This is old school racing at its best. My first car was a 65' GTO 389 tri-power back in 67'. I went to work for a Ford dealer in Poughkeepsie, NY. My first demo to drive was a 428 Couger XR7. We got a new red Boss 302 in and I took it out for a spin. Closest thing to a race car I ever driven on the street. But I remember a used car we got in, 66' Mustang 2+2 with the HP289 in it. With the maroon paint and black interior, it was one of the prettiest muscle cars we ever had.
They're all RHD because the circuits run clockwise so RHD puts your seat on the side nearest the apex of the corner. Has nothing to do with where the car was made.
i know this is a Mk. I GT40 but is it powered by the 4.7 (289ci) or the later 5.0 (302ci) ...what rpms are u turning on when ur running out of gear? 7,000?
Oh my god....epic footage. I go to the Le Mans Classic every time it is on (2 years) and these GT40s are just awesome, with incredible sound - and a fantastc looking car as well.
The driving here is first rate. It looks like Ray Bellm but I see the video author is from Belgium.
Fantastic driving my friend! You've definitely got skills! I've got to figure out a way to own a Roush powered replica of one of those things. Again great driving.
Most GT40s were made at Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough. The GT40 started off as a Lola GT that evolved to become the car that we love today with a small block Ford engine in them (althogh the mark II and mark IV cars ran bog block Fords). As such nearly all GT40s are right hand drive...in fact I am not aware of any original cars that were LHD
@classiccafe1 Most sports racing cars have always been RHD, (unless they have been developed from a LHD road car) because most European circuits are clockwise. See Ferraris from the 1950s as an example.
that speedo needle was straight down flat out a few times, so he was doing 225-230 on those long ass straights. badd ass car for 45 years old huh. makes the new ford gt's look like subaru sti's
wow thats some excellent driving...is this car using the original 4spd (T-44??). thought i read on the superformance website that the original 4spd had a max speed of 89mph in 1st gear.
You are absolutely right, we tried a long ratio in 2004 and it was too long. In 2006 I did only 2 laps so never found out that the ratio we used then and also in 2008 was too short. I kept running out of revs 6 times per lap, pulling to 7.000 rpm and then just lifting......
I actually had to take a really deep breath after watching this video. Mega epic!

The speedo is not accurate.
On the back straight I get up to about 280 kph.

@hhh1950 roughly that is 173.6 MPH for those who measure in the english system

No its using the 5-speed ZF gearbox as original. I don't know the intermediate speeds in the gears.
hhh1950 2 years ago
ZF-RBT? is that a close ratio 5-spd as used in replicas/continuations?
seniorcat03 2 years ago
No it's the ZF 5DS as used in the original cars. The car is an original so it uses the original gearbox; there are no replica partsused.
hhh1950 2 years ago
is this an original?
and how much would one of these be worth?
and whats the top speed?
0-60mph?
i love this car, and would love to see more vids like this in the future
covGuk 2 years ago
Hi, this is an original GT40,worth a lot of money......
The top speed would be around 190mph; the 0-60 I don't know, but it's VERY fast!!!
hhh1950 2 years ago
in the utube search, write gt40 1969 onboard lap.
the driver himself says they hit 240mph.
have you got a dirffent engine? some have a 5L v8 and some have 7L v8 i think,,
or is yours not the lemans version.
so in other words have you got a road version gt40 and tuned it to race spec?
nice car, love the noise.
covGuk 2 years ago
In 1969 the back straight did not have the current 2 chicanes so they could go much faster. We now run a shorter diff than in those days.
My car has the period type 4,7L but with more hp than in 1966; in 1969 they ran 5L and the 7L was used in the beginning 1964/5.
There is no difference between the road- and the racing car; same chassis/suspension/gearbox/engine, only the engine has a higher tune.
