Hey everybody - I just released my solo album "Mirror Image" that contains ambient songs (and upbeat songs) heavily inspired by Stephen King's novel and movies The Shining, as well as Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. If you're interested you can check out the songs on my youtube page, and links to my myspace page and places to download the full album are on my youtube channel as well :) .
Im sorry, but this woman must have been a nightmare to work with. I feel like after watching all these behind the scenes things that she wants all the benefits of being an actor, but doesnt want to put in the work. Yeah the director is mean to her, but thats hollywood and hes not there to babysit someone sick or someone sad about an ex boyfriend. A billion other actresses were probably willing to taker her place.
Can't believe how many people think that Duvall was doing coke when Kubrick was telling her 'it's not good for you'. First of all, he was clearly referring to "sympathy" not being good for her, not coke. Secondly, actors don't just sit around blowing coke on the set of a high budget film like this (even during the late 70s) and finally, the tissues were to clear away fake tears and moisture applied to her face during the scenes where she's crying, not to clear away leftover cocaine. .
@SuperFakeandGay In case you didn't watch the whole thing,Shelley was purposely being mistreated by Kubrick to make her performance more believable.Kubrick was a different director to Shelley,he was mean to her.On top of that,Shelley just got out of a relationship, and she was very ill during this time. All of that stress and pain is what you see in the movie, that's why her expressions look so genuine.
It's so funny to see that they actually had a radio on the set. I mean these days you just put the music on afterwards.
And those who say that Kubrick was "mean" to Shelley DuVall... He pushed his actors to the limits! He did that in pretty much every movie he ever made. And besides he has to be demanding because it's his JOB! I don't think Steven Spielberg (or anyone else) just let the actors run around doing exactly what they want either.
Shelley's hysterical sound of her voice and her constant crying turned me off of her characted. It was only the times when she wasn't, that I didn't mind her performance.
Stanley Kubrick made Shelley Duvall do 127 takes of the "baseball bat" scene before he had one he was happy with. They really didn't get along with each other by all accounts.
Wow at 2:37 Kubrick plays Stravinsky's Rite of Spring during the filming of the maze chase. My favourite director influenced by my favourite composer.
woaow, i just saw the whole docu and i must say in the line where kubrick speaks with the actress i really sympathise withthim cause in my movies "shortmovies" i had the same problems with the actress, i told here some lines really doesnt sound convinced and she just told me its because the line in the script was bad... :-p my ass.. lol :D
I think the movie is a master piece, the performance of everyone it's outstanding that i'm glad to see this interviews because Danny does talk in real life and Nicholson isn't insane XD, sorry but they really conviced with their roles XD.
Obviously i didn't read the book, and you know why?, because i hate reading stories, romance, novels, science fiction, etc, i only read science/knowledge books.
I don't care if the book's better, i loved the movie and is my favorite horror film wether you like it or not ;) :D \o/
I think Shelly Duvall is an incredible actress.Simply look at this role she played ,and now skip to a couple years later when She did Popeye. She is a very talented actress.Dramatic, and funny ya know.Looks wise She does'nt fit the Hollywood stereotype. She has real talent. She does'nt get roles because of large breasts or a great Body. She is TALENTED.We get cheated alot today from hollywood.
Can someone explain to me how the boom mike doesn't pick up the director's voice as he tells actors to move this way, move that way, stop, look scared, and so forth?
I started reading the book 2 days ago, the film (which I love) is a watered down version of the book.
The characters have more depth, the story is more tragic and for that reason far more emotionally effecting...I am a Jack nicholsen fan, but I must admit that I have enjoyed learning more about this character from what I have read in the book, compared to what I saw in the film.
I dont usually read books, but I would urge anyone who likes this film to get a copy its just far more intense.
Kurisu0, you can feel any way you wish about her, no need to get so defensive. Her "over the Top" performance always reminded me that I was watching an actor, instead of getting lost in the story. By the way, I think there's a reason you haven't seen anyone like her since, as she holds the world record for the most re-takes in a single film.
Me too! Unfortunately this is, unless some other as yet unknown films of him making movies show up, the only such documentary film that we'll ever have, since Kubrick died in 1999.
in part one Jack asks her if she is pulling out a bag of salt from her coat and she says yea. Here Kubric tells her it doesnt help when she _____.(1:08) In which she replies yes it does, as she from what it appears cleans out her nose. Umm anyone else catch this? is she "powdering her nose" on set!?
Shelley Duvall's a lot prettier here than in the movie. I didn't like the way she was portrayed in the movie at all. Her hair looked greasy half the time.
Mabey it indicates the stress of the proberlams that she faces in the film or the fact that she was going a litle insane as were all of them through out the movie.
I don't find Kubrick humorless and abrasive. As a skilled director (i.e. a human-handler with an artistic vision) he does very well. Probably Duvall was chosen exactly for the neurotic energy she exudes. Kubrick would know how to keep that on the boil for good takes.
Kubrick remains my favorite director and was unquestionably a genius, but he comes across as humorless and abrasive throughout the documentary. There are two sides to every story, though. Duvall could've been annoying from Day One, leading to Kubrick's understandable frustration with her, OR she might've started out fine, and Kubrick's demanding nature might've put her on edge and frayed her nerves.
Everyone seems to say Shelly is annoying but when you think about it, it really would be a very stressful role to play. Cause the movie itself is grueling (yet enjoyable) to watch; imagine being on the set for so long and having to keep that intensity going for so long. And so I think she just copes with the stress in her own way. And I don't think she loves attention as much as Jack Nicholson clearly does.
She says herself "I love attention" ...but I can't imagine with Kubrick. Nearly all the people who have acted in his films say how his constant hunger for takes was infuriating. If Shelly's health was bad it would have affected her more.
Love this documentary, one of my favourite movies. The part where Nicholson is going through lines and Kubrick is typing at the same table.. wow. Its like a figment of my imagination made flesh.
Stanley Kubrick was intentionally attempting to antagonize her in order to bring about the performance from her he desired. The greater frustration she experienced at hands of Kubrick the more this appeared within her acting performance within the film.
I never understand how the money trickles down like that, on the set it looks like a more intimate, smaller crew and the barest of expenses, the 16 hour days probably rose crew rates but I still don't see how it's so much...Unless you figured in Nicholson's rate.
I heard the budget was around 10 million. Still a lot of dough for a late seventies production. The crew was relatively smal, yes, but everything had to be built from scratch - the hotel was a set, costumes had to be made for a large number of extra's, Nicholson took home a cool million, Kubrick didn't exactly work for free either and the movie rights for King's book were pretty expensive as well.
i love how danny lloyd was a very real child actor who like henry thomas +drew barrymore in e.t. -knew how to be a kid - unlike most of today's child actors, dakota fanning, haley joe, malcolm in the migraine etc- today's kid actors are too self-consciously precocious. the kids in charlie and the chocolate factory were real, too - the kid in soul food, the kid in jerry macguire. but most child actors today suck. i guess being yourself is a talent actors must have in order to be good
i always liked that the shining has a small central cast -its got a kind of chamber drama feel like most of reservoir dogs- but most of the actors here play ghosts. i never thought of it that way.
"...hunks of a hair" *holds up ONE strand of hair that she gave him* Kubrick is such a smartass. haha
