@fivethumbsfrank Ta' very much for the appreciation...the guitar picking on this..almost doesn't let you stop playing it...some distinct 'grooves' emerge as you pick..esp' with the 'beat loop' I used for this.
@johnmartyntribute Delayed reply- sorry- no i/net while on an extended vacation- ta v much old bean..great one to play in standard tuning I reckon. -Ian
@buniluvr whoops Julie..didnt see this before. Ta very much. To be honest- There's only this, BTWeather, and Walkin back down the river, I can play from BTW album. Im sortof reaching 'backwards & forwards' from the mid 70s. From say SuChild/InsideOut/SAir/OneWorld period, occasionally. I def think others play early John *really well*, I like to learn from them there especially. -Ian
@mvo5720 Hey Mike...thaz started talking like a young 'un...whats wi t'dude stuff.....yer gu and retire ,,,next thing youll be wearing them long baggy shorts n doing 'rap'.....Seriously...ta fer looking in and listening...good to know you like the sound..trying to develop that a bit...as well as prime goal of guitar playing obviously .-Ian
@markobenetti Heyup Mark...okay, now I need to borrow that term..'pickslaptwang'...you realise if we were a large corporation and you came uo with that name, we'd have it 'branded'...you would then be regarded as a top executive officer...well, at least here in the secure wing of the John Martyn Obesessive Compulsive Disorders Hospital..'sublime strumming'..I'm gonna be using that too..no fear...[Seriously..Cheers Mark..ta fer listening in..-Ian]
@1978BenF Ta' for the comment Ben. Having a bloody awful day here-playing guitar probably keeps me almost sane-almost. This is a nice one to play too-regular tuning-the picking is sort of 'right' for regular in this I think. Right hand-very natural to me now I must say, (lots of 'steering wheel practice' listening to him in t'car in 70s and 80s !)
@buniluvr Mine too I think, Julie, he was a bugger for getting inside peoples hearts I reckon, very special music he made....and glad you like my effort here too. Just a 'quickie' from me as I go back to hit the work. Luv n peace -Ian
@LiteGauge Hello there JOhn..good to hear from you too! Not been around these parts (in the 'aether' ) lately..just popped in cos got a bit nostalgic for uploading!!..plus worked out one or two more lately, in my 'night relaxation times'. After hearing the JM tribute album..John Smith playing this.-he does nice job too...I got the bug to play it. Good health to you always & keep pickin John...-Ian
@DamianNixon Thanks Damian. Not been utubing tho' mucho myself lately- procastination/boredom with worked forced me here again!!...Yes, using a backbeat to this does make it 'tight' sound I suppose...and I had to be much more aware of the timing in picking it too. -Ian
Solid job there Ian, that's pretty much all there for the 'live' stuff when ye get yersel' up to doin' it on stage. !!!..great guitar and sound too....hey, I watched re-run on the 'box' of the JM docu from 2004 ? ( just before and after he'd his leg off )...interesting stuff. They aired it here on Friday night,
@jamesfdonaldson Ta Jim...and I would've put on a short skirt like, .Tina Turner style...but....legs unshaved and all that...anyway seriously thanks for the advice before and all. Yes...that JM documentary I heard was on Telly back home again..luckily I have a recording here...interetsing bloke really-flawed (who isnt?) but brilliant musically- the bits with Ralph McTell I think are revealing. (Me-stage-live?-well, odd small gig, right setting, maybe, I just like playing mi guitar really! )-Ian
@ianmcgeachy Small gig , right setting/people....never say never.....don't regret it.
post leg-off in the docu...JM..that wee pub gig...he was shittin' himself, and that's how it is with all of us....he was soon into his 'stride' tho' wasn't he. ?...the docu was informative and he was a grat talent.
@jamesfdonaldson heyup Jim..just seen your re-reply-JM documentary,..shittin himself a bit...thats what I thought...and the number of gigs he did prior to this over the years!!. reminds me of when I was a young lad- boxing- they always used to say 'you're only as good as your last fight'. Similarities with performing then I presume eh? By the way..do you reckon the 'gravel' tones in his voice allows him to sortof 'sing softly' yet still 'cut through' ? Im interested in what you think there.-Ian
@ianmcgeachy Indeed it is Ian...same thing , and I've figured out that it's all self-induced , this pressure , and even more 'stoopid' is the better we get as musicians, the more fault we find in our own playing , LOL....and the cycle goes on....Gravel tones ?. likely natural in his voc...but...e.g. around 6-8 K ( upper mid ) try + 2 or 3 dB , see if it makes a diff....my natural voc. is way too soft and I have to tweak it.
Great version, Ian! Beautiful guitar and vocal! Almost a pop song here by JM, really great! And as Kevin said, warm sound! A favorite for me! Cheers, mate! -karl
@karlake2 Heyup there Karl..ta' glad u like...yes, the way I did it..witha very regular backbeat emphasises the groove he has in this song..so sortof like a pop song that way-beat emphasis. Talk again soon Karl..vi ses.
Very nicely done...and the vocals sounded "warm" .. I like the level of the vocals in the mix ...the guitar sounds biting and very precise ...overall a cracking listen
@electricragtime Cheers Kev...a quickie-just played around with picking this tune the other week...then got idea of using lopper as a bongo beat. Then I tried using compresssion on the vocal input too...I think brings up the lower vol in my vocal s so does emphasis a bit better rather than trying to get a vocal 'average best mix level. Sp ta for that..'learning all ze time' as Benny Hill used to say..-Ian
Hey Ian, your voice works great on this one very nice guitar playing too!
