I Love The Cars, but I must make a statement about this song.
This song would be excellent if only they had not decided to sing the backup vocals "I do refuse" in the style that they did. Sounds almost like the partridge family. Mutt Lange messed up on that part of the song,,,,,,
That's it cuz the whole song is excellent otherwise. The Cars Rock!
i agree with you slance1 that heartbeat city is the best rock song ever....and just what i needed is a very close second...and yes i think the cars are the best band ever...thanks for your many posts...i am hoping for 2013 as the year they make the rock and roll hall of fame ...the character and respect of this group to me is off the charts
@elprado1963 If having an opinion different than yours is being clueless, then, yep, I must be clueless. But that's not how I define the word. I've had many clues regarding the Cars' "songs" and those clues tell me that my original determination is correct. Good luck with your life, friend. You'll need it.
@themoshmenace Oh you can sing better...lolololololol...is this why u listened to The Cars and no one but yourself listens ( thank God ) to the garbage that escapes the hole in your head....bwhaahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahaha
Oh, to only go back in time to those days when times were better! I loved this band so much. My roommate in college was playing their album and I feel in love with the Cars on the spot. I've been a fan ever since. Playing their music helps me escape from today's problems.
I was a huge Cars fan and they were the 'only' band I EVER liked that had that 80's electronic keyboard and drum sound going on (which virtually every band was doing back then). I really always despised that sound. I tried to like it, but just couldn't and still can't. But it just goes to show how special that band was and that they had some kind of magic going on or something cause I LOVED that bands music and was really fanatical about them. Ben was THE man for me back then. Still love him!!
Hugely underplayed and underated tune. As were a few others from this impeccable album. Crisp & throaty bass, tight percussion, perfectly plucked and picked guitars, very neat keyboards and just the exact amount of synthesizer all come together to make this the best (imho) album ever to listen to while cruising around in your own car. The louder the better..
Ric has it all. Extremely good looks. Amazing talent and killer hair. I wish I could go back to the 80's and see him in concert. That goes for the entire band. Thank you for posting.
this song is rife with all the ironies that made the Cars great..Ric's lyrics with that offbeat voice..no one sounds like the Cars..the original band was incredible.
Great song! Always was my favorite off of "Heartbeat City". The albums "Shake it Up" and "Heartbeat City" took The Cars a bit too far into mainstream pop-rock, but even then they created some fine stuff. Their first three albums were their very best.
Well we all have our own likes and dislikes, to be honest, my favorite album is "Heartbeat City", definitely :) But thanks for the comment, it's nice to see other fans expressing their feelings toward same music :) It just proves that everyone is unique ;)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This song stinks, the whole album was muck. And I consider myself a huge cars/rico fan. Anyone who thinks this song comes close to heartbeat city, tonight she comes, drive etc, is having a laugh
The Cars were one of my all time favorites but they sold out with this album. Frankly it sucked! However, this song was great! It was the only good song on the album in my opinion. Thanks for posting it so I don't have to dig out the album to listen to one song.
fuhrmaj62 are you talking about their album titled Heartbeat City? I actually loved that LP, the songs like "Drive" and "Why cant I have you" were very good. I guess you are entitled to your opinion, I mean there are albums I've hated even though 90% other people thought were good. I think Heartbeat City was a great album.
this whole album was awesome..when played at MAXIMUM on your car stereo..excellent bass..crisp percussion..powercharged drumwork..one of top 10 albums of the 80's.."Oh baby I refuse..I do refuse..oh you can pick but choose..I do refuse..find somebody else to use..I do refuse..cuz I refuse to come along"..
Four words describes this tune..."The louder...the better."

bands today just cant sound to this degree of "good"...the mentality and artist vision has been tarnished with the times.

Cars recorded only one song, "Drive". The remainder of their work appears to be sung out of tune and cannot be called songs.

@themoshmenace You are obviously clueless so we can dismiss your comment as just that... The CARS had many, many songs that were great...
