Hey, cant we just all get along??? ON-J, Helen, Karen, Linda R, Carly Simon, Streisand, Diana??? Who can pinpoint the most talented of the bunch?? We were lucky to have them all and live in the time when they ruled the charts. While there may have been breaks in talent, we've got amazing talent again like Beyonce, Rhianna, Gaga, Pink... that our kids will be fighting about like we are in years to come. Let's just consider ourselves lucky that we cn enjoy it all!
Helen Reddy was SO much more talented that Olivia as a singer, they hardly even belong on the stage together. In fact, I consider HR to be one of the greatest female singers of the latter half of the 20th century. I put her right up there with Karen Carpenter.
ONJ was really quite limited in her singing ability, but her Barbie-doll good looks and passable voice, plus good material to work with and charming personality, took her a long way. She is a lot like Faith Hill in that respect.
@trwent Is it "American Idol" ? Do we need any competition ? Could you like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan or you must pick too ? Is there any other cliche you would like to share with us ?
@trwent Keep on guessing, trwent. Your comment about me as a relative of Miss Newton-John is as frivolous and silly as your obvious observation about Olivia Newton-John's looks. She is blonde, then she is dumb. That is not a metaphor, It's plain stupidity. Your so call is an overused common expression, a poor stereotype as false as meanningless. I know it would be hard work, but could you try to think something interesting to say before you write a comment ?
@pbamse Your so call is an overused common expression, a poor stereotype as false as meanningless.
My so call? What is a so call ?
Dumb? I made NO comment at all about ONJ's intelligence, I just made the observation that her looks and persona took her a long way, partially making up for the fact that she did NOT have an outstanding singing voice. I really do not know how that can be in dispute--NO ONE can plausibly maintain that she had a great voice. Pretty good? Sure. But NOT great.
@trwent You're really a conventional person, narrow minded for any dialogue. We are talking about pop music , you know ? They are not Callas or Pavarotti. But they are amazing perform and record sellers. Is that so important to value in your toy termometer if Reddy is over Newton-John ? Fortunatelly both had thousand of fans that care less the dull competition than enjoying their music for decades. Don't you have anything else to do in your life than starting boring topics on You Tube ?
@pbamse I challenge anyone reading the comment that I am replying to here to make out what that comment is trying to convey. The English is along the lines of Jethro Bodine--"I done graduated the 6th grade!!"
@trwent Don't want to start an argument, but think you should check out some of Olivias live performances on you tube, eg singing Hopelessly live in 78 or 79 when shes in pink or at the Oscars around the same time or any of her Sydney Opera House stuff from around 2006, she really CAN sing and do it live. In a way i think her stunning good looks have at times distracted from her singing ability, and some take her less seriously. On her looks i think shes one of the most beautiful woman EVER.
So fun to see this again! I remember it not being Dinah Shore, but The Tonight Show. Helen was the guest host, and had Olivia as her first guest. I remember reading that Helen was something of a mentor to Olivia when she first started hitting it big, and that they've remained friends. Two great ladies at the top of their game here.
Thanks for posting. You can see how much Helen and Olivia liked each other and looked out for each other even though they were competitors on the charts.
I have been waiting for years to see this video again. How did you find this rare gem? Everyone I knew couldn't find this! If I could give it 10 stars I would. What great talents these girls are!
...wishing i could see helen reddy's facial expressions better...must have been filmed with an antikythera mechanism.

Regardless that they are both heartbreakers....their voices and knack for melody are beyond that. Bacharach must have loved this one.

@pbamse I do not see any cliches in my comment. If you are referring to "Barbie-Doll good looks", that is a metaphor, NOT a cliche.
My guess is you are a relative of Olivia.
