It's a sad business all around, really. Jerry was a phenomenal musician, and was truly devoted to the music, but bad habits did him in. It should be recognized, though, that to the best of my knowledge no one who loves Jerry loves him because he did drugs. They love him for the music he made.

It was a near death experience that got him to pick up a guitar to begin with, and he faced lots of tragedies throughout his life: his father died in a terrible drowning accident at a real young age, a friend died in a car accident and he walked out virtually unscathed, not to mention all the keyboardists.
