He's an AWESOME guitarist but I feel he's missing one thing really... the ability to play one note or one run and sustain a bend that just lets everyone proccess what he just did... I think what happens with him is hes all over the place and its amazing but hes not letting his guitar do too much screaming
LOL. I agree. Just because this guy isn't the STAR of Woodstock & Isle of Wight fame doesn't mean he isn't any good. I'm a jazz player myself. Alvin's great, this guy's great. Love 'em both.
yeah..joe`s all right..but shit! i saw alvin lee do goin` home at the capital theatre in portchester..back in the late sixties..when they broke into that number it was 2 am and the crowd went nutz..i mean nutz!
yeah...I saw Alvin with Ten Years After in the late 60's too. The crowd never went nutz, because most of them were too stoned...I mean stoned! The audiences started going nutz in the 70's after release of the Woodstock movie that made Alvin a movie star, changed the audience to teeny boppers and destroyed the musical direction of the band. I've seen TYA with Joe Gooch 19 times, and I've seen the crowd go nutz at many of those shows too...!!
I've played in a couple of bands with Joe(I'm so proud!),and he's technically tons better than he's playing here,he's keeping it all bluesy I think so as not to go over people's heads...Maybe that's what numb-nuts means when he says he's a 'bar band' guitarist!Hope Joe's having a good time with TYA,but hope he can get enough recognition in his own right,to be able to front his own serious outfit soon.(that's when I get the call to be your bassist Joe, hint...)
Is there a problem? All guitar players are original, because each one is different. Comments that Joe Gooch is a "bar band" guitarist say more about those who post such words than they say about the band, because Ten Years After (past & present) are clearly all superb musicians.
I posted this video, and a couple others, to provide viewers with examples of Ten Years After as they are today. I guess comparisons to the past and present TYA guitarists are inevitable, but which one anybody prefers is solely a matter of taste - not speed or anything else. I would hope most people are, by now, living beyond 1969 and not "Woodstuck". Personally, I very much appreciate the guitar styles of both Alvin Lee and Joe Gooch.
Of course there's going to be comparisons, since as you stated "as they are today". I think a Boston DJ said it best after the Somerville, Ma. show last year "he's no Alvin Lee, but he does a good job". I think most people are actually living in 2007 and looking beyond. But what's nice is we have choices.
I was at Somerville last year and know the DJ of which you speak. Following the show, he said to me he was "very impressed". On the radio, he recently said Joe Gooch was not born when Ten Years After played at Woodstock, "but he does a good job". The DJ never said "he's no Alvin Lee". Fact: Joe Gooch is not Alvin Lee, and Alvin Lee is not Joe Gooch. Opinion: They are both masterful guitarists. Suggestion: music should be judged on how it sounds, not by the name of the person or band playing it.
Sunday Morning Blues show. He said what your refering to the following day on the live one at 1. You are correct:neither is either. I am judging how it sounds to me. Joe Gooch is not in the same league as Alvin Lee, not yet anyways. When Jimmy Paige goes to a show and plays air guitar to Joe as he did to Alvin at The Royal Albert Hall, then maybe. This could go on forever, so last reply. Your entitled to your opinion, me mine. Keep Rockin'.

Eric: Makes no sense to compare anyone to Alvin. Any music fan will acknowledge Joe is an outstanding guitarist. SA
