In the north we have 8 foot long rat snakes, aggressive water snakes, and not to mention Timber Rattlesnakes and Northern Copperheads. While copperheads may be more common in your area, ours are more venomous. We have more knowledge of snakes in the north and were we were tought to
treat all animals with respect. In the south there are many poachers based on Animal Planet. Not to mention in the north it's evenly distributed throughout the year with cold. December to march are cold and snowy.
You may be more educated than many northerners, but based on several education records states in the north scored the highest while states in the south scored the lowest. Many people in the south are cruel Mother Nature. For example venomous snakes. Up here in the north if we see a Rattlesnake or Copperhead we don't burn it or kill it, and then put it on YouTube. Compared to the north the south is very low class. It is true that we have better education because education is high in every state in the Northeast. Does the south have that no. Arkansas and almost all of the southern states scored extremely low on education levels. This doesn't make them bad people though. But some of them are very cruel to Mother Nature. The only argument you have that even modestly works is "we're not all like that" but even that loses validity when the south consistantly has the lowest test scores year after year, highest teen pregnancy, lowest high school graduation rates (from dumb schools no less) and highest poverty rates in the US. @Slotten68 To a point yes, though its not so much a stereotype as a personal observation from having been in the north. The people from the north also tend to be the ones doing the stereotyping more often than not. Backwards is relative, lately the south is not as backward as other parts of the nation think we are. Statistics can be manipulated (and it depends on the point of view of who is gathering them). History can be changed as well, so thats not any excuse.

Compared to where I live, wisconsin has no blacks at all. the zip code I live in is 35 percent black and 20 percent hispanic, so in diversity we have the midwest beat. Are they harvard? No, but they are not abysmal. The HS graduation rate in my southern state is 91 percent. Poverty exists in the south, but keep in mind its also cheaper to live in the south as things cost less here. Pregnancy is nto a bad thing, teen pregnancy rates are like 4 percent, and dropping.
@CodArk2 91% What state do you live in? The average is a lot lower and you cant have an average without below average scores which the south dominates. Besides even if your overestimated statistic is right (which it isn't) it still doesn't hide the fact that you can get a degree from a HS in the south by simply showing up and learning how to read. My state, Wisconsin spends WAY more than any of the southern states do on edu and its not even close. Compare ANY big ten school to any SEC school.
@Slotten68 I looked, and apparently that was local area, the statewide average was 72 percent. Though i should point out that several northern states actually ranked lower. Also, you vastly underestimate how educated southerners are if you think we just have to read to pass high school, my states high school requirements are tough though, even nationally. Im west of the mississippi, and not close? wis. spends $ 2,580 per student in spending. Mine is $2,384 per studen. 200 dollar dif.
@CodArk2 I'm not entirely sure about where you found your statistics, but I'm not entirely suprised. Those sorts of statistics don't provide as much insight to public school achievement as we may think.
More importantly are graduation rates, standardized test scores, college enterance rates and quality of major universities. Those numbers are widely available and you could imagine who they support...
@Slotten68 the US dept of education has statistics on all that for each state. graduation rate for my state is 74 percent, for wisconsin it is 83 percent. in terms of standardized test scores, we are about midrange, not the highest, but not the lowest either. entrance rates for universities are not that bad either for those that go to college, and our universities are not bad, in some areas they are better than whats in the north
@Slotten68 You seem to be forgetting some things about college. First is that you can go to university ANYWHERE. As a southerner if i have the grades and the money, i can get into harvard or yale just as well as a northerner can. I went to the university of texas, for my purposes it was better than the UW or northern colleges (medicine at UT is one of the best in the country, and yes, better than UW). Assuming just because its in the north its better is stupid though.

UW Med school is way better. UW-Madison is ranked second for research funding behind only Johns Hopkins w/2010 numbers eclipsing $1 billion.
I'm assuming you were talking about U-Texas at Austin but they dont have a med school so did you mean at Dallas? Yeah their med school is ranked higher but UW destroys it in research (practical aaplications) and is SIGNIFICANTLY higher ranked in everything else. Its not even close

The largest hospital on earth is in houston, the most advanced cancer research is done at MD anderson. the university of texas medical branch in galveston is one of the largest hospitals and research facilities on earth, and lets not forget we also have NASA, which has its own medical research. The there is Baylor college of Medicine as well.

@Slotten68 UT's med rankings are still higher, and I had plenty of research opportunities. UT is not dramatically inferior to other schools, since i did compare and contrast. And I doubt they turn down someone with a 4.0 from a southern school, we aren't that backward. Maybe if they didnt have the money to pay for it, since souther schools are less expensive than northern ones too, but not based on education. something like 20 of the top 50 schools in the US are in the south

@oopssiddaisy As far as the federal government goes, it's stupid that we have a "liberal" president that doesn't support gay marriage. That's why I'm not a Republican or a Democrat. @Slotten68 I should point out that many of those are because the souths population is growing much faster than the norths. Many people are moving to the sun belt, while the rust belt is emptying out. Part of the reason we have seen an uptick in violence is because of the explosion in population, same with schools trying to teach far more than what they used to have to.

