*UPDATE - Please check out my interview with Ke Huy Quan who played DATA in the Goonies! Click my name to take you to the front page.
Don't forget - JUNE 4-7 2010 is the 25th anniversary of The Goonies and weekend-long celebrations are being organised! Click my profile facebook link for more info!
It was made at a time when America was feeling confident again (after the 'Nam hangover). It was anti-corporations and about family values. It was soaked with references to the era in which MTV actually played music, and the BMX was an all-new bike. Not only that, but it was one of the last of the great 'family' movies of an era that began with Star Wars (the Spielberg/Lucas - and protege's era)...
... American culture was strong at that time, because it still had the last remnants of 50's values running through everything, and what it was producing was top quality. The world was buying it too, so you'll find many people internationally who hold these movies to their hearts. In Britain, we had no film industry, so well all grew up (then) on American movies. Our big cultural export was music at the time. Goonie's was a great American movie, and you should be proud of it.
Thanks for your insights. The 80's were, as I realize decades later, a Golden Age and movies -- especially the Goonies -- made it that way.
I never knew the movie was received so well internationally. It certainly reflected the magic of the time and of my life.
The patriotic Americana feeling was probably due to, as you said, the 50's values, era references, family values etc. The movie just "glowed". Ironically, Spielberg's "Poltergeist" had some of this feeling too.
Can't believe I've only just seen this! Absolutely brilliant, such genuinely nice people - kudos to you for putting all this together my friend - really hope I can make the next one :D
I Love what u guys are doing ,this is my all time favorite movie ever. My dream is to visit the goonie house, u guys take me there so thats "good enough" keep up the good work!

For some reason, Goonies brings out patriotism in me. Anyone else think it is an "All American" movie?

A lot of fun...just wish Curtis could have had a chance to talk more... "You're looking at the richest people in Astoria...now SIGN IT."
Chunk was a patient at the clinic I worked in in BH years ago, but I didn't want to give him any shit, so I left him alone.
The perfect rainy day movie....
