The raw feeling & presence, top range on choruses, there are rare times when a vocalist so fully occupies a song as to not only make it come alive, but creates a place of transcendent, evanescent evocation that nonetheless occupies the mind & soul more than most any tangible place. Richard reached this rare level here.
Manuel had serious health problems - no doubt - he accomplished an enormous amount with his substantial talent ... in an immensely stressful life... every member of The Band was/is a major talent in their own right ... together they were so much more ... Manuel was as much a major contributor as the others ...
god! music at it's best, i was born in 65, should have have been earlier. at least ten years earlier, today's music cannot compare to the music of the past. great stuff!
God help me, this band, and especially Richard, are a gift to us all. THIS is the America I love, hope for, pity, rock in my heart. Thank you for posting this.
They're so absolutely fantastic! Richard has such a beautiful voice. He makes every line convey so much more than just the lyrics. Why couldn't they have included shots like this in The Last Waltz?
Damn, im glad someone said it, fuck Robbie, fucken epic talker, give someone else a chance to get a word in, and Richard Manuel is portayed as the slow little brother. I mean the guys can belt out a tune, and gets no acknowledgement .

I think the reason Marty gave Robbie the most screen time in The Last Waltz was the fact that he could speak in complete sentences and he drooled the least. Did you hear the other guys? Poor old Richard had seen more sunsets than he'd yet to see at this point and he comes of like Manson's cellmate who gives him the creeps. And Rick "I turned the cigarette machine over" Danko appears to have abandoned his post long ago. Levon's kind of a rube and Garth seems like he has social anxiety disorder.
Levon kept quiet, probably because he was holding back rage, It would've been cool if he beat the shit out of Robbie. Garth was forced to talk, he didn't want to.

The Last Waltz pisses me off. Richard is the crazy guy in the corner. Scorsese wants to bone Robbie.

I love this song. It reminds me of my late uncle. Him and my dad love this song, and so do I.
