If you're going to use the standard 2 note power chord voicing, and you're playing metal, it's better to use your index and pinky finger for it. It enables you to slide it around quicker and more fluidly, which is essential in power chord riffs.

Just look at any Metallica or Slayer video and you'll see them doing it. It's not for everyone, but it certainly helps if you need the speed.
