hammock.

  • Surely you have been following my vids and re, actually the Vec hawk adds very minimal weight.alize that I am testing both a Vec hawk and a Treklight Hammock at present-They cannot be tested unless utilized

  • I try to always watch your outstanding videos. We count on you to test things before you sell them. And you do a great job. I mean that seriously.

I should have recognized the fact that it was the Vec Hawk in the video.

Im told it sells for around $200.

Yes that was the one that broke during testing. Sorry for not recognizing it. That was silly of me.

  • Actually, not to nit pick, Brother royce', but the hawk in this video is another; This hawk has been used more in-line with normal bush practices as far as I know, and is a different kind of hawk anyways (longer, different composite materials). We think you should use the hawk ANY WAY YOU WANT TO though. We'll cover it. I think that is a decent deal. We are already making impovements on the Hawks to mee Bro C's needs in the field. Thanks, Brother C, for continuing to feature your hawks. - vec

  • @wildernessoutfitters It looks like a Cold Steel Trail Hawk. How do you carry it; in your belt?

  • I dont mean this as a criticism, but there seems to be a bit of inconsistency with bedding. In this video I dont see a wool blanket. Im wondering why. And I notice that you used what looked like a tomahawk for pounding your tarp stakes into the ground. Do you make it a point to carry a tomahawk? Certainly, such an item adds weight.

  • thanks for all the hard work you are doing!

  • Hey Dave, good vid. Are you saying Cursive knot or Pursive knot?

  • Great video as usual. Good demo.

  • Thanks again Dave. There are soo many videos that teach knots but fail to show the practical applications of them, thanks for the "common man" knot lesson.

  • thanks Dave you the man !

  • Dave, can you give me the name of a place that sells parachord in bulk, i use purlon for all my ridge lines and anchors which is pretty cheap and in bulk comes for £8.99 for 300feet. its pretty strong too.but i want to have plenty of paracord in reserve. thanks for the vids, how is the discovery coming along?

  • Dave, thanks for posting these. As a landlocked son of a son of a son of a sailor, getting into bush-craft has helped

knock some dust offa the ol' awl!

  • Grate video, thank you for showing how to tie some knots. I did not know the modifies thank you.

  • Great video Bro!

I especially like the moddifies "Taut Line" hitch.. Well done my friend.

  • Awesome video. Very practical information.

  • Fantastic video Dave. Sure to bring alot of guys up to speed with your system. I can see it is no nonsense in nature. Appears to me that there are only a few other knots that might be needed to be an all round roping system, yet in this case it is definitely all you need to make camp. An Artillerymans hitch is another good knot to know as it helps in climbing or in the least give a way to haul or drag a heavy load. As always a 5 star, rock on.

  • Nice demo on knots Dave. Very practical easy knots. I have two ropes in my bag and use them exactly like you showed for hanging my Hammock Bliss No See-Um hammock, works out great. I use a coleman rainfly from a beat up 3 man tent for my tarp and will definately be using the diamond setup. Thanks for the videos Bro!

    Mike in Kettering Ohio

  • Practice is practice no matter if I am in my living room or in the middle of a PA state park someplace. Just my thoughts on the subject. Love the vids Dave thanks for taking the time to make them.

  • This is exactly what I was looking for. Dave you are the Man. Just bought the TL Hammock based on your review. The tarp is arriving soon. The knot lesson was Excellent and I'll be good to go. Thanks.

  • Great job! Thanks, Dave!

  • Diamond shape means u can see the stars while lying in your hammock. Can't beat that.

  • Thanks again brother for all u have showed us...

  • Dave love all ur vids. keep up the good work. Ur vids. are real life savers. wish i could watch some that have already been taken down. THANKS DAVE

  • EXCELLENT way to hang your tarp.

  • gr8 improvised prusik release,gr8 improvisation ,respect tintin

  • u have gr8 improviseation skill dave, those mprvsd prusik quick release knotswere cool ill b trying 2 replicate nxt time im setting up my tarp, ,iv picked up some great advice from your vids ,thanx andgood luck with the new vids, also u have some good guys as instructirs in the pathfinder school, respect ffrom TinTin, im jst glad that u have made it possbl 2 lrn these skills from your utube vids ,,,respect again cause u have mine

  • Something I've been using lately and having a lot of luck with are the "Nite Eyez Figure 9" I've been using them on the guy-outs for my tarp/hammock combo. For $10.00 I got 4 of them as well as 4-8' foot reflective lines. Just something I thought was worth mentioning.

  • great info as normal dave the skill of knowing;learning these skills is priceless,i kike the prusik quick release9 imorovisation at its best, keep up with the gr8 vids, respect TinTin. +5

  • Dave how do those ABF stakes work in winter with frozen ground?

  • Nice video Dave, although I've used all those knots before, I like the combinations you used and I like the taut line with release. Keep 'em coming, thanks!!

  • Awesome video...simple effective setup. Well done

  • Tons of great info. Love that set up. 5 stars man thabks for another vid.

  • Very Very Nice......one of the best tarp/hammock video setups I have seen

  • I loved that rant.

    Thank you.

  • Excellent video. Thank You.

  • I bet thats UPI woring on the bridge if its concert but fresh vid Dave

  • very good 5 stars

  • Top notch video... nice work

  • If you really want a taut line when stringing your hammock, try a trucker's hitch.

  • is this the same tarp you sell on your website in the kit? looks lighter , i like that !!

  • The already attached rope to the tarp is a nice idea. Saves you some time in an emergency situation! I think I'll do that right now.

Thanks for showing us how to tie those knots. I think you explained 'em well(!)

  • GOOD JOB DAVE

  • that will be the home of the future. 3 more years and 60 million will call a tarp home.

    thanks dave

  • same i say, dont make your camp to far from settlements, if its to far you dont get ther so often you should, and if some thing happen then is not to far to get help,

the bush look the same if you walk 20min or 2 days,

  • very thorough.

  • Dave,

Do ever use the bungee cords that you reccomended I buy fot the versa shelter? Just wondering, I havent seen you use or reccomend them for a long time.

    Thanks Mark.

  • I do but usually for ground camping when I dont care about a ridge line.

  • Dave,

Thanks, that makes sence. BTW. I have tried to watch others try to teach how to tie knots and usally fall asleep befor they are done. You make it interesting and I feel I can learn the knots when you teach. Thank you.

    Mark

  • Yet another great vid - I'm already looking at my tarp and hammock to see where I can adapt it along the lines of this video.

Thanks very much for taking time out to go over something much overlooked.

  • What a coincidence! I just learn a whole bunch of knots, then you make this video... awsome. Very useful! Keep up the great work Dave!

  • who makes that tarp?

  • I may have missed it somewhere but kind of tarp are you using this setup?

  • Pathfinder tarp. you can finf it in his web site.

  • Definitely a very fast set up!

  • Great video. Thanks for that Dave.

  • Thanks for another great vid Dave good to have you back and posting regular again!

  • sweet video dave

  • A great video very informative.

  • 2 suggestions. First check out shugemery. He has lots of videos on winter camping in a hammock. Talks a lot about his setup. Second. If you cut a guy-line to match the length of your hammock with s-hooks and then did the same loop with knots for attaching to the tree you just knocked that setup down to seconds. Put the same s-hooks on your tarp to attach to the same set of knots as the guy-line and you could have the entire setup done in under 2 min easy. Just tie up the loose ends of the tarp

  • Again Dave - another great video - priceless. Thanks! - Vince
