Based on what? Hey, I liked him, too, but what did he do to deserve sainthood? I happen to still believe in Purgatory (which is required of all Catholics), and it's our duty to pray for his soul, not to canonize him.

Because, if you know about him, you will realize that he was one of God's most humble servants. He accepted his role in life. Perhaps, he even knew he would not be Pope for very long.

We can do without saints, but not without men of the calibre of this one. As far as I'm concerned Albino Luciani doesn't need the sactification of the church. He's the closest I've seen yet in a mere man trying to emmulate Jesus. When I look at some who have been granted sainthood in the past it would almost be an insult to Albino to class him alongside them.
