@DaKulGuy He gets paid for the gigs he does plus his YouTube channel gets a shit ton of money I'm sure. I have only a little over 300 subs and make $50 a month.
Great video, Im still kinda confused tho... waht are bass caps again and what are they for ? If you need more bass why is it that you cant jsut add an external sub to your PA system?
Hi there, Question: I got 2 PA speakers 700 watts 8 ohms inpedance, is a 2000W amplifier good enough? What if I want to add a sobwoofer? Looking forward 4 ur advise
@armauniizbeasty are you a billionaire ? search speakers on djsuperstore and sort by price descending but don't forget you'll need an amplifier which at that power is double the price of the speakers
...t effects. My questions to you guys are: do you guys find our current system sufficient for a medium to large lobby in a hotel? Should we invest in acoustic/electrics or would you say that were fine the way we are? What would you guys recommend in regards to a nice sounding PA with multiple mic jacks? Thanks in advance for any help!
Please mind that we are only beginning our giging and are on a tight budget.
For a while, my band has been using an acoustic guitar set-up. What we did was set up 5 mics. 2 per guitarist and 1 for our percussionist( by the way none of the equipment is ours, it's almost always the dj's at the party we played at). The guitarists each had one mic on their guitar's soundholes and the other mic as a vocal mic. Our percussionist doesnt sing so he obviously dosnt need two mics. We find that our style dosnt need to many extras to sound good so we normally play withou
im a college freshman and want to throw dorm parties of 50 to 100 people. what set up would you recommend? Something thats not too ridiculously expensive. Also i don't know anything about DJ-ing and would prefer to play music just off my lap to.
Great stuff, this video summarises everything you need to know about small PA's in nearly 13 minutes. And it mentions all the little thing people often getting wrong. nice work ;)
Also remember....by boundary loading your bass ie. placing your bin the the corner of a room with solid walls will give you roughly an extra 9db of bass...thats more than twice as much power for free!
Talking about wattage is a very common mistake...people should concentrate on how many decibels the speaker can produce over a certain distance...and just as important.....the coverage ie. the level, quality and where the sound is heard. No use having 10,000W per side if the sound system can only produce 100db or 130db of harsh ear bleeding crap!. Quality,Level and Coverage is more important the any wattage rating...Go and listen with your own ears..
then I'd have the right ohms, but 240w for an amp side designed for 60w. Is that right? so is the answer buy a new amp or new speakers, which would be better do you think? Another option is they also have 2 mission 702e floor speakers here. They are 25-100w and 8 ohms each. Would I do better to try and connect them?(although they are wire connecters and the amp is 1/4 jack) Or would that just not be big enough? I realise they'd have wrong ohms again as well unless I doubled... any thought would
Hey, firstly thanks very much for the vid - it was really helpful. Can I ask a bit of advice? Sorry the question will be a bit long-winded.
Bit of back ground: moved to an arts center which does small 70 seater MAX gigs using relatively low amplification (jazz music mostly, mostly vocals) and trying to get the best out of what's here and spend minumum money! They have 2 Kustom KSC10 speakers (120w 8ohms) and a Kustom KPM 4060 (60w 4 ohm (per side?)) amp. If I double up speakers (to be cont!)
Any chance of doing a video on setting up a dj system say 600 watt speakers and a 500 watt amp. i'm planning on doing a disco and i don't what to blow the amp or speakers.
Hey I have started djing and I have a American audio vms4 which is a dj console. I have a few questions. Do I need a mixer? And I want to play to around maximum 80 people wat kind of speakers and amp do
I need for that and I would like a price below 600 euro if possible? Thanks
I have two Max power 300 Watt 8 Ohm 'RCL' passive speakers, being the gear noob I am, what other gear will I need if I only want to output vocals through these?
@Juulproductoins Yes, you do need an amp. Those speakers aren't designed to handle the sound without using something else (ie an amp) to boost the audio signal to where the speakers are audible. Otherwise, your just pumping signal into speakers they can do nothing with (at least by themselves)
I am sure for what I want I need a combined speaker power of 1000w, probably in 2x 15" unpowered speakers. If these were 4 Ohms, could I put them through an amp at 500w a side at 4 Ohms? Thanks, great videos!
hi johnathan, im thinking of getting new speakers next year(gotta save up first)... im thinking of going RCF, particularly the art 310a speakers and the art 902as subwoofer. i am only going to get 1 sub as havent got a lot of room to transport 2... do u think this will be a good sound system for up to 150 people??
i'm thinking of getting a pair of intimidation AKA 115 its a 15 inch unpowered speaker and a horn. its a 300w speaker and the amplifer i'm thinking of getting is the kam kca 1600. would this system work without nakering the speaker or the amplifer ?
i got 2 sony speackers and there 4 and i got a amp thats 4 as well but the amp smells like the inside of a aircompack i dont knw why it dos but it is good
For a 4 ch 1000w amp whats a good combo for a clean loud outdoor sound well the best i can get with what i have. Its been modified and the 4ohm outputs are bridged with jack plugs for 8ohm outputs so 4x 8ohm output plugs and 4 x 4 ohm outputs 4left 4right
