Arguably one of the best tv footie themes from an exciting era. ITV London viewers had 'Star Soccer' with Peter Lorenzo at the mike before the late Brian Moore on The Big Match.
Slighltly drunk staccato fanfare and superb drumming don't recall "more innocent times" but more wholesome ones.
Birds, booze, aftershave, brill cream, hot dogs, betting shops, car garage ads, one crest, a goal and a wave, along the thames and a beautiful city...........no cctv, idiots with trouser round their knees, hair gel and carlos don'tknowtheirborn kickaballs club hopping like poof golfers.......Fulham Fan
I guess LWT wanted to launch the show with colour titles but, not having their own library had to use Pathé News footage of World Cup '66 & the '68 European Cup Final. But it looks like they did shoot the Chelsea vs Arsenal scenes themselves.
Nice though. I've seen B&W titles on a LWT fansite I guess from 70/71.

Damn it I was too young to enjoy the greatest period of the game.
I hate the modern game.

The Big Match ...for some reason I always remember Don Rodgers and Swindon...dunno why!
GODD BRITISH FOOTBALL yes British players, who did not fall down every bloody 5mins, or if they did would get up and carry on playing.

I heard this piece on a television advert here in the States back in the mid '90s. Forgot what it was for, but this song was totally retro. :oP

This is the intro I remember best, the one with Geoff Hurst scoring the World Cup winning goal at the end.
