  • thank God Fischer survived

  • Collpases??? Dude at the least sound it out if you won't google it.

  • That's so crazy! Glad he's alive! Just think how his family was feeling at this point!!

  • Its called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, which is a problem with a contractile protein in the heart. It is the most common cause for sudden death in young athletes.

Its a problem with the heart when it contracts so much, that it doesn't fill properly. So the heart does not dilate and one part of the heart (left ventricle) is hypertrophic, meaning it is contracting stronger than normally.

The heart beat Babcock was saying leads to death is called Atrial Fibrillation. He is very lucky.

  • only way he survived (glad he did, obviously) is because he is in the NHL. They have some of the best doctors on hand, ready to act immediately. If this happens at your local rink, or any incident like the one on Zednik, you're dead.

  • @meds613 Also, there as an AED right near the bench. The NHL changed some rules after this to mandate AEDs in every arena and for team physicians to be very close to the bench.

That may be why Fischer survived, but Alexei Cherepanov did not.

  • a seizure is one of the most painfull things ever i felt like evry muscle in my body was going into overdrive, i came 3 inches from landing head first on my set of weights

  • wtf are you talking about?

  • I was thinking that

  • deffo and I second that Go Wings! :-D

  • Wow Fischier is very very lucky.

  • If this ocurred at home, he wouldnt be with us right now.

It was a very good thing it happend at the rink, where the medical staff was right there.

  • is a seizure life threatening?

  • uh yeah your heart stops prety life threatnening

  • It doesn't mean your heart stops every time. Medical attention is indeed needed though. When I was still a child my mom had a seizure at home and it's pretty scary but it was nothing serious.

  • Actually a seizure is when the flow of oxygen to your brain is interrupted, so it was only cardiac arrest.

  • No, a seizure is when there is uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain.

  • trixster is right.... but when flow to the brain is interupted it can trigger the uncontrolled electrical activity.

  • It wasn't a seizure, they originally thought it was. He actually went into cardiac arrest.

  • no a pulseless arrest

  • Yes. Depending on how severe the seizure is. For example a prolonged loss of consciousness could be potentially life threatening.

  • From dead to Stanley Cup Champion. GO WINGS!

  • wow ur balls havent dropped yet have they?

  • fuckin' freak

  • im glad he is ok and i was watching that and that scared me

  • GOD i was watching that game. sad, that hes not going to be back. miss him. The wings are such good guys.

  • i was there too, upper-bowl. surreal

  • De-fibs are awesome, we have them at our local golf courses on the back of each cart. also. Jones, that did kick ass, I got a nice feeling in my somtach when I saw them quickly skating the stretcher over. these guys have great commarodary for each other!

  • I remember seeing that live, and my heart sunk when they brought that lady across the ice (i thought it was to say goodbye) and skated the stretcher away from Jiri. I thought he was gone.

  • I totaly thought the exact same thing as it unfolded that way. Really scary.

  • Some stations in Ontario (Canada) have PSAs on with a clip of the game. They're pushing for auto-defibs in all hockey arenas.

  • watching this gives me a weird feeling in my chest

  • Agreed.

  • the sad thing is, its happened in european football so much, and they never have any de-fibs on site... hopefully someone over there realizes how essential they are

  • Yes, these machines are so important. Even an amateur can use them and they can save lives.

  • props to everyone who acted immediately. cleared the bench. got the stretcher. the doctors . everyone acted very quickly. if they didnt he might not have made it

  • yzerman and draper skating the strecher to the bench they kickass

  • that was sad i was at that game

  • V No, he has officially announced that he wont be playing in the NHL again.

  • get well bud

  • Jiri is not retired they said he should be back playing in about 1-2 months if he passes the stress tests like before.

  • Fischer wants to play again, but i doubt it will happen.

  • Sadly, that will not happen, however...or at least I don't see any doctor clearing him. He was very recently transferred to the Wings' front office.

  • jiri

  • we love you Jiri,

  • get well jiri

  • i maybe not a fan of the red wings but god bless man i hope u get well

  • Get well soon Jiri! Hope to see you back in the NHL soon good and healthy :D

  • He's retired. He isn't going to play again.

  • Never say never.

  • were gonna miss you Jiri

  • wings fans always will love yu JIRI!

  • Ditto

  • Get well soon, Fisch!