In the amp being a soundtech PL1000MP so i could go 2 speakers 12" subs and mids with horns x2 at 400w.
Okay so, quick question, what kind of output would I need from a PA to run it with a rock band behind me, it'll be use for vocals only and its got to be louder than a drum kit, half stacks etc.
so i have a question ihave an amp its output 1,320w @ 8-ohm bridge-mono 1,950w @ 4-ohm bridge-mono and two subs 500 continuos to 1000 peak @ 8-ohms each if i conect 1 sub to the amp in bridge mono and the other sub i chain conect from the sub @ what ohms will the amp be working 8 ohm or 4 ohm ?
@ ellaskins im upgrading my dj sound and thinking of getting a pair of Harbinger APS15 "active"speakers. As far as the bass bottoms i want to use the CLS-218 dual subs from Cerwinski Lab the specs are 2000w continous -4000w peak@ 4 ohms and thinking of powering it them with the QSC RMX 2450 and bridging them.
Will the subs drown out the Harbingers? If so what speakers do you recomend to keep up with the subs?
Note: i will be hooking up the harbingers to the DDM4000 Mixer via XLR.
The second speaker you showed would be perfect i use mine at the moment in my room but i also always play them at partys with like 50 people but there not quite powerful enough !! how much would one of the second speakers cost ??
hey, im a bedroom/small party dj and i want to buy those larger powered gemini speakers but was wondering can i just connect the 3 speakers via the output and my ipod via one of the other inputs and just plug them into the wall and not buy a mixer? thanks so much.
hi, new here, interested in buying speakers(parts).3way speaker---sub, bass and mid are down, thing is 8 omh, what I buy? 2 by 4 omh and 8 sub or all have to be 8 omh?! Thank!
thanks for your videos, i have a question . im using a sony receiver strde945, with a pair of cerwin vega 215s and another pair of pro studio mach 2s (which are also 215s, ) what should i put my ohm selector on my amplifer too? in order to run ALL these 8 ohm speakers, 4 or 8? thanks very much!
from my understanding, it's not mainly being unver powered that kill a speaker, it the amp being over driven into clipping and the clipping is destroying the speaker. if i missed something let me know.
this is true. look at ohms as valve on a water hose the more ohms the more closed it is. so all your speakers (valves) are 8 ohms you will have so much water flowing with one add another and you have two openings for twice the flow half the ohms. i hope this helps try google for some diagrams.
I need a speaker system preferably powered and I can't spend a penny over 400 dollars on the set. what can I get this is for dj'ing in medium rooms for about 200 people
Think of it this way, when buying a PA, always assign 10 WATTS per person. So If you need a PA for 200 people, you would generally need to get a system that is around 2,000 Watts. So 4 250 Watt 15's and a couple 500 watt bass cabs. Intimidation has good prices. Check out the AKA range of their speaker lineup.
Would u be able to recomend some speakers for me. I'm on quite a tight budget and need them for use in pubs and small clubs, and am going to put vocals, bass drum and maybe guitar trough them. if it's not too much trouble could u just list a few makes and models for me .
i bought a pair of makie sm350 speakers.cost me £500. they are powerd,at 500 per chanel loud enough for a gig of around 250 people if not more and a solid build. i highly recomend them.
This is simply brilliant. No offense, but did you attend the 'roadie school of technology'? Statements like ' input a square signal, and that's almost electricity' have no place in an explanation of power delivery! Superb. 'almost electricity' Make more please!!!
Brilliant!! Just about to start a band (having a mid life crisis at the mo!) the info you give is great. I am looking for a PA set up that 5 people can use including me with an electronic drum kit. Possibly playing to about 100 people... any thoughts on what to go for? I have a budget of just £400 so second hand kit is my only option. I am looking for a mixer too, not sure of price as there are so many to choose from (2nd budget for that not decided yet). Thanks Mark
I don't whether hiring equipment is a big thing in the UK but in my area in Germany it seems to be quite a usual method of getting top quality sound at a very reasonable price.
For example; 2x 18" bass (1kw) with 2x 500w Top speakers will set you back around €100 (£85) to hire for a day. They are 'active' speakers too and are quality products such as JBL or KS which would set you back around £5,000.
see the active crossover does that mean if i buy that i can get another two speakers and another amp like i have and use my mixer to channel it all through
No what he said was you can hook up 4x 8ohm speakers at 500 watts rms to one amplifier that is 2x1200watts @ 4ohms Never run an amp at 2 ohms even if they say its a 2ohm amp they dont like to work too hard
also you can run a active crossover on one amp but it would be running in mono put your bass bins one one channel and tops on the other and i would not use powered mixers or speakers as you cant run active crossover (you get more control over the sound )
I'm currently using a pair of Yorkville NX250P, 200 W powered speakers and I have one JBL PRX518S 500w powered subwoofer. I'm also using a dbx DriveRack PX Powered Speaker Optimizer and a BBE 482i Sonic Maximizer. Is this a good match-up, and how many people would you say this set-up would be good for?
