Yes, there was a rivalry between the two. They were two actresses pretty much competing for story lines so that's not too hard to see. Alison Arngrim wrote that she considered M.A. to be a diva. Maybe she was but I don't care. Melissa Sue was one of my first crushes. When I was a teen she was smoking hot. I started watching LHOTP just for her.

It's like if you have a kindergartener and a 3rd grader and you put them together on a set, chances are, they won't bond as much as a k-k or 3-3. Having to grow up around perfection can cause dysfunction. One acts perfect because they are expected to and loose who they really are trying to please others. Putting on an act is not normal & causes one to loose touch w/ their own true feelings. What we feel is what makes us an individual.

I haven't read all of Melissa G's Bio what I did read M.G.didn't say much. In so many words to Alison Aringrin there's 1 of the cast that wasn't nice which eludes one to believe it was M.SueA.& their 1st arguement in show was real rivalry. Now think about it.. when M.G.started she was young & I believe would like to be friends w/the cast. It's possible MSA could have been unhappy w/MG's relationship w/ML tho I Really don't know for sure! M.G. lost her dad young. I don't know the real truth.

Melissa Sue Anderson was/is prettier than Melissa Gilbert and I do believe they weren't exactly friends. They may not have hated each other but resented each other. I think Missy was jealous the Melissa got more attention from Michael Landon and a stronger part while Melissa probably was jealous that Missy probably got more attention from boys. Strangely enough Melissa and Alison Arngrin were great friends - probably b/c they were closer in age.

I'm reading Melissa Gilbert's biography (got it from the library), Melissa Gilbert has nothing nice to say about Melissa Sue Anderson. It's obvious Gilbert can't stand Anderson. I think it's jealousy. Melissa Sue Anderson was/is a great beauty. Melissa Gilbert is attractive but no great beauty. Never was. Gilbert's biography is weird. Melissa Gilbert's memoir is called Prairie Tale. If you are a big fan of Melissa Gilbert you will like the book. Barnes and Noble would have a copy or your local bookstore would have a copy or could quickly get you a copy. If you have a library, they probably have a copy and you can read it for free. That's what I did.

She was an adorable little girl, but it is only now in her middle ages that she sounds like a whiny adult-child. She complained about a lot of people for the things that went wrong in her adult years, rather than taking some responsibility for what went wrong.  Also she hasn't see her brother Jonathan Gilbert in 18 years or so and is at peace with it. Just very strange.

MG was clearly the star(let) of the show, so I don't see how she could have been jealous of MSA. As a 13 year old male, the first time I saw MSA I was in love, and wished MSA had more screen time. As both matured, I felt MSA, although still pretty, lost the "fresh faced silky hair" look, while MG BLOSSOMED, where she became "fresh faced, silky hair" gorgeous.