In the north we have 8 foot long rat snakes, aggressive water snakes, and not to mention Timber Rattlesnakes and Northern Copperheads. While copperheads may be more common in your area, ours are more venomous. We have more knowledge of snakes in the north and were we were tought to
treat all animals with respect. In the south there are many poachers based on Animal Planet. Not to mention in the north it's evenly distributed throughout the year with cold. December to march are cold and snowy.

You may be more educated than many northerners, but based on several education records states in the north scored the highest while states in the south scored the lowest. Many people in the south are cruel Mother Nature. For example venomous snakes. Up here in the north if we see a Rattlesnake or Copperhead we don't burn it or kill it, and then put it on YouTube. Compared to the north the south is very low class. It is true that we have better education because education is high in every state in the Northeast. Does the south have that no. Arkansas and almost all of the southern states scored extremely low on education levels. This doesn't make them bad people though. But some of them are very cruel to Mother Nature. Poverty is every where in the south.

Are they harvard? No, but they are not abysmal. The HS graduation rate in my southern state is 91 percent. Poverty exists in the south, but keep in mind its also cheaper to live in the south as things cost less here. Pregnancy is nto a bad thing, teen pregnancy rates are like 4 percent, and dropping.

Besides even if your overestimated statistic is right (which it isn't) it still doesn't hide the fact that you can get a degree from a HS in the south by simply showing up and learning how to read. My state, Wisconsin spends WAY more than any of the southern states do on edu and its not even close. Compare ANY big ten school to any SEC school.

Also, you vastly underestimate how educated southerners are if you think we just have to read to pass high school, my states high school requirements are tough though, even nationally. Im west of the mississippi, and not close? wis. spends $ 2,580 per student in spending. Mine is $2,384 per studen. 200 dollar dif.

More importantly are graduation rates, standardized test scores, college enterance rates and quality of major universities. Those numbers are widely available and you could imagine who they support...

@Slotten68 the US dept of education has statistics on all that for each state. graduation rate for my state is 74 percent, for wisconsin it is 83 percent. in terms of standardized test scores, we are about midrange, not the highest, but not the lowest either. entrance rates for universities are not that bad either for those that go to college, and our universities are not bad, in some areas they are better than whats in the north

UW Med school is way better. UW-Madison is ranked second for research funding behind only Johns Hopkins w/2010 numbers eclipsing $1 billion.

The largest hospital on earth is in houston, the most advanced cancer research is done at MD anderson. the university of texas medical branch in galveston is one of the largest hospitals and research facilities on earth, and lets not forget we also have NASA, which has its own medical research. And I doubt they turn down someone with a 4.0 from a southern school, we aren't that backward. That is a state-by-state issue, but the FEDERAL govt doesn't even recognize same sex marriage. So let's not cast stones in a glass house. @oopssiddaisy I do follow current events, and the reason that California voted against gay marriage is because Mormons from Utah went on a massive funding campaign against it. So, their religious fundamentalists are just as bad as yours. Besides, California is fucking shit anyway. There are atheists and homosexuals in The South, but they're not influential or out-spoken, either.

@oopssiddaisy As far as the federal government goes, it's stupid that we have a "liberal" president that doesn't support gay marriage. That's why I'm not a Republican or a Democrat. I'm farther to the left than either of those parties would ever want to be. It still goes to show that the majority of the states in The Northeast legalized gay marriage, because they have morals (also Kansas, I think, ironically). The South follows "Christian" laws, rather than national laws set up by the country.

@Slotten68 I should point out that many of those are because the souths population is growing much faster than the norths. Many people are moving to the sun belt, while the rust belt is emptying out. Part of the reason we have seen an uptick in violence is because of the explosion in population, same with schools trying to teach far more than what they used to have to.

Its not a common occurrence in the south or anywhere else. There are more hate groups in the western US than in the south. As for laws, the only law seen as "holding back" gay people are marriage ones, and most states including northern ones don't let gays marry. And I have been to michigan, I doubt you have been to the south.

@IKeepBadCompany also need to clarify something for you. the gay marriage issue is not a moral issue, but an issue dealing with entitlement to government benefits. the idea is that if gays can marry, the definition of marriage is compromised so that anyone can marry anyone (or anything) so benefits will naturally be dilluted as resources are more generically dispersed. the only real solution for equality is of course, to ban ALL marriage lol.

I'm a Northerner from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the people Up There are more clean, friendly, forward, fast, and proper english people. I now live in Atlanta, Georgia, which is in the South. and the people Down Here are really backwards thinking.

@daniakil1 I don't know about atlanta, but not all of us are like that. I'll be honest with ya, I don't like yankees period. They have ways that just make me cringe. And the ones that i've meet aren't very friendly at all.

@daniakil1 I certainly agree with you on that one. I moved south to Virginia and at first I thought it was just me but they really do everything backwards.
