The drum beat defiantly came from a beat machine. I use it in some of my work. They could actually be playing the keys/guitar, not sure i would have to be there live.
Cool sound, but the music is uninspired. Maybe it's listening to Coltrane and his ilk that makes most musicians sound one dimensional to me or maybe it's that besides early hip hop, "innovation" in pop music just means trying on a different shade of visceral than the last guy.
I'd be really interested to hear what they could do with the cool little fuzzy sound they got going on, if they stopped the dirge fest.

for those wandering what genre they are, i'd say yes to hip hop (cause of the bests they use are very hip hop) for the keyboards and stuff i'd say a mellow electro and maybe experimental? either way, they're sick
What type of organ is that? Keyboard (I think it's a Nord or Moog)? Does the keyboard come with organ preset engine...Achieved sound? Digital or Analog? Enlighten me...Not trying to copy but am curious as to how they achieve their sound.
I'm pretty sure its a Nord Lead (on the wikipedia page for this instrument it claims Ratatat as a user and in some of their other live videos you can clearly make it out). I guess it tries to sound like analog (and obviously does a great job at it) but its really digital.
you guys are ridiculous its def electronic music no JAZZ ?!?! They are from brooklyn and they grew up in the rave scene the just wanted to bend the sound a little bit.
no this is this generations music it has very little to do with jazz at all more like really good techno man dont start mixing up incorrect music genres
depends on ur generation i guess. im refering to the fact that most generations make their own contributions to history and art, and sometimes they serve a similiar purpose as previous advances.
ratatat pushes musical envelopes and makes you make your own opinion about it by not providing lyrics to restrict the meaning.

Sometimes they don't "Mess Up"
If it's not exactly like the albums it doesn't mean it's a mistake.
A lot of musicians play the songs different than the albums when they play it live!
takenbysilence 3 years ago 2
He messed up there, listen
htime9119 3 years ago
Actually, he played that "offkey" note twice in the song. I agree with Takenbysilence, its a variation on the song.
Squiggoth 3 years ago 4
twice, but different parts in the song. you are just show that he messed up twice.
htime9119 3 years ago
I doubt he played it wrong, just in a different key....

um isn't this more like electro/rock/indie/whaterver with hip hop/break beat influences
i mean techno is more mono rhythmic usually and harder sounding richie hawtin and the like
anyway i think it has a very vintage nostalgic feel to it much like most of our youth culture today
badrawing 3 years ago 2
ur right about what u thought it is more like
its not techno dude
Tecate388 3 years ago
Actually, when you put their CD into iTunes, the default type is Electronic/Indie or Electronic/Dance.
jiik007 3 years ago
but itunes has no clue what its talking about. i put in a bayside cd and it was trying to tell me they were electronic/hip hop

no this is this generations music it has very little to do with jazz at all more like really good techno man dont start mixing up incorrect music genres
goofybast4rd 3 years ago
actually this structurally has much more to do with jazz than with techno so eat your own face.
crazeddemon 3 years ago 4
exactly. u have to pretty small minded to think the way of making the music dictates what it is.
thats like me saying beethoven isn't classical because i played it on keyboard instead of a piano