Need some advice about my amp. On the back are usual inputs and 2 outputs. Between the outputs is a socket called BRIDGE. What the hell does this do??? Also, techheads out there, why is my amp clipping leds coming on.. am i feeding too high level from mixer, or is the amp struggling to feed my speakers??? thx
The bridge output is basically letting all the power of the amp into one output. IE instead of halving the power for two spks, it channels all the available power to one output. As for clipping- it is being fed too high a signal. Keep your gains, and master below 0db- IE if you see red anywhere you are too loud!!!
I see a lot of DJs ask what WATTS to look for on speakers for a certain size of crowd. Watts can be decieving. To really tell what speakers are LOUDER look at the sensitivity rating. It'll be something like 98 dB SPL 1 watt / 1 meter. This tells you how much SPL the speaker will out put at one watt. So compare that rating with another speaker. You could have a 800 watt speaker and a 1400 watt speaker and the 800 watt could be louder...
I kinda understand but Jhon can you give us an example of what a Dj PA should look like I work I get parties always for a couple pf hundred people but I always have to rely on a privet company and a technician to get me the PA system and light cuz I dont have my own and dont know much about it to be honest and I'm planning to buy my own so please give me an example of lets say 3 kinds of PA systems one for small parties one for medium and one for big stuff please it will help
Thx for the info Jonathan, but looking at a function for about a hundred ppl, what sort of wattage on the speakers would you recommend? would 2 100watt speakers do the trick or more? Is there any sort of rule ie watts per person? LOL? thx again for all your vids they help loads...
No man 2 100W speakers wouldnt do for 100 people, even if you had them elevated high and with bass drivers...youd have to have a crapload of them if you wanted it to be good enough, so get higher wattage and less of them which would probably suit you better, depends on how big the place is also though, which is a big determining factor in how many you should get as well.
the wattage rating of a speaker also indicates it's thermal capacity. as current passes through the speaker coil, heat is generate like an electric heater. Two speakers rated at 300W don't produce the same sound level run from the same amp. sensitivity (dB@1meter) and the quality of the components used will determine the SPL (sound pressure level) and how "loud" it plays. to hear a noticable increase, the power must be doubled (3dB). to hear a BIG change, 10 tmes the power is needed.
spl is the percieved loudness. , , and if you double the output..eg add an extra 300w speaker in this case it will only add 3db... doubling the power increases it by more then 3db..dependant on the original W of course.
pretty sure thats what u meant.. just a little more explained
Why is it that my amp clips before the mixer? when the clip light shows on amp, i notice i am only on the 2nd or 3rd set of led's on the signal strength on the mixer for both channels? i still have like 9 steps to go one the mixer signal lights.
Because when your signel goes into the amplifier, the amplifer pushes the sound level up, and the amplifer has a limit on how much Db's goes in, i know mine is +24db, but i still clip the amplifier first, because the speakers are 1, getting too much power, or 2nd, the power going to the speakers is becoming DC voltage, not AC which should be sent.
actually clipping the signal to your amp is because the voltage of the signal from the previous device (mixer, x-over, or processor) to the amp is too much and so the pre amp of the amplifier is overloaded. Most amps today have clipping protection in them so that DC power does not go to your speakers but instead it automatically reduces gain on the input to limit the distortion.
I found from my Car Audio days that the best ratio I found was running speakers at 80% of what the Amp would do. For example. If my Amp was rated at 1000W, I would have speakers with a rateing of 800W That gives your Amp about 20% extra headroom. Amps don't run over the top, and the speakers get their happy power.
one question: I have thought about getting two Bergr. B212XL speakers, however I am not sure as to the best amp to power them, As I will be using them with a powered 15", Could they be ran briged mono, an thus be one ch. Or Left/Right, do u follow? For large groups of 80 or so folks, I would rather have these as they are long throw, Im thinking the bass would reach out better from poles placed ether side of the frnt/ leaving the pwr'd 15 to cover low's in the middle of the floor. Any ideas ?
Owkey, so you are talking 'bout a 4 ohm amp and 8 ohm speakers ... BUT
I got a 6 Ohm amp (from a simple hifi installation) and I want to buy a subwoofer with 4 Ohm's. There is a passive crossover inside like you told and I want to connect it with my tops from 8 Ohms.
Will it work or .. What will blow up first ? :D
Great Vids btw.. I'm checking for new ones every day.
(sorry for the bad englisch --> I'm from belgium :) )
match the RMS/continous power rating of a speaker to a amplifier output at a given impedance.
Ideally, match the Program power rating (2x RMS) of a speaker to the amplifier output at a given impedance.
When 2x 8ohm speakers (4ohm total) are connected to an amp channel which outputs 500W @ 4ohms, each speaker will get 250W. if the speaker power ratings are mixed, ie, 250W and 300W, each speaker will still receive 250W, ie, power is halved.
Thanks so much, best description of oms , wattage that I have came across yet!! I understand now!! Thanks

