....actually, quite informative and entertaining video. Just in case you play trumpet or another brass instrument, I think you might find some trumpet and brass tutorials quite intriguing over at YOURBRASSINSTRUCTOR's Channel.
Awesome, I'll see him in a few days! Unless there's another Nelson B. and Kiku working together...? I'm going to check out all of your videos when I get a chance, I got Pops books about a year ago and I see you refer to him a few times. I'm assuming you're out by NB in SF? I'll be at ITG this year if you're making your way east. Have a great week! :)
Thanks for the clear explanation on the breathing. I have been having trouble getting above F on the staff. With your explanation, I see that I am using more lower abdomen push with very little if any of the middle muscles around the lungs. No wonder it has taken me so long to get up the top of the staff. I am looking forward to receiving the book.
I like this, I like this a lot. I've been playing for two and a half years now and im heading into highschool all the way to the top group as a freshman. Anyways, the reason why I like this video is that it doesn't promote PRESSING YOUR LIPS AGAINST THE MOUTHPIECE! It took me two whole years of getting rid of that awful habit. And, I like how you added that the volume of air doesn't help you play higher. It's the toung position and air speed!
dude, you really helped me out with my band class with this lesson! i was failing because of my tongue. i never knew how too! now, thanks to you, I KNOW HOW =D
What about "pushing out" stomach (belly)?? is it correct way of blowing? I was teached with "pushing out" belly and now how to breath while playing is really big problem for me.
i was taught to push out my belly as well, i play flute for 6 years and it requires a ton of air (for a result of a little sound)and my instructor said that it's not very good to expand your lungs, so now i'm not really sure to do what
It's refreshing to see someone else advocating this approach to playing. The best book I ever read on brass playing was 'Brass Playing Is No Harder Than Deep Breathing' by Claude Gordon.
I bet he sounds 200X better in real life than through a video. The fact that he knows all these fundamentals so well and wrote a book about them means he must really be good. I don't like his tone on the video, but I think that's just because it's a low-quality video.
Yep, you're on the money here. I consider "free buzzing" an isometric ex. Some people can free buzz with their normal setup and others can't. Those who can usually play with a stable jaw. Those who can't play with a floating jaw. Read Dave Hickman's stuff for a better explanation.
Hi, I know this book, but there is about buzzing with mouthpiece, and I am interested in buzzing on lips only without mouthpiece.
Why I ask, because in my opinion when I try to buzz on lips only I feel that I do it with completely different embouchure and I am not sure it is good exercise for me.

Ive heard that Adam Rapa uses this kind of technique...
Any validity on this?
TheDeepShell 5 months ago
@TheDeepShell Everyone that plays trumpet uses their tongue whether they realize it or not. So it's all valid

tks man! will work on that!

Oooh, can't wait to hear! Wait, do you play EVI? I know he mentioned a trumpeter in the past few months with an EVI, and I was insanely jealous... :)
Anyway, I'll check into your books too. Always excited to learn from another perspective! Take care and maybe we'll meet up sometime in our travels!

I'm a pianist, so this might sound as a stupid question, what is the last syllable in the tongue level section?

Hello!
I have got a question again :)
What about "pushing out" stomach (belly)?? is it correct way of blowing? I was teached with "pushing out" belly and now how to breath while playing is really big problem for me.
fredas1988 4 years ago
I don't think that's correct. Now you can relax the abdominal area when inhaling which is common in yoga breathing, but not when exhaling.

DrgRiderz17 4 years ago
i mean bad for your rib cage, not expanding the lungs
DrgRiderz17 4 years ago
I agree, I was also taught to use your diaphram.

I think your talking about circular breathing you puff up your cheecks and when you need to take a breath you push your cheecks in and you breathe in

Hi, you emphasize that a CHEST must be UP. Should be keeping chest up obtained "by muscular force"?
fredas1988 4 years ago
No. It comes up naturally by taking a big breath. This is demonstrated in the video.
The muscles come into play to KEEP THE CHEST UP.

Hi, but after big breath, when my chest is up, while I am blowing the chest should be kept up as long as it is possible by muscles?
fredas1988 4 years ago
That's it!!

Hi, I have got two questions:
1. how loud should be play these exercises?
2. what do you think about lip buzzing?
(Thanks for your videos!!! are very helpful)
fredas1988 4 years ago
1. a comfortable mf is good for most of the exercises. Although you should go for the "fat" sound on the long tone low notes.
2. I've done some lip buzzing. I recommend Jim Thompson- The Buzzing Book

actually the diaphragm does very little. As I mention in the video, the blowing muscles are in the abdominal & chest area.
