What on earth would "the people" use it for: convert it into a hotel? It seems to fit the bill for a residence of a Head of State. And, it's an important part of British heritage.
@BillDFC Hi. I guess, another point in it's favor is that it gives direct and indirect employment locally. It's an important tourist attraction for Scotland; and when tourists do arrive, they contribute to the local economy..
Is there alot of security on the grounds when the queen is in residence? I mean, it's not like you can walk up to the door at dinner time and ask for the queen, right.
We were supposed to visit Balmoral castle while we were in Scotland, but couldn't because the Queen was there. It was cool to see the "approved" businesses in Ballatar where she had been. While we were getting scones from a bakery we saw that prince Charles had been there.
Fascinating to see. It must be really strange having complete strangers wandering about your property, especially as the Royal Standard seems to be flying - presumably The Queen is in residence.
She was not in residence. The Lion Rampant flag is not the Royal Standard. The Royal Standard has four quadrants. In Scotland, two of the quadrants have the Scottish lion rampant, with the other two being the 3 lions rampant of England and the Irish harp. Outside of Scotland, the 3 lions rampant are repeated and it is the Scottish lion that reduces to one quadrant.

@vivaldizz It lies empty most of the time until the tourists arrive anyway.

@vivaldizz By the "tourists" I was refering to the English royal family.

@BillDFC They can't because this castle is privately owned by the HM The Queen, and so is not owned by the State.

There was a report that before Diana died she was seriously considering the Queen's suggestion that she use one of the houses on the Balmoral estate.