Note: i will be hooking up the harbingers to the DDM4000 Mixer via XLR.

why not just use some PA systems/speakers in your room (or bedroom dj room)
you could just turn the volume down if its took loud, but you could turn it up and use it for gigs too. Seems like a good choice am I right?
why get studio speakers when you could get PA speakers just as loud with the same quality?

because they arent really the same quality but i see what you mean

what is the difference between an amp and a speaker ? please reply x
inspiredbyshikari 2 years ago
from my understanding, it's not mainly being unver powered that kill a speaker, it the amp being over driven into clipping and the clipping is destroying the speaker. if i missed something let me know.

I'm gettin me soon a couple of Intimidation 15's and a Sinbin 1200 basscab. Should be a solid setup for medium sized gigs.
69e5d9e4 2 years ago
why would two speakers at 8 ohms together then give you 4 ohms? did you make a mistake there or is that true
matthewcrissall 2 years ago
this is true. look at ohms as valve on a water hose the more ohms the more closed it is. so all your speakers (valves) are 8 ohms you will have so much water flowing with one add another and you have two openings for twice the flow half the ohms. i hope this helps try google for some diagrams.

Great vid I need help though
I need a speaker system preferably powered and I can't spend a penny over 400 dollars on the set. what can I get this is for dj'ing in medium rooms for about 200 people
akakilla1 2 years ago

Thanks Mark

Depending on where you are going to use them for. Maybe 1 bass cab with a 500 to 800 watt rms is enough?
Pezjo16 2 years ago
I don't whether hiring equipment is a big thing in the UK but in my area in Germany it seems to be quite a usual method of getting top quality sound at a very reasonable price.
For example; 2x 18" bass (1kw) with 2x 500w Top speakers will set you back around €100 (£85) to hire for a day. They are 'active' speakers too and are quality products such as JBL or KS which would set you back around £5,000.

see the active crossover does that mean if i buy that i can get another two speakers and another amp like i have and use my mixer to channel it all through
krissypaxton1 2 years ago
basicaly you can go from mixer to active X over and from this to amps and then to speakers. j
ellaskins 2 years ago
No what he said was you can hook up 4x 8ohm speakers at 500 watts rms to one amplifier that is 2x1200watts @ 4ohms Never run an amp at 2 ohms even if they say its a 2ohm amp they dont like to work too hard
also you can run a active crossover on one amp but it would be running in mono put your bass bins one one channel and tops on the other and i would not use powered mixers or speakers as you cant run active crossover (you get more control over the sound )
kayakingdj 2 years ago
Still confused with ohms !!!!
Do you mean, i can hook up 4 speakers of 8hms 1000 watts each to 1 amplifier
2x1200 watts @ 2ohms ?

