Gawd if I'd have been sitting in that audience the sheer force of the vocals would have blown me backward! Black folk sing like nobody else in the world!!! DIVA!!!
Audiences in Europe were supposed to act "polite". They didn't learn how to let loose till Disco swept Europe in the late 70's. It wasn't just Spain... They enjoyed it though! Love LABELLE!!!
I hate all these comments about spanish audience...
You all seem to forget that there was a dictatorship in Spain until 1975. We suffered 36 years of dictatorship!!
During that period, people who was standed out they could even being murdered! Did you know this? Do you know how much fear and pain all that people could feel in that moment?
I'm not saying Labelle's a bad singer or that she deserved to be ignored (she's a music goddess). But the last thing they were worried about was to clap.
Sometimes, it can be nice to spread a little American culture to the rest of the world... like good music. But it is painful to watch that guy try to pick up some groove. Ouch! I'm sure they appreciated Labelle performing for them, but they sure as hell didn't act like it. At least they tried. Feel the groove, people.
That "IDIOT," as you put it, is none other than RAPHAEL from Spain, one of the greatest vocal voices in the whole freaking world, if not THE greatest. He was gracious enough to host Patti Labelle on his show, and he was just joining in on the fun. If you have no idea about the circumstances surrounding that performance, then, perhaps, you should refrain yourself from making statements that other fans of Raphael might find offensive.
This is toooo much. Labelle are freaks! Vocally they are the fiercest ever! The Spanish sure didn't know how to take them...as with most people hence the reason why they weren't so mainstream.... Patti really held it down and her vocal style on Are You Lonely is a beautiful take on how she normally used to sing it.... Go Girls....!

I can see why this was lost in the annals of time: what a bore BUT consider this: Spain was enduring the last year of the Franco;'s "blonde" dictatorship, isolationist, and had not experienced the "Movida." Labelle may has well have been aliens and no one, as you see here, would utter a word.
That clip is something! Labelle in their spacesuits. And in front of the sedate " Royal Family of Spain " or something. They put up with that goofy host well.
That guy is so adorable.

This was still the time of Franco, so the people were still traumatized and not ready to fiesta like they do now.
