i have to admit, I winced whenever he struck the volunteer. Some of the strikes he was hitting that guy with looked as if it would hurt like hell even with the padding that guy was wearing.
it hurts like a mother to get struck. Tai chi is the art of moving your chi (energy) from your core to your limbs (or wherever it may be needed). When they put all that energy and balance into a slow or even close up strike. . . . ouch. Bruce Lee's one inch punch is a good example. It's extremely controlled, yet powerful movements.
has any one of these movie producers or directors considered master wong to choreograph the action ( martial arts) in their movies im preaty sure it would be a nice action flick
I just started watching your videos about a week ago and love them. You are an amazing martial artist, Master Wong. I will be ordering some dvd's soon. Very inspiring and your teaching methods are very detailed and easy to understand.
@Wariar11 Physical strength plays an innate and important role in all physical work. That includes the martial arts and also styles like Tai chi. However, this does not mean big muscles only, but applicable strength combined with muscle memory. In order to learn more w/o having to go to Asia, look at academic work on sports, biology, physiotherapy, bionics or similar topics.
@TheMartialartsJedi part 3:It's a matter of opinion but I'm in the EWTO and know many martial artists who did karate, kick-boxing, judo, aikido, BJJ you name it but they all found their way with WT. You don't see much of it in mma but that's due to the rules, WT is not a sport, it's a self-defence system that has many ugly tecniques that can aid in a life/death situation. This is an old vid on WT with Victor in Spain, looking a little brutal, search: "WT Demo...Victor Gutierrez "
@TheMartialartsJedi Part 2:It's what Bruce Lee learned from Wong Shun Leung and Yip Man (he later invented JKD but nevertheless). I would suggest you stayed with WT until you get your tecnitians degree, then you can focus on doing perhaps more "fun" things, which help you relax or let go of your stress better. but in my opinion these are too many circular movements which have longer trajectories and therefore require more time to impact => slower (although most likely more powerfull mind you).
Part 1 : In my opinion WT (Wing Tsun, Wing Chun or Ving Chun depending by who and where you are taught) is the more effective combat system. It's the more intelligent fighting system, economy of movement, speed ("speed in combat is to hit an enemy without being hit", Bruce Lee I believe) and that's why I do martial arts, I don't know about you but I do it to hit and not get hit because depending on your opponent you may or may not be able to afford to take a hit.

I actually Learned the yang form from watching master wong on youtube after reading that tai chi is a good way to achieve longevity but, i also have been doing kung fu for over 20 yrs and ive been learning jeet kune do for the last 7 and if u look at his partner in the video you will notice that when master wong counters his partner stops and waits. anyone who's ever learned Bruce Lee's Philosophy on fighting knows that a real fight is never so choreographed. Master Wong is the best on the Net
@Gza36Chambers They have reasons to "take the fall." Enter an Aikido dojo and you'll see people flipping and twirling, because if they don't, their arms would be violently twisted apart. And if that happened, who would have partners to train with?
@JoseMunozRojas I agree to some extent, I guess you have not heard of form and muscle memory though. When you practice a move for the first time, do you do it really fast? or do you move slower to make sure technique is good and you understand the move? In a true martial setting where combat is happening, I doubt the form stays true but the movement and muscle memory are there. There in lies the application and the practice of martial arts.
It means like tai chi chuan, but this is a strange wavering form. And this too low straddle is good to get a kick to balls. This is a good hip-hop dance, with comic scary face. Congratulations!
Luckily, the demonstrator has wore a body suit, otherwise the rib cage will be broken. Taiji uses more push and sweep than punches to defect one's aggressor.
I'd like to see you say that to master wongs face.....there is 2 ways it would go down, 1: you'd get your ass kicked 12 different ways in 4 seconds or 2: you wouldn't say it and pussy out
Many people think Tai Chi is not useful, because the only know Yang style. The first of the five main styles is Chen. Chen style was created for combat by a retired general, he organized a police corp in his familiy's valley against armed bandits.
Ultimaty, when you view it from the highest dimension, there is no time and no space, there is no future and no past, it all is occuring in one fascinating moment of expression, but time is an illusion that has purpose.
wing chung and jkd are great arts and eazer to master the tai chi but not more practial in the long run because wing chung and jkd are based a lot on close in fighting and traping skills every style is different but every fight is different too in a real fight you can trap every punch and some fights you can trap at all. real tai chi harder to learn and takes more time but it all so teaches a wider ranger of skills then wing chung or jkd. and is well worth the extra time and work.
After seeing this video it has become my very big interest to learn tai chi and wing chun to help me keep in health and shape, and also protect myself against attackers in the cruel world!
Thank you Master Wong, please never stop making these videos.
I want to learn Tai Chi but if it takes as long as everybody says to get good enough for self defense I'll probably just learn wing chun. Is Tai Chi really that hard to use ?
You are right learning Tai Chi takes time. But that goes for all real Martial Arts. The thing is you are not going to wake up one day and say "Hey I can get into a fight and win using Tai chi. This is awesome." It will just happen. Your muscles will remember everything and you can use it. Someone may touch you and without thinking you will do some kind of move to protect yourself. Then you will realize that you are finally getting it.

Uh yes. Not the point. The origins of Tai Chi are somewhat sketchy and ARE contested. Some say training, some fitness, some meditation, and others defense. Our society (I speak of U.S. because that's what I know,) is big on drama fighting. The methods that take countless hours to perfect when basic street fighting strategies out perform them. Tai Chi taught in this way encompasses EVERY aspect: relaxation, fitness, defense, meditation, rehabilitation, and more. No need to be a smartass.
I think Tai Chi can be used in lots of different ways, and people can take out what they want of it, one of the - relaxation, fitness, defense, meditation, rehabilitation, and more - for their own needs :)
I wonder his technique will work all the time in real fights. His skill is useful for self defence and practicing it is good for health. Those professional fighters, they will fight anybody. They are the true fighters, for money of course.
Robertneo - He also practices Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do, so I suspect he would be just fine. Maybe not using only Tai Chi, but no true master of multiple arts would restrict themselves to only one. Certainly not JKD anyway.

Obviously, if the person only wishes to learn Tai Chi for the health benefits (cardio, flexibility), then it's a wonderful means to do so. As a martial art though, to take it to this level, it is too long-term to get anything out of within a normal person's patience.