Excellent Advice as usual. Thx J
Need some advice about my amp. On the back are usual inputs and 2 outputs. Between the outputs is a socket called BRIDGE. What the hell does this do??? Also, techheads out there, why is my amp clipping leds coming on.. am i feeding too high level from mixer, or is the amp struggling to feed my speakers??? thx
djmarkalmond 3 years ago
The bridge output is basically letting all the power of the amp into one output. IE instead of halving the power for two spks, it channels all the available power to one output. As for clipping- it is being fed too high a signal. Keep your gains, and master below 0db- IE if you see red anywhere you are too loud!!!

let's say you have 500W speaker at 8 ohms, if you want to know what power you will get at 4 ohms, here is the answer:
500x4/8 = 250 W
at 4 ohms you will have 250 watts
DjMinda 3 years ago
I see a lot of DJs ask what WATTS to look for on speakers for a certain size of crowd. Watts can be decieving. To really tell what speakers are LOUDER look at the sensitivity rating. It'll be something like 98 dB SPL 1 watt / 1 meter. This tells you how much SPL the speaker will out put at one watt. So compare that rating with another speaker. You could have a 800 watt speaker and a 1400 watt speaker and the 800 watt could be louder...

I kinda understand but Jhon can you give us an example of what a Dj PA should look like I work I get parties always for a couple pf hundred people but I always have to rely on a privet company and a technician to get me the PA system and light cuz I dont have my own and dont know much about it to be honest and I'm planning to buy my own so please give me an example of lets say 3 kinds of PA systems one for small parties one for medium and one for big stuff please it will help
djnineeleven 3 years ago
I think a good rule is you can turn big pa down, but you can't turn small pa up!!
Nothing worse than not having enough power.
We always take at least a pair of double 15", we can then add double 18" subs if we need more.
A good sounding set up us 15" tops & 18" subs this a is good all round system.

Thx for the info Jonathan, but looking at a function for about a hundred ppl, what sort of wattage on the speakers would you recommend? would 2 100watt speakers do the trick or more? Is there any sort of rule ie watts per person? LOL? thx again for all your vids they help loads...
tinytuco 3 years ago
No man 2 100W speakers wouldnt do for 100 people, even if you had them elevated high and with bass drivers...youd have to have a crapload of them if you wanted it to be good enough, so get higher wattage and less of them which would probably suit you better, depends on how big the place is also though, which is a big determining factor in how many you should get as well.
DudasMiska 3 years ago
the wattage rating of a speaker also indicates it's thermal capacity. as current passes through the speaker coil, heat is generate like an electric heater. Two speakers rated at 300W don't produce the same sound level run from the same amp. sensitivity (dB@1meter) and the quality of the components used will determine the SPL (sound pressure level) and how "loud" it plays. to hear a noticable increase, the power must be doubled (3dB). to hear a BIG change, 10 tmes the power is needed.
humaxf1 3 years ago
spl is the percieved loudness. , , and if you double the output..eg add an extra 300w speaker in this case it will only add 3db... doubling the power increases it by more then 3db..dependant on the original W of course.
pretty sure thats what u meant.. just a little more explained

Why is it that my amp clips before the mixer? when the clip light shows on amp, i notice i am only on the 2nd or 3rd set of led's on the signal strength on the mixer for both channels? i still have like 9 steps to go one the mixer signal lights.
yellowgroove 3 years ago
Because when your signel goes into the amplifier, the amplifer pushes the sound level up, and the amplifer has a limit on how much Db's goes in, i know mine is +24db, but i still clip the amplifier first, because the speakers are 1, getting too much power, or 2nd, the power going to the speakers is becoming DC voltage, not AC which should be sent.
jamesduty92 3 years ago
actually clipping the signal to your amp is because the voltage of the signal from the previous device (mixer, x-over, or processor) to the amp is too much and so the pre amp of the amplifier is overloaded.

Works for me but also depends how spacious an area you are playing at. Something small, the sound can bounce around.

there are some websites of amplifier companies, that will help you choose which amp to couple with your passive speakers.

one question: I have thought about getting two Bergr.

It is important to remember to, at least:
match the RMS/continous power rating of a speaker to a amplifier output at a given impedance.
