That's what's so great about him--he is genuinely curious and interested, particularly in these "fringe" elements of society. It's also not well known in the US, but a panel was convened in the UK not long ago to systematically review the evidence, anecdotally or otherwise, of extraterrestrial life and encounters on earth. This sort of thing is given more credibility outside the US.
