  • Very interesting! I met with a creationist today and he spoke about this. How is the research coming along?

  • The ropen of Umboi Island may not be the same species as the glowing creature that is reported on nearby New Britain Island. But the MonsterQuest episode (it aired in early June, 2009) had major problems and may have led many viewers to a false conclusion: Giant glowing creatures are not bats.

  • HistoryChannel-com [MonsterQuest] : Flying Monsters - Airs on Sunday June 14 03:00 PM (EST).

  • Albeit, I'm a bit skeptical of identification being PTERODACTYL... I still long for you to find it. Therefore, allow me to give you some forensic input for your quest:

If the creature's skin is bioluminescent that could mean that is being exposed to LUCIFREN. It reacts with luciferase, salt and oxygen resulting in a burst of light and water. It could be getting this from eating phytoplanktons and zooplanktons. It could be skin rubbing on lichens found on decaying logs & caves too.

    Helpful?

  • The Western layman's word is "pterodactyl." (technically: "pterosaur.")

One reason we believe this large bioluminescent creature is a pterosaur is because of the testimonies of Jonah Jim and Jonathan Ragu (search those names with "ropen"). They saw, at different times and at different places on Umboi Island, very large pterosaur-like creatures that were glowing while they were flying.

  • @ropenseeker - As I stated before I find Jonah Jim and Jonathan Ragu verbal testimony to be very credible. No voice stress or outward signs of lying. I believe they really saw something. All you need to do is bring them some good illustrations of different animals including the pterosaur to see which ones they choose. They did this successfully in the Congo with the Bantu tribe with the sauropod denizens of Likoula Swamps.

I still like lucifren speculation for the bio-luminescence appearance.

  • Excuse me, but I have a question... Why would a fish eating "animal" glow in the night? It doesn't make sense... If it was a hunter, then you could say that it somehow uses the light to attrack it's prey, but it eats fish! and if it is a mating ritual of some sort... that would mean that there are more of these Ropens. And if that is the case, then why are there so few sightings ???

  • Reply #1 (to Valherulll):

Why should it not make sense for a fish-eating animal to glow? Many squids and similar sea creatures glow and eat fish.

At least some of the fish in the reefs surrounding Umboi Island are attracted to light. That seems one good reason for a ropen to glow.

  • Reply #2 (to Valherulll):

Of course there are a number of ropens; how else could they reproduce.

Why do you think that there are "few sightings?" Perhaps a better question would be, "Why have Americans (or Europeans or other Westerners) heard so little about the ropen?" My experience interviewing eyewitnesses suggests that there are many sightings of pterosaur-like creatures. Few of these sightings, however, are reported in newspapers, for many reasons.

  • Yes, aieoua

In fact, Paul Nation is the one who helped me prepare to go to Papua New Guinea in 2004. He also wrote a letter to a local government leader on Umboi Island; when I arrived there, I was surprised that they were expecting me.

Regarding the video, there is not much to see in the late-2006 video of the two "indava lights." The video was analyzed by the physicist Cliff Paiva, however, and there is no commonplace explanation for the lights. Is that the video you mean?

  • Hi, aieoua

It seems that there are many different kinds of flying lights at night, in different areas.

    It depends on details.

The ropen lights do not move like the lights that people usually call UFO's, for ropen lights on Umboi Island, Papua New Guinea, only last for about six seconds. Also, they are usually at low elevation.

  • this is so awsome!!!i live in texas & now that i know about this i relize that i saw one of those at nite when i came home...it was flying and i kind of watched where it was going then it disapeared behind some clouds

  • Wouldn't, after all these years, the ropens be vastly different from Pterosaurs of olden days?

  • Do you mean "why should ropens be different from fossils of pterosaurs?"

About fossils in general, the vast majority of fossils are quite similar to living organisms. Why should pterosaurs be different?

  • Some reports emphasize the grave robbery of the ropen. This creature actually is reported to eat fish and/or clams from the reefs around Umboi Island. Grave robbery is uncommon now that human bodies are sealed in coffins, rather than wrapped in leaves. I witnesses a funeral procession on Umboi Island in 2004: The body was in a coffin.

  • i am with u also ropen seeker there are only spottings of ropen in this village and in some other villag it tells u in the vid (the real lost world) check it out well anyways if i get any footage ill set it up for u other seekers

  • All the best. Never give up.

  • I might be able to get permission to show some night footage of the ropen lights (it was videotaped by my fellow investigator Paul Nation of Texas); What I really want, however, is for somebody to get good video footage showing the shape and features of this incredible animal (even if I am not the one to videotape it).

  • I interviewed Michael in Opai Village (Umboi Island, Papua New Guinea) in 2004. He spoke in Tok Pisin (I know a little) mostly, with some Kovai (I know almost nothing of that language) and a little English. In nearby Gomlongon Village, in 1949, a ropen robbed a grave. Michael saw the glow of the ropen but not any shape of the creature (this is common). The next day, the grave was open and empty.

  • you obviously know your stuff. got any ropen vids ? thanx for this one. good stuff

  • Hope u find one ;) I'm tired of hearing storys...want to see a video...go for it...good luck...do it...if u'll do it the world will change :P (sory about my english)
